Powerful

Powerful Women V. Submissive Women by Sean Conolly

Ancient societies and their cultures traditionally provided women with no access to power. It was nearly universal for women to be treated as subservient to men while being expected to behave mildly and submissively. The New Testament makes no exception. The Apostle Paul explains that through Christ, women are absolved of constraints that the social hierarchy imposes on them, but he later goes on to explain that even in Christ a religious hierarchy still exists. By acknowledging that women are inferior to men in both the social and religious circles, Paul presents women as subordinates. This contrasts with Njal s Saga. Through the saga s characters Gunnhild, Hallgerd, and Bergthora, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This suggestion is eventually confirmed when she successfully convinces the King to accept Hrut as a bodyguard (Njal s Saga, 8). Even though the King is the superior, Gunnhild still possesses the ability to influence him. Her influence demonstrates her ability to assume and exercise a degree of power. It is through her power that Gunnhild goes on to instigate a chain of events. After having Hrut as a lover for several seasons, Gunnhild reasserts her power when Hrut asks to return to Iceland. Though she lets him return, she sends a curse along with him. She says, If I have as much power over you as I think I have, then I cast this spell: you will not have sexual pleasure with the woman you plan to marry in Iceland, though you ll be able to have your will with other women. Neither of us comes out of this well, because you did not tell me the truth (Njal s Saga, 13). The curse she places on Hrut actually comes true (Njal s Saga, 16). Hrut cannot please his wife and Gunnhild s desire to hold a degree of dominance over Hrut is fulfilled. Because Hrut wants to please his wife but cannot, his desires are unfulfilled. This suggests that Gunnhild s demands and desires are superior to those of men. It is the demands and desires of a woman that instigate events. The author immediately presents Gunnhild in the very first significant

Market and resource seeking: this motivation was particularly strong for companies that had some intrinsic advantage, typically related to their technology and brand recognition, which gave them a competitive advantage in offshore markets (Bartlett Beamish, 2014).

Competitive positioning: the most controversial of the many global competitive strategic actions taken by MNEs...have been those base on cross subsidization of markets (Bartlett Beamish, 2014).

Global scanning/ learning: when trying to get low cost resources, the company is exposed to new technologies and markets (Bartlett Beamish, 2014).

We do not need magic to transform our world; we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already. (Rowling, J.K.). Many people believe that those who are successful had everything handed to them on a silver platter and did not even bother to lift a finger. While this may be true for some, it is most certainly not true for all. Not everyone has the privilege of starting at the top. J.K. Rowling is an excellent example of a person who started at rock bottom and instead of sitting in a corner feeling sorry for herself, she worked her way to the top with blood, sweat, and tears, never stopping until she got to where she wanted to be. Jo was a fascinating storyteller, and would often sit for hours telling her sister tale after tale. They would invent games together, and play them with each other (Steffens 9). When she was five, Jo began attending St. Michael s Church of England School. Her mother walked with her to school each day. Joanne was confused at first, because she walked home with her mother for lunch every day, but had to return to school after eating. Once she understood that she would go to school before and after lunch, Joanne was delighted to attend (Peterson Hilleque 15). Joanne and her family moved to Tutshill when she was nine years old. In the fall of 1974, she began attending Tutshill Church of England Primary School. She had a dreadful time in the beginning. Her teacher created a seating chart based on the aptitude of her students. She used the results of a math test that involved fractions, a concept Joanne had not yet learned. She was seated on the dull side of the room with the other students who lacked potential in their teacher s eyes. Joanne worked hard and applied herself in school and was eventually promoted to sit on the bright side of the room with the other students believed to be intelligent and have lots of potential (Peterson Hilleque

Anna O Case Study

Case of Anna O Carey Wolf Argosy University 2016 Case of Anna O Background Anna O was 21 year old patient of Breuer. Anna O had developed strange symptoms while taking care of her father who was ill. She developed a cough along with paralysis, hallucinations, hysteria, and loss of feeling in her arms and legs as well as muscle spasms. Breuer could not figure out why Anna was experiencing these types of symptoms so he deemed it hysterical neurosis (Heller, 2005). While under hypnosis Anna s symptoms were not as severe and she could recall dramatic events that had taken place in her life prior to her symptoms. We now know that Freud used Anna s case to help develop his clinical experience even though he never treated or worked with her. The repressed and non repressed unconscious tends to function side by side. The repressed unconscious buries traumatic events and the non repressed unconscious receives and deals with the non traumatic events. According to Freud, Anna transferred her repressed unconscious on to Breuer while Breuer received transference of the unconscious from Anna and returned them back to her. (Campbella Pile, 2010). Jung agrees with Freud that personal conscious is a repository of content previously conscious, even though they may have been forgotten. For example; collective unconscious can be hereditary and transferred to another, which is why Jung agreed with Freud s argument that Anna transferred her affect to Breuer. Both Jung and Freud agree that a human s unconsciousness is buried deep and few are able to reach it on a psychoanalysis level. However, Jung disagreed with Freud s claims that sexuality is the basis of unconscious

