Alper Bozkurt Biography

You might think of bugs as pests, if you bother to think about them at all. Alper Bozkurt s research will quickly set you straight: to him, they re engineering wonders, deft flying and crawling machines, reproducing in nature more reliably than widgets in a factory. Bozkurt s interest isn t just academic. By the time he s through, in ten years or so, an army of cockroaches and moths just might save your life.

Bozkurt, an electrical engineer at the University of North Carolina, is the first of a kind: he tinkers with bugs. Much of the circuitry he works with already exists networks of neurons, honed by years of evolution with small electronic devices added on.

He envisions a future in which biobots bugs, with wires that protrude into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Take a second to move or maybe flap your arms. To accomplish that motion, your brain had to send an electric signal down the string of neurons in your spine and to the muscles in your shoulders and elbows, telling them to contract and then let go. In the moth, these brain to muscle signals flap its wings, and tilt its body left or right. If Bozkurt could send the right signals to the moth s neck, via the perfectly fused wires, he could theoretically drive the insect

After attaching a small helium balloon to the bugs to balance out the electronics weight, Bozkurt and Amit Lal, his PhD advisor at Cornell, discovered they really could fly the moth, as though its own brain were sending it signals on how to move.

We made it draw circles [in the air], says Bozkurt. Then we were able to bring the insect back down, all by sending the right pulses. There s no struggle the hack to the moth s motions is

Stefan Sagmeister Accomplishments

Stefan Sagmeister is a renowned contemporary graphic designer and typographer. Stefan Sagmeister is of course known for his work, but also the establishment of the famous design firm, Sagmeister Walsh. He is known for is risqué and interesting designs. Some of his most recognized designs can be seen on the album covers of OK go, The Rolling Stones, Pat Metheny, Lou Reed, Aerosmith and David Byrne. Stefan Sagmeister was born on August 6th, 1962 in Austria. Interestingly, upon graduating high school Sagmeister initially enrolled in an engineering college. However, Sagmeister changed his mind and instead began to invest in his earlier interests in graphic design that began when he was fifteen. When Sagmeister was fifteen, he worked for a left wing ... All over his body are details of a speech cut into his skin using an exact knife, an idea that came from the name of the speech, Cutting Away Modernism . This famous poster really helps to illustrate how polarized Sagmeister s work is in the eyes of the public. This poster is famous for drawing attention and causing a split between people loving or hating it. On one side, people believed this poster was an unconventional way of depicting a message. People thought this kind of design would negatively encourage others, and normalize self harm. However, others praised this project by Sagmeister. People thought this work truly showed the sacrifices Sagmeister would make in order to render the pain he was trying to emulate. Reflecting on this project, Sagmeister said, ...we tried to visualise the pain that seems to accompany most of our design projects. Our intern Martin cut all the type into my skin. Yes, it did hurt real

What Is The Difference Between Curie And Carrie Thomas

Richard Curie and Marie Thomas are two physicists from Newfoundland and Labrador. Curie is from Mt. Pearl, while Marie is from Dildo (please note that there is actually a town in Newfoundland and Labrador called Dildo). They both co wrote a paper on time travel three years ago. Their paper caught the attention theoretical physicist and cosmologist, Stephen Hawking! Curie, Thomas, and Hawking spent the next three years developing a time machine. It was such an honor to work with Stephen Hawking, Marie Thomas said. It s such a pleasure to speak with Mr. Hawking, Curie said. He is truly a visionary. He has so many ideas to improve human life. They called their time machine Tempus. The time machine creates wormholes, which links two points

Economic And Social Effects Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition

The history of America has been present by many explorers who discovered this massive land. All of the early explorers had a significant impact of American development. Two explorers, Lewis and Clark, are high on the list of significant explorers. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, which was also the Corps of Discovery, significantly impacted the economic, political, and social effects on the United States. Their immediate goal was to map the western side of American and set expansion. America s growth would have taken longer, been predicted by Thomas Jefferson, without the expedition s success. The political effects of the United States from the Expedition was drastic. The area where the expedition was being explored in was extremely close to the Spanish territories. A small part of the expedition was in the Spanish territory. The Corps was met with some uneasiness from the Spanish government as they thought the United States government was on the verge of attack. The Spanish released a small battalion of troops to intercept the Corps. However, the troops missed the Corps. The struggle of Indian relations was also another political issue. Since American land was formerly owned by the Indians, the Corps had to explain to the Indians that the land was no longer theirs. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

