Descartes, Epictetus, And Plato

As people age, they begin to wonder what is the meaning of life, particularly their own life. It is a natural curiosity and has been thought about for several centuries. Philosophers claim to know, or at least be fairly aware of, what the meaning of life is. Three that come to mind are Rene Descartes, Epictetus, and Plato; these three philosophers have lived through different time periods and differ greatly in theories. Descartes had no true theory but used skepticism to establish his philosophy, Epictetus was a Stoic, and Plato was a Platonist. One, Descartes, lived questioning anything and everything to only be sure of two existences, another, Epictetus, lived perhaps too happily since he believed that everything that occurred in life was a part of God s plan, but one lived in the middle of these two philosophers. This philosopher was Plato, he was not too skeptical of life nor was he too engulfed in God s plan, instead he was rational about life and searched for the deeper meaning to his own being. For this reason, his theories are far more well thought out and reasonable than those of Descartes and Epictetus. In order to understand Descartes way of thinking, it is crucial to note his education. He received a sufficient education in mathematics and science which led to his rejection of scholastic philosophy. He was not only taught about old philosophers such as Plato and Epictetus, but there was a recent philosopher [according to his time] named Montaigne who was a

What Does Mr Hooper Mean When He Continues To Wear The...

Views on this essay range from the American Romanticism characteristics, the symbolisms, and the levels of the parable. For the example of the American romanticism characters in this story, it is only portrayed to be the minister himself, Mr. Hooper. The minister lived his life a man apart from men, shunned in their health and joy, but ever summoned to their aid in mortal anguish (Hawthorne 130). As explained by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the minister uses the black veil as a sort of a cover up for his secret sin so they say that is what he may be hiding. Throughout the story, Hawthorne shows more and more of Mr. Hooper being the main protagonist, but also the main American Romanticismcharacter in the story. Hooper continues to wear the veil through the rest of the day s duties, including a funeral, at which the veil seems an appropriate emblem, and a wedding service, at which it decidedly... Hawthorne includes three levels of parable to help understand the symbolism behind Hooper and why he wears the black veil. The first level would be considered to be that the minister is carrying or in other words covering the sins of others. Just as Jesus Christ died for our sins. The next level would be that you cannot hide your secret sins from anyone not even the all ruling, all powerful God. Lastly, the third one would be that the sin of humanity is the greatest sin which society hides and ignores. What, but the mystery which it obscurely typifies has made this piece of crepe so awful? When the friend shows his inmost heart to his friend; the lover to his best beloved; when man does not vainly shrink from the eye of his creator, loathsomely treasuring up the secret of his in; then deem me a monster, for the symbol beneath which I have lived, and die! I look around me, and, lo! On every visage a Black Veil! (Hawthorne

Economics and health were two independent subjects in high school, but nothing is truly independent in the real world. Supply and demand, one of the principals of economics, perfectly sums up the problem with primary health care. The supply of primary care physicians, also known as PCPs, is lacking by almost 52,000 providers to be able to fulfill the demand of the public within the next couple of years, and this isn t a new issue (Petterson et al., 2012). Since the 1970 s there has been a shortage of PCPs, and it is becoming a bigger problem as the population grows and ages (Wilensky, 2014). The number of PCPs currently in the United States is not enough to meet the needs of the population. The view of primary care physicians and their salaries need to change in the U.S. to encourage more medical students to enter this much needed field of practice. This paper will explore the reasons behind the shortage of PCPs and how the Affordable Care Act and the American Nurses Association are addressing this issue.

From the time I was born until a year ago I had the same primary care physician. He had delivered my older brother and cared for everyone in my family. I didn t go into his office all that often, but when I did he would always remember who I was, and I felt that I had a connection with him. However, last year my physician left his small family practice and began working in an emergency department because he couldn t afford to stay in business. He said that his

Online Brand Engagement Is Different From Offline...

