Oscar Wilde Satire Analysis

The author of the poem, Oscar Wilde, uses satire ubiquitously. Wilde is repeatedly going against the snobby attitude, self importance, and ignorance of the Victorian Era. As learned in class, The Victorian Era focused on everything starting with being earnest and genuine to ending with thrift and having a sense of duty. Simply put, the Victorian erafamilies consisted of a higher end middle class and the upper class snobs.

The Victorian era was so attached to the idea of living an earnest life, in a serious intense mental state, that the people of the time had come to a realization that this time period had seemed buffoonish. People were scared of their own self image so they had to create another life as a ploy. They lead double lives and pretended to live in an earnest manner. The Victorian Era was a very arrogant time period in general. The struggle to achieve the satisfaction of living an earnest manner made the citizens crazy and almost compensate for doing anything. Ugliness, Selfishness, unnecessary pride, a false sense of self worth and dangerous arrogance ruined the foundation of many human beings. Mainly, the play focuses on an upper class family who strives to be of earnest living or at least try to through marital inheritance. Jack and another man, Algernon are two men who have a primary concern for being earnest, also for the benefits of the name alone. Jack Worthing, the main character who is also known as Mr. Ernest Worthing, is the epitome of hypocrisy. Jack Worthing lives a double life to pursue the love of an urban woman, Gwendolen, who had also followed the belief that the Victorian society permitted children to lead a separate life. Algernon had also followed in his Bunbury friend s ways. He took a false name of earnest as well. Instead of going to the city, he went to the completely other side and went into the village where he met the love of his life, Cecily. Algernon had secretly known that Cecily had liked the name of Earnest, owned by Jack s fictional brother, so he introduced himself as the fictitious brother of Jack. This is where we see our first altercation with hypocrisy. Both the men and women characters have fallen victim to the permitted thought of Victorian era

Themes Of Love And Hate

Love and hate are both an occurring theme in both Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare and Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. In this essay I will be comparing the similarities and differences of the way that the two texts portray the feeling of love and hate. The essay will be divided into different topics that I will be comparing, these following topics will be: death, passion, betrayal and one more. Romeo and Juliet was a play that was written by the famous English poet, playwright William Shakespearewhose work is recognised globally today. Romeo and Juliet was written in 1594 during the Elizabethan era in which the renaissance occurred which saw a cultural movement in thing such as politics, science, religion, etc. Frankenstein was a novel that was written by Mary Shelly. Frankenstein was published during 1818 a later period than Romeo and Juliet; this was an era of revolution in which the novel does portray revolutionary ideas such as the use of science by Frankenstein to create the supernatural creature. Furthermore, ideas of gothic themes are also presented within Frankenstein as the novel was created during a gothic era.

Death occurs in both Romeo and Juliet and Frankenstein but both present different emotions in terms of love and hate. In the prologue of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare introduces the audience to the feud of both families as from forth the fatal loins of these two foes . Shakespeare s use of the word fatal suggests that death is going to occur due to

Man is still the most extraordinary computer of all.

John F. Kennedy, May 21, 1963 (676)

In his poem All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace, published in 1968, Richard Brautigan places the reader in a future realm: a sparkling utopia where mammals and computers live together in mutually programming harmony (1). He draws us in by juxtaposing images of nature, man and machine that challenge us to imagine this new world. In essence, Brautigan s poem is a supplication for that dream world, but to the modern reader it can be a land of irony. Imagine a cybernetic ecology #8212;a place were silvery electronic wires run along a river, or where mountains are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Accordingly, All Watch Over By Machines of Loving Grace is a romantic supplication for a place where computers or machines of loving grace are symbolic for shepherds. Moreover, the time of which we live in mutually programming harmony. is symbolic of a Golden Age where humans and animals live watched over in peaceful accord with machines.

In addition, the poem contains a satirical, biblical allusion. Brautigan writes, where mammals and computers/ live together in mutally/ programming harmony. These lines draw a sharp comparison to the famous passage Isaiah 11.6, The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. This passage refers to peace on earth, the very subject of Brautigan s poem. The reader could conclude that the dangerous beasts made gentle are symbolic of the violent ways of man at its end. Also, the kid refers to the new technology of computers, who watch over us in loving grace.