After western expedition the explorers realized how much land had to be settled. The land was large and also cheap in price and was eventually sold out for low prices. Sometimes the land was also given away. Eventually this caused a large influx of people to move into the land and begin a good living. More people had the chance to make their livings searching for gold thus beginning the Gold Rush. At this time, America was at its peak. The United States has more land as well as more natural resources. The resources include oil, steel, and wood would all be placed into growing a nation of

Information Gathering and Analysis Tools

It is important to have information gathering techniques so that no information can be overlooked. The information system that we are looking for must meet the requirements of the organization and the employees that will be using the system. The first part of information gathering should consist of identifying information sources. The main sources of information in the company should be employees who use the system and will be using the new one because they can tell you what works and what does not work or basically what s good about this system so that we can implement it in the new

Symbolism Of The Novel The Assault

Symbolism has a powerful effect on both the conscious and unconscious mind. Conspicuous symbolism engages the conscious mind, making one think about the many clever connections the author has made. Symbolism of the more subtle variety can have just as much of an effect on the reader; even though the reader may miss an intentional connection made by the author, they are likely to detect it subliminally. This can have a profound impact on the reader s understanding and impression of a work. In his novel the Assault, a novel about the consequences of a particular dramatic event that occurred during World War II where the main character s house was incinerated and all of his close family killed, Harry Mulischtakes advantage of this fact... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this scene, Anton serves as the contrary party to Truus. Because of the emphasis placed on his youth and naiveté, Anton contrasts strongly with the motherly wisdom of Truus. Anton strengthens Truus s assertion by commenting on the antithesis, But if that s the case, then... No one s ever at fault. Then everyone can just do as they please (33). Similarly at the end of the episode 2 when Anton entertains Fake Ploeg, Ploeg is introduced as having come in from the night from the chaos of a riot. This emphasizes his disorganized mind as he tries to explain to Anton the innocence of his father. However, he is unable to convince Anton because his origins seem to come from the darkness of the past, and because what he says is directly contrary to what Truus states earlier in the novel it is impossible for Fake s argument to be convincing to the reader. This is an example of how Mulisch is able to either support or discount arguments he presents by the symbolism associated with the character making it Mulisch uses references to darkness as well as small as seemingly unimportant details that reach in a conspicuous manner to impact the reader. The most important instance of this is the reference to the darkness within the neighboring houses, as the windows are closed and covered to avoid any confrontation with the Krauts. During the original description of the assault, nothing is revealed about what is happening within the neighboring houses. The only description

Analysis Of The Man Who Was Almost A Man

Richard Wright s The Man Who Was Almost a Man presents us with a character (Dave Saunders) who, like most teens, is dealing with emotional issues associated with a hormonal adolescent. This seems like a problem that most teens deal with. However, readers wanting to properly analyze this work should take the era, or setting, in to consideration. In the story Dave works on someone else s land and seem to also stay on that same property. Also, the vernacular in the story, and further detailed descriptions of the setting make it apparent that it takes place during Reconstruction (Neumann). This greatly impacts the story, it s characters, and the events that take place. Richard Wright makes it a point to make the races of the main... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of readers simply focusing their attention on the immaturity of the main characters actions, they should make themselves aware of the tense setting and apply that to their interpretation. Immaturity (Dave) From the very first paragraph of this story it is easy to view Dave s feelings as immature or insecure, especially given his age and relationship with his co workers. Dave even goes as far as to lie to his mother about his intentions in purchasing a gun, proceeds to hide it from her later, then takes it to work and accidental shoots a mule owned by the land owner. Though these do not seem like things a mature person would do perhaps Wright is showing the readers his characters desperate attempts to be taken serious in a society that could care less. Dave wants to feel he matters in the face of an environment that constantly tells him that he does not. After hearing Dave s explanation of what happened, his mother gets him to eventually tell the truth. Jim Hawkins makes a deal with Dave that he will work off the cost of the mule. Later Dave is in bed reflecting on the day s events when a thought occurs to him. He was glad that he had gotten out of killing the mule so easily, but he was hurt. Something hot seemed to turn over inside him each time he remember how they had laughed (Wright, 220). Readers may interpret this as teen rage, but the feel of hurt from Dave stem from issues with his economic status. In this era, many families