Online brand engagement is qualitatively different from offline engagement as the nature of the customer s interactions with a brand, company and other customers are different on the internet (Chak 2003). Verhoef et al. (2010) support that customer engagement consists of multiple online behaviors as blogging, customer ratings and e word of mouth. Furthermore, they state that customer engagementis affected by firm initiatives, customer characteristics, and environmental/contextual factors (Verhoef et al., 2010). According to Sashi (2012) customer engagement is a topic that has had an emerging interest during the last years, based on the development of Internet and the new tools that have emerged with it Web 2.0 (Sashi, 2012). Due to the increasingly networking society customers can easily interact with other customers and this non transactional customer behavior has become more important for companies when developing their strategies (Verhoef et al., 2010). Hollebeek et al. (2014) and van Doorn et al. (2010) mention how important the understanding of online brand engagement is in the social media platforms as well as recognizing the opportunities for brand to extract value from their followers. Van Doorn (2010) supports also, that it is important for companies to fully understand the impact of customer brand engagement since the digital world involves a broad audience with immediacy breadth. To be more precise, social networks are communities where people are able to

The Bottlenose Dolphin Essay

Have you ever wondered how the Tursiops Truncatus dolphin got its name? It got its name because it s nose, which is short and stubby. The Tursiops Truncatus coloring is different from other dolphins. Their physical appearance is intriguing and distinctive. They have fascinating family life and eating habits. You can even see bottlenose dolphins in many places in the U.S.A. Their main home is the Pacific Ocean, but they also live in many other places. The coloring of the bottlenose dolphinis unique. It is light gray on top and pale pink on bottom. Hydrodynamic motion is impressive water movement or quickly moving water. The bottlenose dolphins head allows for twenty to twenty four sharp, conical teeth on each side of the upper jaw, and eighteen to twenty four teeth on each side of the lower jaw. That gives the bottlenose dolphin seventy six to ninety eight teeth in all! Conical means cone shaped. These teeth might compare to the human incisors. The teeth are used mainly for catching food and holding the food so it won t get away. The eating habits of the dolphin can vary by habitat, location and the food accessibility and availability. Bottlenose dolphins may eat many various aquatic organisms. Usually bottlenose dolphins eat fish and crustaceans. They also may eat octopus, mackerel, cod, herring, mullet, squid and eels, along with shrimp. The adult dolphins take in about four to five percent of their body weight in food each day! The average bottlenose dolphin will consume seven to ten pounds of food a day. Of course, the male will eat more than the female. A nursing mother will eat more than the standard dolphins; she takes in about eight percent of her body weight. When hunting for food dolphins may corner the prey in shallow water. The bottlenose dolphin will usually swallow the prey s head first. For larger fish, such as the impressive hammerhead shark, several bottlenose dolphins will kick it out of the water with their flukes. This injures and stuns the large fish and the

Fedex s Internal and External Environments Essay

FedEx s External and Internal Environments FedEx s external environment both positively and negatively affects the organizations operations. Their external environment consists of government, weather, and the economy. FedEx does not have a very large external environment because their operations are not affect by many outside sources. The government affects FedEx s operations by providing security regulations. The internal environment of FedEx consists of customers, distribution and competitors. This environment determines what FedEx does to succeed in their market. FedEx has two major customers who consist of businesses and individual customers. These business customers have accounts with FedEx to arrive at their location to pick up packages daily or weekly. Two thirds of FedEx s business comes from these customers so FedEx curves their operations to satisfy this clientele. Since FedEx s competition is trying to acquire some of this clientele they have begun to operate and market to this clientele more effectively. Individual customers are also in FedEx s internal environment. These customers represent one third of their business. With increased competition from competitors FedEx has marketed to this market substantially. They have created boxes that are prepaid for shipment as long as the contents fit into the box. This has effectively increased business amongst individual customers for FedEx. FedEx s internal environment also consists of their distribution and delivery of packages. This environment contains FedEx s trucks and planes that it uses to transport their packages for their customers. If their trucks or planes break down FedEx needs to find an alternative or get these vehicle s fixed immediately. Appropriate maintenance and regulatory inspections are done to these vehicle to keep them up and running for FedEx. FedEx s internal environment

In 1260, Nicolo and Maffeo Polo set forth on their first journey to the East. After traveling from the East to the land of the Tartar they reached the Kublai Khan court. The Khan questioned them about the Catholic faith and asked them to return to Europe and request the pope to send missionaries. However, when the two explorers returned they learned that Pope Clement was dead. After that discovery they also revealed Nicolo s wife had died while giving birth to a son, who is now in his teenage years. After the passing of the Pope there was a long delay in naming a new one. In 1271, Marco Poloset forth navigating across exotic lands with his father and uncle on a journey that lasted several years. Marco Polo discovered trade and religion that has brought the world together today. The beginning of their journey led to them being accepted into the Kublai KhanCourt. This journey took place across deserts, mountains, and seas in East Asia, continuing along the Silk Road, and through regions that were unknown to the Western World. Also, they had many encounters with creatures, plants, and humans from different cultures. Through acceptance and service, Marco Polo was led to places far away that were rich of gems, gold, and silk. Yet, when participating in a military conflict in 1298 he was taken captive. Marco Polo, the son of a Venetian merchant and traveler, has become one of the most famous European travelers because of the documentation of his journey. Marco Polo

