Prison Labor In The 19th Century

In the 19th century, all eyes were open to change in a society where everyone should have the same access to fairness. It was the concept of social justice. In 1841, a Boston woman named Dorothea Dix witnessed the horrifying conditions of mentally ill people and prisoners, while teaching Sunday school at a jail. According to History Alive, Most were locked in dirty, crowded prison cells. If they misbehaved, they were whipped. Additionally, Massachusetts had one private asylum for the mentally ill and only the wealthy could afford to treat their families. Therefore, most families were marginalized in society, had minor access to social justice and could not treat family members with mental illness (considered marginalized populations). This... According to the Atlantic Magazine, prison incarcerated rates are increasing with more than 2.2 million people convicted, the largest prison population around the world. Simultaneously, prison labor has expanded throughout the country, including works of mining, agriculture, and different stations of manufacturing. As the incercated rates are increasing, states are modifying the criminal justice system to insure the social justice of prisoners in slave labor. These forms include certain protection accessed as an employee and prison worker such as the support of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Consequently, the duly convicted (prisoners), lack a constitutional right to be free of forced servitude (The Atlantic Magazine). Furthermore, the country s laws limit prisoner s human rights, even when considering the laws against slavery. This displays the social justice given to incarcerate citizens. In the 19th century, Dorothea Dix campaigned for better conditions in prisons and was fighting to fix the justice system in states of cruel punishments. Today, conditions in prisons have improved from the chained horrors, however; social reform movements are taking place to advocate for slave labor. With contradicting views of convict slave labor, we are trying to fix our justice system in a society calling out for

Rust et al(1996) also defines service as any act or performance that one part can offer to another that is essentially intangible and does not result in the ownership of anything, Gronroos(1990) defines service as an activity or series of activity of more or less intangible nature that normally, but not necessary, take place in interaction between customers and service employees and/or physical resources or goods and/or system of service provider, which are provided as solutions to customer problems.

Characteristics of services

Services possess some unique characteristics which differentiate them from goods or physical products. These peculiar characteristics pose challenges in their delivery and meeting customers expectation. Services are characterized by intangibility, inseparability, heterogeneity or variability, lack of ownership and perishability. Due to this characteristics Kotler (1984) suggested that measuring service quality is subjective and for this reason marketers strive to put tangible cues as one of the way to address the challenges of delivering the service and to meet expectation of targeted customers.

Service quality; Service quality as a subjective phenomenon of service is defined differently by different scholars;

Manfred et al(2006) defines service quality in terms of customers expectation and perception of service provided. Zeithaml(1998) considers service quality

Increasingly, modern medicine is looking to an ancient medicinal practice to give joint pain sufferers relief. What is Acupuncture?

The most common side effect is bleeding and/or bruising where the skin is punctured by the acupuncture needles and sometimes some minor soreness. Doctors and reputable Acupuncturists follow the common practice of using clean needles and disinfecting the skin with an alcohol swab before inserting the need to prevent infection and they never share needles between patients.

Acupuncture may be an effective treatment option for you. If you haven t found adequate relief from standard medical treatment, then ask your doctor about trying this increasingly popular medical alternative. You have nothing to lose except perhaps your joint pain.

Could Chiropractic Treatment Help Ease Your Joint Pain?

Christianized Negros Summary

The nineteenth century was a patriarchal society and highly dominated by religion. Religion controlled the minds and thoughts of the people and all the laws were made on the basis of religious importances. Women were mostly the victims of authorities misjudgment and had their rights violated in such a male dominated society. Salemwitch trials is the epitome of one of the worst case in human rights violation, where innocent people were executed because they were accused of witchcraft. Lack of any scientific evidences, judgments were made on the basis of religious beliefs and thus many people suffered the consequences. The editor of The Heath Anthology of American Literature, Paul Lauter quotes The issues these works address remain alive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since he was born in a Puritan family, his inclination was towards religion. Although later he made some scientific contributions, he is also criticized for lending his supporting on Salem witch trials . The trial resulted in the execution of innocent people and is considered to be the worst judgment by authorities to violate the human rights. Thus, Salem witch trials can be seen as an example of class warfare between authorities and suppressed groups. In his essay, Christianized Negros , Mather quotes Black slaves, he says, can be converted from this deplorable state into candidates of eternal blessedness. If they are not converted, Mather warns, they will remain brutish creatures susceptible to the devil s work . Mather carried the Puritan s belief in Christian ideology, which was a barrier for the equality at the time in Puritan society. Mather s devout Christianity also signals an inherent bias, one that excludes other forms of worships and religious ideologies. This belief led some to think that, he was not a person who could support for equalness. Although, the era in which Mather and Jacobs lived had a huge gap, it was not different for the women during these times to come out front and live freely as their male

The Gravediggers In Matt Gallagher s Kaboom

In Kaboom, Matt Gallagher, a platoon leader, shares his experiences throughout his time in the military and was originally a blog. Kaboom takes place in Iraq and starts off in 2007 during the war that lasted from 2003 2011. Gallagher started the blog to be able to connect with his loved ones while at war and giving them subtle details about his daily life, the blog was later shutdown. He faces many challenges through the book with his fellow group of soldiers, the gravediggers. Over the course of the story he develops as a person as one can see his maturity and ability to be responsible grow. Some of the many things he faces are IED s which are improvised explosive devices, which is also the reason why he named the book Kaboom. The reader... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reading about the everyday life of a soldier gives you a sense of how some days may be extremely exciting or normal. It seems to help you open one s eyes to the cost of their freedom. I enjoyed this book because the of the many variations of sequences throughout. His writing style kept me interested throughout the book as one felt closer and more involved in the story because of the story telling. Since Matt Gallagher was a soldier, narrating the story from his point of view seems to have been a perfect perspective as you observe brutal honesty and emotion while going about reading. The main development seen on a character in my opinion was Matt Gallagher, this is because one can see his maturity develop and perspective broaden as he becomes more and more dedicated to each passage. Considering that this is a true story, there were not very many plot twist developed as the point of the this was to show the average day of a soldier deployed there, making it easier to foresee certain events. Kaboom was certainly a unique book to the fact that although it may not keeping you guessing at every turn it certainly has its moments where it does and never stops entertaining, whether it draws one in with the humor, or interesting yet cold truths about