Service Learning At Fraser School

I participated in service learning at Fraser school in Richfield. Starting in September I helped out in a toddler age classroom every Thursday. Fraser school is a preschool setting for infants and toddlers. Besides getting the children kindergarten ready and offering a somewhat typical day of daycare/school, Fraser offers occupational, physical, and speech therapy. Some of the children have disabilities and some do not, Fraser is not discriminatory and they provide care for anyone. Some of the things I did in the classroom were prepare snack and lunch for the children, play games, participate in art projects, music, and reading, and play games with the children. The two teachers really appreciated my help, as I was provided an extra hand for them while they prepared daily activities. Playtime was usually hectic for the group and it needed to be closely monitored. I was also able to keep the children safe and keep a close eye on the total of twelve toddlers during playtime. My experiences at Fraser helped me understand many topics we talked about in our Intro to Sociology class. A few topics that stood out to me the most were the idea of social integration and many of the functions of the educationsystem, the three stages in the development of self, institutional discriminationwith minority and group divisions. Looking at the education system, a lot of things we talked about in class related to the Fraser school. Because Fraser school has a lot of children who have

The Causes Of Food-Borne Illness

This year, four million Canadians will be affected by a food borne illness, 11 600 will need hospitalization, and 238 of them will die (Thomas et al., 2015). Food borne illness refers to any illness caused by ingesting food or drink contaminated by microbes or toxic substances (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Moreover, the foodmarket offers a variety of products to meet customers expectations and this market must to ensure the food quality, especially when it is related to food safety. For years, dairy products, processed food and vegetables have been associated with recalls. In addition, the aliments should be free from pathogens because they may cause diseases, and some can lead to death. Bacteria such as E. coli, Listeria, Norovirus, Salmonella, Staphylococcus and Clostridium are cited as the most dangerous food pathogens able to cause significant harm to human health or even hospitalization (Thomas et al., 2015; Wang Salazar, 2016; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). For example, E.coli can contaminate multiple categories of food including dairy, meats, vegetables and processed food and cause significant health issues (Zwietering et al., 2016). Listeria is another pathogen that frequently appears in food poisoning outbreaks. Food contamination may occur at any stage of the food chain (harvesting, production, farming, storing) or even in people s homes. (Mani et al., 2017). With the advent of technology and the improvement of Microbiologytechniques, the detection of pathogens has been improving and ensuring new guidelines regarding hygiene, food conservation, and manufacturing process (Arpaia, 2017). By this, it has been vital to developing accurate and efficient methods to detect pathogens, supervise, and track the food processing chain. Due to the possibility the food contamination from the farm (harvesting or abattoir) to people s consumption (finished product and storage), the food production must be regulated to guarantee the quality of the nutrition (Arpaia, 2017). Therefore, the food producers and the distributors need to follow some rules to prevent food poisoning because this is an important threat to human health (Mani et al., 2017). For instance, in

In Elie Wiesel s 1986 Nobel Peace Prize Speech, Wiesel exclaims, ¨Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must at that moment become the center of the universe.¨ I defend Elie Wiesel s assertion, during tragedies civilians focus on the one tragedy at hand, wanting to intervene and solve. In the second and third lines of Wiesel s speech he claims, ¨We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim....Sometimes we must interfere.¨ The claim extends to show, civilians do not need to take sides, nor interfere. Tragedies are spread by word, then extend past national boards, which help countries take sides and interfere. After tragedies occur, news is spread among civilians of the country and around the globe. The use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

During WWII, the United States along with many other of countries on the Allies side, interfered with the crisis of Jewish concentration camps. In the book Night, an autobiography by Elie Wiesel, Wiesel explains his story from the latter part of WWII. Towards the end of the autobiography, Wiesel had a foot surgery which meant he was not to leave the camp after the evacuation. With Wiesel s father by his side, Elie Wiesel left Auschwitz to Buchenwald. Wiesel later found out, ¨After the war, I learned the fate of those who had remained at the infirmary. They were, quite simply, liberated by the Russians, two days after the evacuation¨(Wiesel 82). Even if Elie Wiesel could of been saved by the Russians earlier, Wiesel tretchured on and was not relieved until April 11, 1945 from Buchenwald. Wiesel states, ¨The battle did not last long. Around noon, everything was calm again. The SS had fled and the resistance had taken charge of the camp. At six o clock that afternoon, the first American tank stood at the gates of Buchenwald¨ (Wiesel

Emily Dickinson s Because I Could Not Stop for Death

Emily Dickinson s Because I could not stop for Death is a remarkable masterpiece that exercises thought between the known and the unknown. In Dickinson s poem, Because I could not stop Death, there is much impression in the tone, in symbols and in the use of imagery that over flow with creativity. One might undoubtedly agree to an eerie, haunting, if not frightening, tone and use of symbolism in Dickinson s poem.

