A Functional Theory Of Group Decision Making In 12 Angry Men

In the filmed 12 Angry Men all the jurors had to make a decision on whether or not the young boy will be guilty or not guilty. In the textbook Group Dynamics by Donelson R. Forsyth, chapter 11 is about decision making. The author states that a functional theory of group decision making suggest that groups engage in a sequence of activities and operations as they move from uncertainty to decisional conviction and that each step in the series serves some purpose (p.359). The jurors all went around the room after they voted to state why each of them decided that vote. They were all discussing facts about the murder trial, making each other learn more about it and looking at specific details and evidence to be able to all make the right decision. The jurors have an orientation, discussion, decision stage to be able to deliberate the case. An orientation stage is when decisions begin with a problem that needs a solution (Forsyth, p.360). In this case was the young boy was being accused of murdering his father, the jurors had to come up with a deliberationof it. The discussion stage is to expand the information given, gathering the facts, and apprise all possible solutions before making the best decision (Forsyth, p.361). All the jurors made sure they were saying important details that happened in the scene before they all made the final decision. The decision stage is where they combined individual s input in a single group decision (Forsyth, p.365). Towards the end, all the jurors combined and agree that the boy was not guilty and deliberated the case. Influence plays a big role in this film. Social influence is the interpersonal processes that change the thoughts, feeling, or behavior of another person (Forsyth, p.203). This happened with the jurors. At the beginning 11 jurors voted guilty and the 8th juror voted not guilty. The 8th juror explained the reasons why he made that decision and elaborated on the murder. Toward the end, while they were re votingagain all the jurors change their opinion and voted not guilty. They got influenced by one another to change their opinion and vote not guilty. Conformity also played an important role in this film. Conformity is a change in a member s opinions,

Burger King Argumentative Analysis

One of the first hamburger chain was born more than 100 years ago. Since then hundreds of burger chains have prospered; top competitors today are McDonald s, Wendy s, Burger King. And this argument discusses why Burger King is the best burger chain among those three. By stating straightforward, Mcdonald s share the most in the hamburger industry. However, Burger King is much better than McDonald s business wise, taste wise, and charity wise. Burger King was founded in 1954, and is the second largest hamburger chain in the world. Burger King serves in 79 countries and every day, more than 11 million people come to Burger King around the world. Although McDonald s is the largest company with 68 million people visiting everyday and serving in 119 countries, Burger King is beating McDonald s in business. McDonald s sales are declining. According to CNN, McDonald s had a 2% drop in sales in July 2015, also they are planning to close about 500 restaurants in 2016. This means less and less people are going to McDonald s. Meanwhile, according to the Wall Street Journal, Burger King had 9.6 percent increase in its sales in April 2015, it also had an 8% increase in July 2015, and 11.2% increase in October 2015. This statistics mean more and more people are coming to Burger King. Burger King has been growing non stop since 2012 is the fastest growing company. The reason behind the growth of Burger King is its advertising tactics. Burger King sells unique burgers, such as

Halo 5 Research Paper

Halo 5: Guardians, the latest title developed by 343 Industries and Microsoft Game Studios brings the Halo Experience to the Xbox One, utilizing the next generation hardware the new Xbox has to offer. New hardware for the Xbox also means new changes for Halo with larger maps, refined gameplay, and beautiful aesthetics. With Halo being Microsofts biggest franchise for the Xbox, they re really hoping that this Halo will reignite this console seller s popularity. Unfortunately, Halo 5: Guardians barely does that with its story and campaign falling flat on its face. The first question gamers have in mind about any game is whether or not the gameplay is good. Today s generation of gamers love fast paced shooters and Halo 5: Guardians is one of a kind. With thruster packs, sprint, and new spartan abilities, the features force older players to adapt to a new kind of Halo. As someone who has played every Halo game besides Halo: Spartan Strike, these changes can be a double edged sword as those used to the old design of Halo might not play because of this. If you love fast paced games however, than this is the game for you. That being said, Halo 5: Guardians still suffers from its poorly designed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

From capture the flag to slayer, Arena is the best place to have small, faced paced battles. This shows that 343 Industries has made a complete 180° in its view of the multiplayer. In Halo 4, the game felt much more casual and relaxed compared to its predecessors, but in terms of Halo 5, the game feels like it solely focuses on skill. The ranking system of Halo 5 also takes an inspiration of several successful eSports titles like League of Legends in an attempt to make it easier for players to enter the Arena. Overall the multiplayer is the main source of fun and so far it hasn t displeased the critics and the

