The Effect Of Explicit Lexical Elaboration On Second...
Several researchers in the area of input modification have examined the effect of this technique on second language learner s comprehension (Oh, 2001; Brewer, 2008; Maxwell, 2011) and others investigate its effect not only on comprehension but also on vocabulary learning (Urano, 2000; Kim, 1996). Some studies showed that there was no significant difference in learning second language vocabularies between using readingelaborated text with unmodified texts (Chung, 1995; Kim; 1996; Silvia, 2000).
Mosavi (2014) investigate the effect of explicit lexical elaboration on second language vocabulary learning in writing of 70 Iranian learners. Learners were randomly divided into two groups, both groups had the same reading text but for elaborated version target words had its synonyms or definitions right after them, for example, X has the same meaning as Y, which can be named as the most explicit elaboration device. A time limit was conducted for learners to read the text, in the elaborated group, learners were asked to pay attention to the target form while reading. When they finished the reading process they had to answer the reading comprehension questions and after that write a paragraph with the same topic with the reading comprehension text. This writing considers as the post test which learners do not have the permission for using dictionaries, peer help or teacher guidance. They just had the topic familiarity. The results of this study revealed that if learners write their
James Baldwin s Remember This House By James Baldwin
James baldwin was an American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic. His essays were mostly of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, mostly in mid 20th century America. Some of Baldwin s essays are book length, for instance The Fire Next Time (1963), No Name in the Street (1972), and The Devil Finds Work (1976). An unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, was expanded upon and adapted for cinema as the Academy Award nominated documentary film I Am Not Your Negro. Writer and playwright James Baldwinwas born August 2, 1924, in Harlem, New York. One of the 20th century s greatest writers, Baldwin broke new literary ground with the exploration of racial and social issues in his many works. He was especially well known for his essays on the black experience in America.
Baldwin was born to a young single mother, Emma Jones, at Harlem Hospital. She reportedly never told him the name of his biological father. Jones married a Baptist minister named David Baldwin when James was about three years old. Despite their strained relationship, he followed in his stepfather s footsteps who he always referred to as his father during his early teen years. He served as a youth minister in a Harlem Pentecostal church from the ages of 14 to 16. Baldwin developed a passion for reading at an early age, and demonstrated a gift for writing during his school years. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, where he worked on the school s magazine
Teaching Agriculture For College Students
Teaching agriculture to college students may be his profession, but his priority is their safety.
Rudy Ritz, Ph.D, is an assistant professor within Texas Tech University s Department of Agricultural Education and Communications.
Ritz said he believes many tragic occurrences and recent events in society may be a primary reason behind why campus carry is becoming a reality.
People are concerned about their safety, their students and families, Ritz said. I think people have finally realized that 99.99 percent of firearm owners are responsible, respectable, law abiding citizens.
Andy Hart, Ph.D., Extension 4 H and youth development specialist, is a close friend and colleague of Ritz. Dr. Ritz is a good instructor, Hart said, I do not think that students carrying guns on campus would bother him at all.
He said Ritz is not a professor that seems to encounter many issues with students and does not think he will ever have to fear for his life because of an upset student.
Ritz said he suspects that if a criminal or rogue outlaw wanted to bring a gun into his classroom prior to the legalization of campus carry, they are probably already doing so.
A sign or a law is not going to stop someone that is not a law abiding citizen, Ritz said.
Ritz also said he does not think campus carry will affect his job negatively.
Hart said he thinks campus carry could possibly cause some distractions for Ritz and other professors. I think the reason that campus carry was made legal was to

From Darkness to Sunlight: An Analysis of the Allegory of the Cave
Imagine yourself sitting inside a dark, damp, cave where the only thing you can see are moving shadows on the cave wall in front of you. You can t move anywhere or see anything besides the shadows, and these are the only things you ve seen for your entire life, so these moving dark images are the most real things you ve ever known. At some point in our childhood we were mentally in this state of darkness, we didn t know anything about the world or have any complex thoughts. How then, were we brought out of our caves of darkness and misunderstanding? The Allegory of the Caveis a well known section of Plato s ... Above and behind them a fire is blazing at a distance, and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way; and you will see, if you look, a low wall built along the way, like the screen which marionette players have in front of them, over which they show the puppets. (Plato) This entire passage is a dialogue between Socrates and Glaucon. Glaucon was the older brother of Plato, and Socrates was the teacher of Plato and Glaucon at his academy. This is a conversation that is fictional but the fact that it is a conversation between a teacher and his student shows that the teacher is trying to tell his student an analogous tale to teach him a lesson and that is the purpose behind the way the paragraph is written, but the exact lesson being taught by Socrates isn t revealed until later in the passage. This is also the reason the diction in these paragraphs is so formal, because the teacher is giving a formal lesson and at the same time trying to speak in terms his student will understand, and to engage thought in the mind of his student because he is

Week 3 Case Study 2 Submission A critical infrastructure is defined as any facility, system, or function which provides the foundation for national security, governance, economic vitality, reputation, and way of life. (http://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/NIPP_InfoSharing.pdf)In short, critical infrastructureis by definition essential for the survival of the nation. The USA PATRIOT Act specifically defines critical infrastructure as systems and assets, whether physical or virtual, (Jena Baker McNeill and Richard Weitz, 2010) so vital to the United States that the incapacity or destruction of such systems and assets would have a debilitating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, one could base the concept in notions about the value of human life. This asset value approach is usually taken when the idea of continuity is considered. The way it s usually put is by saying that the continuity, or continued operation, of a critical infrastructure is essential for the maintenance of human life and/or the maintenance of some standard of living that people have become accustomed to. The continuity of critical infrastructure is essential to avoid panic and hysteria during the impact of a disaster. Every day, a person s life is shaped or affected in some way by one or more critical infrastructures. Life, as we know it, is not possible without critical infrastructures, and they are all connected together in a system of systems where failure in one can cascade into a failure of all. This line of thinking is not only important to authorities who want to make sure that life stays worth living, but it is also the hope and dream of terrorists to find that one small chunk in the armor which makes the whole house come down. (Jena Baker McNeill and Richard Weitz, 2010) In other words, terrorism represents the ultimate anti continuity. Yet, others approach the concept of infrastructure as representing those things indispensable for cultural purposes. This is the thinking behind identification of