Dickinson uses controlling adjectives slowly and passed to create a tone that seems rather placid. For example, We slowly drove He knew no Haste / ...We passed the School ... / We passed the Setting Sun (5,9,11,12), sets a slow, quiet, and clam... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first site We passed was the School, where children strove (9). Because it deals with an important symbol, the Ring this first scene is perhaps the most important. On this invited journey, one vividly sees Children playing. Laughing and singing. This scene conveys emotions and moods through verbal pictures.

The imagery in the final scene, We passed the Setting Sun (12) is very emotional. One can clearly picture a warm setting sun, perhaps, over a grassy horizon. The idea of a setting sun, aftermath a fact of slumber in a cold dark night. When Dickinson passed the Setting Sun, night drew nigh and it was time to go home and sleep. Symbolically, her tour of life was over; it was now time for Eternity death. While sight seeing in the carriage, one can gather, by the setting of the sun, that this ride was glimpse of life flashing before her eyes; just as said to happen before you die. Lines 14 and 15 seem to support this idea. The dews drew quivering and chill / For only Gossamer, my Gown (14 15). This indicates a pleasant time cut short. Before she knew it, the cold Dew[s] (14) had set in.

The imagery in this transcendent poem shines great light on some hidden similarities between life and death. This poem exercises both the thoughts and emotions of readers. Eternity and Death are two important characters in Dickinson s Because I could

Blaire provided a phone number for Matthew and I was able to contact him via telephone.

I contacted Matthew via telephone, Matthew stated that he did not answer Blaire s calls due to the decree issued by the judge requesting they only have contact via text message or Email in order to have any and all conversations documented (Blaire corroborated this statement). Matthew then stated he messed up the address and the correct address was 2088 Club Crest Way Henderson, NV 89014. Matthew then stated that he did not intentionally provide a false address and messed up, Matthew stated that he even messed up on his leave paperwork. Matthew emailed me a copy of his leave paperwork and it had 3838 Club Crest listed as the address. Matthew stated that he did not mean to mess up the address so bad and was extremely cooperative. I instructed Matthew to advise me when he arrived at the correct address and I would have the Henderson Police Department dispatch a unit to the address to verify he is there and that Nolen is in no danger, to which he agreed. I provided Matthew with the case number as well.

Officer Hemenway (P#2133) responded and verified Nolan was at the address with Matthew and was in no danger. Officer Hemenway then informed me Matthew had documentation,

Richard Joseph Daley

Richard Joseph Daley, the grandson of Irish immigrants, was born in the Bridgeport area of Chicago on May 15, 1902. He was graduated from De La Salle Institute in 1918 and worked in the stockyards for several years before studying law. While studying, he worked as a clerk in the Cook County Controller s office. In 1936 Daley married Eleanor Guilfoyle, and the couple had three daughters and four sons. One son, Richard M. Daley, served in the Illinois Senate and as CookCounty state s attorney before being elected mayor of Chicago in 1989.

Daley held several elected posts before becoming mayor. Although Daley remained popular and influential during his several terms, his administration was marred by a number of political scandals, by civil rights disturbances, and by a riot at the 1968 Democratic convention. Daley was among John F. Kennedy s key supporters in the 1960 presidential election, providing him with the delegates who helped him win a first ballot nomination and a massive Chicago vote that delivered Illinois for Kennedy in his narrow victory over Richard M. Nixon. Daley hosted the 1968 Democratic National Convention at President Lyndon B. Johnson s request. Daley s national reputation was seriously tarnished as the result of violence between anti Vietnam War demonstrators and Chicago police. Ironically, Daley had been a private critic of the Victnam War and had urged Johnson to withdraw U.S. forces. In 1972, Daley was dealt another blow when the Democratic National Convention refused to seat his Illinois delegation because of noncompliance with new selection rules. In 1976, Jimmy Carter said that Daley s endorsement clinched his first ballot nomination for the presidency, but Daley failed to deliver Illinois for Carter in the election. Controlling 30,000