271 Concussions

Not So Hard Headed

The controversy of safety in the National Football League has been escalating over the years due to the increased number of serious head injuries to current and retired NFL players. The concussion controversy started in 1994 when the league created the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Committee and appointed Dr. Elliot Pellman as chairman. Pellman had no previous experience with brain science and stated We discuss it on the list of things every time we have a league meeting ... We think the issue of knees, of drugs and steroids and drinking is a far greater problem, according to the number of incidents (Ezell). Fast forward to April 2013, 4,500 retired NFL players have filed lawsuits against the National Football League stating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In the 2015 season there were 271 total concussions; a fifty eight percent rise from the 2014 season (Seifert, esnp.go.com). Of the 271 concussions, ninety two of them were caused by helmet to helmet contact (Seifert). Dr. Michael C. Miller, former editor of the Harvard Mental Health Letter believes the NFL has taken steps in the right direction but more needs to be done in order to protect future players and preserve the heart of the game. Helmets with better padding and impact monitors cut the risk of sustaining a concussion in half. A group of researchers collected data from 1,800 athletes from eight different college football teams using two versions of a helmet made by Riddell, the VSR4 and the new Revolution . Using sensors in the helmet, they recorded hits experienced by players and found a fifty four percent reduction of concussion risk in the players with the Revolution helmet. (Newsmax Health). Dan Polnerow, a journalist at Northeastern State University, wrote that Riddell s new helmet utilizes high density vinyl nitrile foam, a facemask designed to absorb some of the energy of the impact, and a larger shell to fit more padding (Polnerow). No helmet can completely protect an athlete from a concussion however providing better protection can substantially reduce the risk

Jimmy Cross In The Things They Carried

Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried is an interesting story that takes place during the Vietnam War. O Brien writes in third person omniscient and is only in the head of the main character; First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. In the story O Brien describes not only the physical baggage each soldier carries, but hints at the emotional baggage as well. With this, readers get to see exactly what goes on in the soldier s minds, but also Cross s mind and what kind of character he is. Throughout the story Cross confesses profusely about loving Martha, who in return doesn t see him as a lover but a friend. Martha is Cross s friend and crush who constantly writes to him. Because Cross is so infatuated with Martha, she clouds his mind almost 24/7. In the beginning of the story all Cross could think of is Martha, however because of this he... O Brien writes, He pictured Martha s smooth young face, thinking he loved her more than anything, more than his men, and now Ted Lavender was dead because he loved her so much and could not stop thinking about her (337 8). Because Cross is thinking of Martha he didn t realize that there was someone watching his squad, which causes the death of one of the members, Ted Lavender. With this readers can determine that Cross is not taking the danger of the war seriously, and is too caught up with his feelings for Martha, even though he knows that she doesn t feel the same way. This the start of Cross s change in character, and as a consequence Lavender was now dead, and this was something he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of the war (345). Cross realizes that the death of Lavender is on his hands because he wasn t serious enough, and would have to carry this death for the rest of war, and possibly his

Elizabeth Barret Browning Essay

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a plain woman of the Victorian Era that was most remarkably gifted. She was destined to become known to the world (Preston xi). Elizabeth Barrett Browning became known for her poetry, because she showed marriages were her women character were often left emotionally unstable. In her book Recollections, Browning describes what poetry means to herself. She explained that it became a distinct object with me; an object to read, think, and live for (Preston xii). Browning was described as a strong woman poet who had little to no training. She came from the Italian hills into a prim English feminine household, and inevitably assuming there that attitude of superiority to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Leighton describes Browning s expressions as fulsome and yet witty energy, which flirts and skirmishes with the inherited convection s of the love sonnet (106). The poem Casa Guidi Windows takes place in Italy and Leighton describes it as a discursive poem and addresses perfection and let downs of the Italian Risorgimento (106). The political poem shows Browning at her most passionately cosmopolitan, and as a poet (Leighton 106). This poem let the critics see that Browning was an accomplished poet. Along with her theme of love Browning showed in Casa Guidi Windows the intractable issues of papal power, British imperialism, and nationalistic mythologizing into a strong and musical poetry (Leighton 106).

The last great work of Browning s life was the poem Aurora Leigh . Oliphant believes the most amazing accomplishment in Aurora Leigh is it s energy and strong poetically vitality (1). While Browning was finishing this piece of work she was staying in the house of her cousin, John Kenyon.

John Kenyon died a few weeks after Browning dedicated Aurora Leigh to him. The death reflected upon the work of Aurora Leigh (Preston xvi). Browning also noted at the beginning of Aurora Leigh that the last pages have been finished under the hospitality of your [John] roof, my dearest cousin and friend , and many of the qualities of her cousin John can be found in the character of Romney (254). Patriotism by Yukio Mishima

Death, in many places death is feared, taking one s own life is looked upon as cowardly and weak. This story sheds a different light on death; it shows the honor and respectful way of bowing out. To see the honor in death, one must understand the culture and the time period. The story Patriotism written by Yukio Mishima shows a couple?s courage, love and faith as well as the man?s commitment to his country.