(3 6 sentences. 3.0 points) Three trends that I ve noticed that could be generated into a small business are fitness, healthy food, and eco friendly products. I think that since the New Year has begun, and more people every day want to be fit, that if I could make many fitness products (water bottles, clothes, shoes, etc.) and make a lot of money from that. The second small business opportunity would be healthy food. I could buy health food products from other companies who sell them, make a name for myself on social media, and sell those same products too nationwide wholefood stores in good neighborhoods that have people coming and buying expensive products on the daily /weekly. Lastly, I could repeat the steps I took for the healthy foods with eco friendly, and the only difference would be the amount of money I d make. Comparing Fahrenheit 451 And The Eleventh Plague

Contrasting starkly with both Fahrenheit 451 and The Eleventh Plague, Jak II is a video game sequel for the Playstation 2 created by Naughty Dog, LLC, which focuses on Jak and his partner Dexter who join an underground resistance in order to fight back the leader who had Jak tested on. Going through the game, many common characteristics found around Haven City, the setting of the game, are unnecessary brutality from the authority figures, abuse of power from many wealthy characters, and the unjust treatment of low class citizens. When walking around the open world in Jak II, a common sight are the Krimzon Guards, the authority figures, which are meant to exaggerate police brutality. Sporting red armor with a gas mask and a Blast Morph Gun,

Essay on Premarital Cohabitation

Premarital Cohabitation is a rapidly growing phenomenon in our society today. Cohabitation is defined as two people living in the same household who are unrelated, and of the opposite sex (Kunz, 2012). There are many studies that state disadvantages to cohabitating, before marriage, but at the same time there are many studies stating little to no difference in cohabitating couples and couples who did not cohabitate before marriage. There are quite of few different types of cohabitationbefore marriage that Kunz (2012) lists her book. A very common type is the trail marriage, the opportunity for couples to test out their compatibility in a long term mindset. This is more typical of college students and graduates rather than that of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Premarital cohabitation has become immensely popular with the younger generations. In 1970 there were 500,000 cohabitating couples and in 2000 there were 7.5 million and that number is rapidly growing (Kunz, 2012). Statistics show that nearly two thirds of Americans will most likely cohabitate with a relationship partner before marriage (Gordon, 2012). Some researchers relate this to the rising divorce rate in America, coming in at nearly 50 percent of marriages, to cohabitation before marriage. This concept is called the cohabitation effect. A couple cohabitating before marriage is automatically associated with a higher risk for divorce. Although there have been studies denying these claims that cohabitating before marriage has a little effect on marriage stability, they have their exceptions. Kunz (2012) states that the cohabitation effect isn t as prominent as researchers originally thought. Its been shown that when a couple cohabitates before marriage, with the intent to marry in the future, they have equal experiences as a couple who did not cohabitate before marriage. The marriage stability and health of the couple did not differ. Here s where the studies and statistics that prove higher divorce rates and poor health come in. These conditions are found in couples who cohabitate before marriage with no intent to become married in the future. These types of cohabitating relationships relate to negative communication between

Western Ecosystems Technology Vs. Greenhunter Wind Energy

One of the worst business law decisions to emerge in the past decade is Western Ecosystems Technology v. GreenHunter Wind Energy LCC. GreenHunter Resources, Inc. is a publicly traded company from Delaware that focuses on water management solutions for oil and gas operations in the Eagle Ford, Marcellus and Bakken shale basins. GreenHunter Resources Inc. was formed to be the first publicly traded renewable energycompany based in the United States that provides to investors a portfolio of diversified assets in the alternative energy sector. Their business plan was to acquire businesses and operate assests in the wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and biofuels (biodiesel and ethanol) renewable energy sectors. They aimed to change the way power and renewable energy fuels are produced and distributed. Their main goal was to be more efficient and facilitate increased stockholder value. GreenHunter had 3 separate divisions, one including wind energy space. Once GreenHunter s SEC filings had been reviewed, it showed that their operating divisions were organized in the form of a single member LLC subsidiary below the parent company; the wind energy division was organized under GreenHunter Wind Energy, LLC. In 2006 GreenHunter Wind Energy, LLC participated in a reverse acquisition in which the company would become its sole member and corporate parent (GreenHunter Resources, Inc.)