Dog Is Man s Best Friend

Dog is Man s Best Friend The image that I chose was a photograph taken by a woman named Elena Shunilova. The photo was taken of her child and their family dog. To me, this image is beautiful. In the center, there is a young boy kneeling down next to a very large dog. It appears to be just transition to winter from autumn. The ground is still brown but snow is faintly falling around the boy and dog. The young boy is wearing a navy blue snow outfit with tan fur accents around the hood and in a ball on top of his hat. His eyes are closed as he is embracing the large dog sitting next to him. It seems to be cold out based on his rosy red cheeks against his very pale skin. The dog stands tall and appears to be older than the boy by the matting in the cream colored fur on his chest. He is black around the jowls as well as his eyes and ears. If the boy were to stand tall next to him, he would barely be taller. The dog s eyes are also closed and his front legs are in a wide stance. The bottom and top of the image are slightly blurred, and very dull in color. It appears to be a very cloudy day. The image itself as well as the setting is enough to raise curiosity in the story behind this photograph. There are some aspects of this image that really stood out to me. Typically, when you introduce children to large dogs, or really any animals, they are terrified and do not want to be around them. I can only imagine walking up to an animal that stands taller than you; I would be

Dear

Dear Death,

My name is Markus Zusak, I was born in June 23rd ,1975 in Sydney, Australia. I am still in this world but you are more present in my life than you think.

I am the youngest of four children of an immigrant German mom, Lisa and an Austrian dad, Helmut. Neither of my parents could write or read when they first arrived in Australia, but they always wanted me and my siblings to master the language and always encouraged us to read and communicate in English.

I began writing fiction when I was only 16. Before becoming a professional writer, I was a janitor, a house painter and a high school English teacher. I went to the University of New South Wales and studied English and History. After a lot of work, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Education. In 1999, my first novel, The Underdog, was published, after many initial rejections. The novel, was loosely based on me and my own brother. My second and third novels, Fighting Ruben Wolfe (published in 2000) and When Dogs Cry ( published 2001), were a sequel from my first novel, they were a total success. Fighting Ruben Wolfe received an award from the American Library Association, considered the Best Book for Young Adults. When Dogs Cry received an award for Young Adult Fiction from the Queensland ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The book was vaguely based on my parent s stories and experiences during WWII. I remember when my mom told me a story about something that happened when she was six. She heard a noise that sounded like cattle being herded down the street. It was people being herded from a concentration camp. There was an old man who couldn t keep up with everyone else, and a boy gave him a piece of bread. They were both whipped, one for giving the bread, one for taking it. When you see a soldier chase a boy down and beat him to the ground for being kind to somebody, when you see that when you re six, what could you possibly make of

Impact Of Reconstruction During The Reconstruction Period

Unit 1 Paper The United States changed dramatically during the reconstruction period. After the reconstruction period, the United Stated continued to adjust well as we see it change economically and politically. Though the adjustment continued to go well, the change that occurs after reconstruction is emphasized with industrialization and the impact that industrialization has in certain regions of the U.S and on the people. Along with the new economy came with complications that affected the improvement of conditions in work and in life. During the Gilded Age, there is a difference between the North and South economies. When industrialization started to consume the United States, the North quickly adapted to the change as cities begin to develop allowing citizens to move to industrial cities in search of new opportunities such as employment. On page 592 it states the rapid expansion of factory production, mining, and railroad construction in all parts of the country except the South signaled the transition from Lincoln s America to a mature industrial society demonstrating how the South failed to adapt to the new industrial society. The South did not really adapt to industrialization as they stuck to their agricultural ways. The new industrial society created the interest of the American West. The American West begins to capture the attention of many people as it becomes an area of opportunity. On page 602, Frederick Jackson Turner argued that on the Western frontier the

The Party For Freedom And The Socialist Party

By definition, Nationalism is an ideology in which a group s recognition and espouse of their identity, as a nation, is expressed based on a common origin, in addition to the desire to spread their global influence. Through analysis of the Netherlands Party for Freedom (PVV) and the Netherlands Socialist Party (Socialistische Partij) alongside the World Values Survey, I will assess the values of each party and compare their supporters through various variables in order to further examine Nationalism. In comparison of the Party for Freedom and the Socialist Party, I will focus on the country s answer toward the question: Which party would you vote for if there were a national election tomorrow, as well as analyze the various demographics involved. The Netherlandsis run based upon a parliamentary representative democracy with both parties analyzed containing the same number of seats within the parliament. Thus, both parties, despite having different worldviews, carry similarities throughout the nationalistic views of the Dutch people. In order to inaugurate the analysis, we must begin by determining the nationalistic views within the Netherlands and understand the basis behind each party. The Party for freedom is a right wing nationalist party, while the Socialist Party is a left wing social democratic party. Within the current politics of the Netherlands, both parties control an equal number of seats with 15 being in the House of Representatives and 9 being within the