Yet, there is an irony in analyzing this poem as pastoral. The modern reader can also view the poems theme as a dark satire. Brautigan s enthusiastic tone in lines such as, I like to think (and/ the sooner the better!), (right now please!), and (it has to be!), relate to a

Kit Fox Research Paper

Kit foxes, also called Vulpes Macrotis are among the smallest foxes in America. The kit fox is very easily mistaken for a dog however when you look at their appearance you realize that proportions are not that of a dog s. Many people often confuse the kit fox with its larger cousin, the grey desert fox. Kit foxes have exceptionally large and closely set ears. Their ears help spread the body heat in the desert like environments. Kit foxes typically have a slender and small body with long legs and a very puffy tail. Their tails stick straight out behind them, and it tipped in black. Kit foxes coats change with the seasons going from a rusty tan to grey in the summer, to a silvery grey color with a white belly in the winter. The kit fox s

Punishment In Dante s Inferno

In the tale of Dante s Inferno Dante prescribes thoughtful, logical, and fitting punishments to fit the sins of Hell s inhabitants. Although his story might not reflect truth about the layout of Hell, his writing provides an interesting prospective on how to view sin. Most Christians think of an action as sin or not, but Dante grades sins by severity, thus organizing Hellas he sees it. Each circle of Hell holds different sinners each enduring torture of different kinds. Throughout the Divine ComedyDante ingrains the idea of different punishments fitting to the sins committed through the different levels he describes. Upon his entry to Hell, Dante and the Virgil enter the first circle, Limbo. In Limbo reside those who lived virtuous lives,

Peer Review Essay Examples

Without having someone else to look over your work, it is hard to realize what you are doing wrong. When someone else reads your paper, especially having not read it before, they can easily identify your mistakes, whether it be punctuation or spelling errors. I strongly believe that when peer review is taken advantage of and used correctly, peer reviews are extremely helpful, but, unfortunately not everyone takes it serious and gives you the feedback that can really help you fix your essay. I had been rereading my WritingProject 1 essay over Philando Castile for other a week to make sure it was to perfection. It wasn t until my paper went through peer reviewthat I realized my mistakes. For example, one of my first sentences in my essay made absolutely no sense because it was missing one word, but when I had been reading it myself, I had never even noticed that it was missing the word. The sentence had said, Castile, with his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her four year old daughter in the car, was over for a broken brake light (Straley 1). I had been reading the sentence as if the word,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Once again, I had made mistakes I hadn t even noticed before. When my paper went through peer review, and I received feedback, I was told something I had thought I had already done. I was told, Commas need added in a few spots like after In fact, and Still, (Anonymous). Surely when I went back to the essay there were not commas in some important spots, for example, In fact about a third of students who take out student loans never even graduate and receive their diploma (Straley 3). Having a peer read your essay, can really help you find your grammatical errors. When we read our own paper, we often read it as if the punctuation is there, even if it is not. When someone else reads it though, they can easily identify these mistakes, especially when it is their first time reading your

Forecasting Model Of Forecasting Models

Forecasting is often defined as the estimation of the value of a variable (or set of variables) at some future point in time (Goodier, 2010). It can be applied to a number of different situations when there is uncertainty about the future and the data collected can aid in decisions that need to be made (Armstrong, 2001). In relation to healthcare, forecastingmodels have been used to aid their sector s departments to plan staff rota schedules, ensuring that a sufficient amount of senior staff are available at any given time throughout the day, week, month and year. As explained previously, a fundamental factor that causes overcrowding is a limited supply of resources to treat patients, leading to a longer time spent in an Emergency... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These models can be characterised as consisting of a time trend, a seasonal factor, a cyclical element and an error term (Kennedy, 2008.) Unlike casual or economic forecasting, where it is assumed there is a historical relationship between a dependent and an independent variable will be consistent in the future, time series models assume the historical components of the model will repeat itself. Research has been undertaken to develop a generalised forecasting model that uses a method that can accurately predict future the attendees and resources needed at Emergency Departments.

1.3.3 Long Range Forecasting for Future Attendees An early attempt to predict attendees was conducted by Milner (1988) who s study on a single Emergency Department within the UK attempted support to healthcare planning by forecasting annual first, return and total attendances at EDs for Trent districts and the whole of the Trent region. The data of annual first, return and total attendances were collected over a training period of 10 years and evaluated over a period of 1 year using an Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) method for modelling which falls into time series model category. This method for forecasting this type of data has been supported by other researchers, who state that ARIMA forecasting techniques should be considered for a time series that s contains a trend or seasonal or non stationary data. Childhood Development Of Anxiety And Depression