The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins Between Hell And Reason

In his novel Between Hell and Reason, Albert Camus states, Utopia is that which is in contradiction with reality. Evidently, utopias are nonexistent in actuality, but visions of a perfect society may distance an individual from reality. However, concepts of ideal societies cannot be visualized without first analyzing the errors and weaknesses presented within dystopias. These defects, including the restriction of independent thought, lack of freedom, and constant surveillance and control, are presented through the real world, films, and literature. In the works The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan, and World War Z by Max Brooks, authors create dystopias in which ethical issues are presented to fuel one s imagination regarding what qualities a utopia may possess. In her novel The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins expands upon dystopian elements such as the restriction of independent thought and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the Capitol purposely omits Katniss s decorating Rue s body with flowers because the Capitol could not allow the audience to witness a bonding moment between the districts. Also, the Capitol inflicts corporal punishment towards those who even show signs of rebellion. One example is the Avox who had been punished for being a rebel against the Capitol. Inhumanity of Slaveholders

Death is better than slavery. Slavery has affected both male and female, in many different ways. Douglas and Jacobs were not very different male and female yes, but how they were treated were quite similar. Slavery can also affect children and infants. Slavery has many different themes to prove what slavery is all about. It seems obvious to everyone that slavery was so very awful it s proven in these two stories,

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs. Inhumanity of slaveholders to slaves is one of the worst crimes committed.

Epithelial tissues; simple cuboidal The simple cuboidal tissues are, as its name implies, a single layer of cuboid shaped cells with large, spherical central nuclei. The simple cuboidal tissue can be found, lining various ducts and glands, within the walls of the renal tubules, the surface of ovaries, the lining of the urinary system (nephrons) and parts of the thyroid and eye. They are able to transmit information from their surroundings to nerve cells, which they then convey sensory information to the brain. Another role of the columnar cells are secretion and this is because they are known to secrete mucus, gastric juices and tears into the different ducts within the body. They are also known for absorption and this is because they line the intestines and are responsible for absorbing nutrients from digested food. The propulsion role has been found within the columnar cells because they have been found in the lining of organs such as the fallopian tubes and lungs. Within these organs they are known to move together to help propel material in one direction, in the case of the lungs they are able to move mucus from within the lungs into the throat and within the fallopian tubes they are known for moving eggs through th fallopian tubes and into the uterus. The last role of the columnar cells is protection and this is because they are designed to protect the tissues in which they line. The columnar epithelial tissue can be found within the lining and ducts of various body parts such as the ears, nose, taste buds, digestive tract, lungs and fallopian tubes simple squamous Squamous cells have the appearance of thin, flat plates and are referred to as pavement cells due to their shape and appearance.

The Relationship Between Density And Sugar Content

The Relationship Between Density and Sugar Content

Partners: Emily Alexander, Bill Dempsey, Shayla Ho

Lab Performed 03/11/15 Lab Report 04/07/15

Abstract:

Using solutions of sugar and water alongside cola, density and percent sugar can be related. The purpose of this lab is to discover how and with what benefit these factors can be related. Using assorted measurements and the standard curve of the calculated densities and percentages of sugar solutions, it was learned that cola has an approximate percent sugar of four percent, according to the calculations of the lab. Other results included actual percent sugar of soda and various statistics on measured sugar solutions. Introduction

The purpose of this lab is to explore how density can be used to measure sugar content and percent sugar of beverages not only in the lab, but in the real world. Using the standard curve of the percent sugar and density of the solutions in the lab, the percent sugar of regular Coke was determined. The standard curve represented the general trend in the correlation of the values calculated in the lab. Using the data from the experiment, the actual amount of sugar in the soda could be calculated by using the percent sugar found by using the standard curve. (If the soda has a mass of x and the percent sugar is the value y, x ● y = mass of sugar.)