As the story goes, Shinji is a member of the Imperil forces. Shinji has taken an oath to fight for his country; his honor depends on his commitment. He will fight to death and risk his life whenever necessary to protect his livelihood. He s newly married and has even forsaken his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This part of the story shows how helpless women are in this society, and how dependant they are. This, as a continuing tradition, could drag Japan down in comparisons of equality and individuality.

In their last night together on this earth, Shinji and Rieko find faith, the truth and pure love. In their preparation for death Shinji places the ultimate trust in his wife, asking her to watch his death and then commit to her own. During this time the love for each other becomes pure and intoxicating. They both embrace their faith as they value the little time left with each other that ultimately turns into the death of two young and beautiful people. Whether or not they may have pure love, It seems that much is influenced because of their impending death, death in this case acts like a drug, a drug that makes them feel more than they would or should.

This story is very insightful into a different culture and its perceptions of death. It shows that commitment and faith can take precedence to life itself. I think this story is timeless and could be applied as a measuring tool for commitment and honor in most societies. Love brings two people together and then takes their lives. I think this story glamorizes and distorts the reality of suicide and death. It seems to say, ?This is OK? go ahead. I think people should live until, well they are dead and

The Star Crossed Walkman Lovers

The Star Crossed Walkman Lovers

True love is so rare, treasured, and ridiculed, that despite the fact that most people know that it is almost never found, they still are brave and desperate enough to try. While reading Romeo and Juliet, Eleanor commented, It was oh my God, he s so cute at first sight. If Shakespeare wanted you to believe they were in love, he wouldn t tell you in almost the very first scene that Romeo was hung up on Rosaline ... It s Shakespeare making fun of love (44). In Omaha, Nebraska, a love story sprouts between two misfits who fit perfectly with each other. It was 1986 when Park Sheridan and Eleanor Douglas first met. Both 16 year olds were the same, yet so different. Eleanor came from a broken family, while Park came from the complete opposite. They were bound together and torn apart by their love for each other. Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell brings to light that true love cannot be measured by the amount of time spent with the other person, but rather the ability of their love to withstand the lack of family acceptance, isolation, and societal influence. Ultimately, Eleanor and Park s romance was sweet and worthwhile only because of the difficulties they faced together. Despite the weariness of both Eleanor and Park s families about their newfound relationship, the two star crossed lovers persevered and were rewarded with a Romeo and Juliet style love, but without the deaths. Richie was Eleanor s verbally and physically abusive, pedophilic

The

History and Culture of Surfing

Surfing is an ancient art and was first known as he e nalu , which translates to wave sliding. However, surfing wasn t simply a fun sport or a task that these ancient people completed. Instead, it was something that attached them to the sea and they used it to reflect their emotions. During ancient times, surfers would often rely on priests, who were known as Kahunas, for prayers for good waves. Since proper waves are important when looking for a good day of surf, this was a crucial part of the process. Kahunas would dance and cite ritual chants, all in the hopes of pleasing the sea. It was the belief that this process would cause the sea to provide proper waves for the people to surf. Training Exercise

It is surprising to see how far the sport has come from its humble beginnings in Hawaii. Advertising for the sport made it even more popular and was first completed by Dale Velzy. Being the very first sponsor of surfing, he worked to make the sport more visible to everyone. It wasn t long after Velzy s endorsement that movies began to be made. The first surf movie was Gidget and The Endless Summer quickly followed. These movies created a surf culture that quickly swept the United States and the entire world. With this culture fashion, music and even a special language was created.

Eventually boards were shortened from 10 feet to 6 feet, which created a new form of surfing culture, referred to as the short board revolution . With this change in the culture, surfing went from somewhat of an underground interest to a mainstream, commercialized sensation. Surfing is still a beautiful and highly respected art. The Effect Of The Mouse And Gui On Society And Business

The

Affect of the Mouse and GUI on Society and Business

How the Mouse and GUI Enabled Other Technologies

The rapid proliferation of computers has made both our social and business world more and more convenient. Although the first modern significant kind of computer was introduced the world in the 1940s, the major event which has changed the history of human computer interaction was the advent of the graphical user interface at Xerox PARC in the 1970s. Along with a pointing device, typically a mouse, users are able to point to parts of the display. With the GUI which makes the interface to the computer primarily a visual medium, the virtual world inside the computer is portrayed graphically on the display. According to Shneiderman s the future of interactive systems and the emergence of direct manipulation [1] in 1982, he describes the GUI paradigm as direct manipulation , which is a breakthrough.