Retrieved November 16, 2015, from http://www.child encyclopedia.com/parenting skills/according experts/parent child relationships early childhood and development. The impact of the parent on the child s development is enormous mainly because they are close to the child more than anybody else and the fact that children look up to them. In her article, Hudson relates parenting and anxiety disorders by stating that overprotective parenting may lead to these disorders at a later stage of their development. It is true to state that parents have a big role to play concerning their children s emotional needs hence the state of the relationship between parents and children have a huge bearing on how the children will turn out in later stages of their lives. Hudson states that handling fearful and risky situations is among the principal factors of dealing with anxiety. However, overprotective parents bring out a situation where the children are shielded from fearful moments that would have helped to build their character. This situation strips them of the skills to deal with distressing situations when they are older.

According to Erickson s psychosocial theory, the first stage of growth requires that parents provide support for their kids through an accurate reading of their

Sexual Decency In The Ninetieth Century

Who you go to sleep next to is your sexual orientation and who you go to sleep as is your gender identity, which are both distinct today from your marital status; this however, was not always true, for much of history society conflated gender, sexuality and marriage. As society evolved the predominate ideas concerning a person s sexuality, their gender, and the social importance of marriage transformed. To illustrate the changes to the structure of marriage this paper will examine the changes of sexual decency in the late eighteenth century, the culture of respectability in the ninetieth century, post war America in the mid twentieth century, and the sexual revolution in the late twentieth century. For much of history gender and sexuality were deeply... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The changes in sexual decency, for men and women, in the late eighteenth century most accurately explain marriage during this time period. For elites during this time, marriage was the defining factor of what made sexuality acceptable, because sexuality for reproductive purposes was universally good (Kushner, 9/4/15). However, sex activity outside this framework was frowned upon and regulated heavily by society (Kushner, 9/4/15). For common people, marriage was less concerned with sexuality and more with daily economic and social survival (Kushner, 9/4/15). Towards the end of the century the demographic shift, which responded to the increase in birth rates, highlighted that sexuality gained social acceptance outside of marriage (Kushner, 9/4/15). Society at larger no longer viewed sex and sexuality as immoral and therefore people began to

Examples Of Isolation In The Great Gatsby

In the Metamorphosis and the Great Gatsby, Gregor Samsa and Jay Gatsby isolate themselves from others showing immense forms of social isolation. In the Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor Samsa has recently underwent an enormous transformation that has spark his need for isolation. One example that shows Gregors isolation is when he thinks, Well, leaving out the fact that the doors were locked, should he really call for help? In spite of all his miseries, he could not repress a smile at this thought (Kafka 948 49). Gregor has yet to present himself to anyone, but he feels ever more isolated that before. He is thinking that everyone will reject him and knows the effect that his new body will have on his family. Similar to Gregor, Jay Gatsby,

Pandoras Box Essay

According to Greek mythology, the griefs of life came into existence as a result of the introduction of a woman into a purely man inhabited world. The gods were said to have only created men, until Zeus became angry with mankind and devised the most horrible punishment he could conceive, creating Woman. Zeus instructed the smith of the gods, Hephaestus, to create her from the materials of earth and make her irresistibly beautiful. Each of the Greek gods gave her a gift of skill, and aptly named her Pandora, meaning all gifted. The messenger god, Hermes, with his winged sandals, took Zeus ghastly creation down to earth, and with her a box given to her by the gods with instructions that it never be opened. Although this prevention of disease is theoretically possible, public fears and apprehensions have prevented this science from being applicable to humans thus far. With all is known about genes and DNA, the science of genetic engineering has few limitations except moral and ethical codes. The great effects that this new technology has to offer far outweighs the minute possibility that implications could arise. Under restrictions, the availability of genetic modification should be available to allow parents the choice for the prevention of suffering for their child.

One such apprehension against genetic modification is on the basis of naturalistic fallacy, as Watson refers to it in his book DNA: The Secret of Life. This philosophical approach is taken by many when disputing the use of genetic modification. The common belief underpinning naturalistic fallacy is the assumption that the way nature intended is best. Society is intolerable to the idea of disturbing the so called natural order of things, yet so much of one s life is already unnatural. Through pharmaceuticals, selective breeding, preservatives, and implantable devices into the body, such as pacemakers, one completely disregards his or her beloved fallacy and

inadvertently adopts the assumption that the most effective way is best, even if it is not the natural way. Even hundreds of years ago, society s ancestors

I always knew that I was Irish. How could you not with the last name Murphy?