Of course, the simple calculation of percent sugar dividing the mass of the sugar by the mass of the solution can be

William Bryant Biography Essay

William Bryant did not have a happy childhood. Bryant was born to a surgeon who lost everything and was forced into moving the family in with his Grandparents. Bryant grew up in Cummington, MA, and was a reserved child due to family circumstances. Bryant worked on the farm as a child and was fascinated with nature at an early age. His education consisted of being a prized pupil with an imposed strict regimen which was enforced under the threat of a switch. Bryant s surroundings required him to make companionships of his thoughts that he gathered from nature. At a young age he learned meter and poetrythrough hymns from Isaac Watts, taught by his grandfather, a deacon in the church. His continued education consisted of homeschooling by his... Bryant enrolled in Williams College where he was not challenged and withdrew to return home with hopes to enroll into Yale. While at Williams College he succeeded; however, his most conspicuous achievement as a student, Descriptio Gulielmopolis, satirically expressed discontent with Williamstown and living conditions at the college; still more disappointing was the absence of intellectual zest among pale faced, moping students [who] crawl/like spectral monuments of woe ( Biography: William Cullen Bryant ). Due to the financial situation of his family Bryant s Yale endeavors diminished. He took up law for the money; however, his yearning for Yale never ceased. During this time Bryant flourished in law and entered the bar in 1815, opened a law office, and practiced law at the age of 22; he left poetry to an additional role in his life. During his adulthood he was plagued with death and a reevaluation of religion. Even though law offered him a better life, he once again turned to

How Has Apollo 13 Changed

Apollo 13 was the seventh mission in the Apollo program, and the third designed to bring man to the moon. However, the mission was aborted after a catastrophic oxygen tank explosion left the crew without little heat, potable water, and an increasing level of carbon dioxide in the cabin. Despite the challenges faced, the crew managed to return safely to earth, with careful guidance of the ground crew, on April 17, 1970. On April 11, 1970, Apollo 13was launched from the Kennedy Space Center. After launch, variations in engine start time caused the spacecraft to deviate from its planned trajectory. Despite this, however, Apollo 13 made its way into orbit after approximately two and a half hours. At approximately hour 56, an overheated fan in the oxygentank number two caused the liquid oxygen in the tank to boil faster than the safety valve could release it, resulting in the tank exploding. Shrapnel from the tank number two explosion damaged vital components on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First and foremost, an isolated oxygen tank was installed on all future ships, used only to supply the crew with oxygen to breathe. In addition, all shared oxygen tanks (tanks used for both breathing and running fuel cells) were isolated from each other, to prevent a cascading decrease in pressure in the event of a single tank failure. Next, filters and fan wiring were removed from inside the tank itself and placed on an external line. The insulation on tank electrical components was changed from teflon to stainless steel sheathed magnesium oxide. Additionally, a 400 amp hour battery was to be installed on the landing module to decrease the need for power rationing. Finally, bottled/bagged water was placed inside the cabin of the spacecraft (whereas on Apollo 13 it was located only in the landing module), to provide the crew with drinking water even in the event of a total failure of the fuel

A Doll s House by Henrik Ibsen Essay

A Doll s House by Henrik Ibsen We have all felt the need to be alone or to venture to places that our minds have only imagined. However, we as individuals have always found ourselves clutching to our responsibilities and obligations, to either our jobs or our friends and family. The lingering feeling of leaving something behind or of promises that have been unfulfilled is a pain that keeps us from escaping. People worldwide have yearned for a need to leave a situation or seek spiritual fulfillment elsewhere. The need for one s freedom and their responsibility to others can make or break a person. (Isben 59) Just so she could release some tension that was probably building inside her due to all the restrictions that Torvald had set up, such as forbidding macaroons. The need for her to consume these macaroons behind her controlling husband s back was a way for her to satisfy her sense of needing to be an independent woman. Upon the arrival of her old friend Kristine Linde, Nora took it upon herself to find her friend a job since she had gone through a lot in her life. She asked her husband Torvald, who also happened to be the new manager at the bank if Kristine could have a job and he responded with an afirmative response. Mrs. Helmer had also stated that she had single handedly saved her husband s life when she took out a loan for his benefit. However, in those days women were unable to get a loan without their husband s consent or another male s signature, so Nora took it upon herself to forge her father s signature in order to secure the welfare of Torvald. She saw it as her obligation as a loving wife to break the law so she would be able to save a life, especially when it was the life of her husband. Others though saw it as a criminal offence; Nils Krogstad for example accused Nora of violating the law to which Nora replied: This I refuse to believe.