At the same time, under the influences of GUI and mouse development, multiple technology devices are showing up for the world to use and changing the way of doing things in both social and business life. For example, ATM systems are available for 24/7 banking, self check out systems are in many supermarkets and self check in systems are at airports in addition to online purchasing and home delivery available both major and niche retailers. Based on GUI, these systems have had a tremendous influence on modern business bringing convenience and efficiency to both customers and

Nores vs. Greek Essay

Nores vs. Greek

Greek mythology and Roman mythology are almost identical. This is an accepted fact, as it is widely known that the Romans stole the Greek myths. However, it is very interesting to note that the mythology of the Vikings (Norse) has many similarities with the Greek myths. These myths are, by no means, identical to the Greek ones (like the Roman ones are), but there are very distinct commonalities between the two. I see two possible reasons for this besides pure coincidence.

The first has to do with the fact that Norse myths were codified during the Viking era: 780 1070. This gives the Norsemen many centuries to become exposed to the Greek (or Roman) myths. The Vikings did travel as far east as the Caspian sea, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The gods and goddesses are powerful beings capable of super human powers, but nevertheless are characters fraught with very human frailties and flaws. In this way they created gods that had similarities with the common man in the society. This made the gods more tangible and easier to identify with. I think that this was necessary because they were not yet at the societal maturity level to have a single god on a cosmic plane. Most of the comparisons will be examining the similarities between major Greek and Norse gods, as well as creatures, stories and specific symbols which are featured in the mythologies. Some of the gods do not have direct counterparts (Thor, Athena and Loki). However, I will provide possible similarities within the respective mythologies.

ASGARD Asgard is sometimes known as Asgarth. It is the realm of the gods and the home of both the Aesir and Vanir. Is is ruled by Odin, the leader of the Norse deities. It is located in the heavens, but is connected to earth by a bridge, known as Bifrost, sometimes referred to as a rainbow. There is also a route from Asgard to the underworld, the domain of Hel. Valhalla, a hall within Asgard, was the palace for fallen kings, warriors who had died in battle and heroes.

MT. OLYMPUS Mount Olympus was the home of the Greek gods. It was chosen as their home because of its altitude, for Zeus, the king of the gods, was associated with the sky. Within the mythology, Mt. Olympus was large, foreboding

Founding Brothers Chapter Summary

In Founding Brothers, the three most important chapters that impact America today were The Duel, The Silence, and The Farewell and the least important was The Friendship. The book is about our seven founding brothers and about different events that happened to them in post revolutionary America. It is a nonfiction book that was written to show what they experienced and how they interacted with others. Chapter one, The Duel, is an important chapter in the Founding Brothers.Chapter one is about the duel between Alexander Hamiltonand Aaron Burr, who was the vice president to Thoman Jefferson. It took place in New Jersey in July of 1804. During the duel, Alexander Hamilton was shot and died the next day while Burr was only wounded. In the book while talking about Hamilton, it says, He also carried a military title, thus outranking Burr with his honorary designation as General Hamilton. During this time period, many men who became presidents had a military background and Hamilton s was better than Burr and he was the vice president. This is important because Alexander Hamilton could have became president or vice president and that could have changed the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Silence is about, the efforts made by some people to end slavery and efforts made by others to postpone the abolishing. Benjamin Franklin was one of the few people who believed slavery was immoral. He even signed a petition saying that slavery wasn t right and in the book it directly says the constitution empowered Congress to take whatever action it deemed necessary and proper to eliminate the stigma of traffic in human beings. Many other of our founding fathers still wanted slavery so when talk came up during the continental congress they avoided abolishing it. Without Franklin s strong desire to end slavery, who knows if more people would have felt that way in the future. Slaves could have been around much longer and maybe even

Project Scope Of Project Management

INTRODUCTION

The scope of a project is one of the most fundamental aspect of the planning development. In broad descriptions, it entails the objectives and requirements of the product. This concept is best defined in a document called Project Scope Statement. Project managers around the world have been successfully using this technique to provide an overall picture of the project. It is important to outline its usefulness in the project management business as it is a big factor of project success. The following essay will highlight the importance of creating a preliminary scope statement and briefly describe its processes and contents.

TOPIC 1 What is a Preliminary Scope Statement? What is its importance?

Project Scope Management is the systematic organization of all the tasks to be accomplished in a certain project and it controls how project scope will be implemented throughout the stakeholders project team. The scope statement acts as the core part of Project Scope Management and is one of the first to be completed in the planning process. According to the PMBOK Guide, a project scope statement is

The narrative description of the project scope, including major deliverables, project objectives, project assumptions, project constraints and statement of work, that provides a documented basis for making future project decisions and for confirming or developing a common understanding of project scope among the stake holders (PMBOK Guide 2004, p. 370)
