The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne and The Coquette; or, The History of Eliza Wharton by Hannah Webster Foster at first glance may seem to be entirely unrelated tales. The Scarlet Letter is the story of Hester Prynne, an adulteress who is forced to raise her daughter on her own and to wear a scarlet A to mark her indignity. The Coquette is a fictionalized account of a socially elite woman, Eliza Wharton, who dies after giving birth to a stillborn, illegitimate child. Although the fate and circumstances of each woman in these stories are on the opposite ends of the spectrum, at the core both comment on ideal womanhood, a woman s sexual freedom, and sin in a patriarchal society. Hester Prynne and Eliza Wharton go against society s

Literary Analysis Of Heaney s Death Of A Naturalist

The title of the poem Death of a Naturalist is very suggestive itself; the death of someone who loved nature. However, it is about an individual whose emotions fluctuates towards nature as they grow up. In the first stanza of the poem Heaney uses a range of literary devices such as imagery, green and heavy headed and warm thick slobber which gives the reader a concrete representation of an impression, a feeling, or an idea that Heaney is trying to portray; which is the freedom and carefree attitude that children have as they do not worry what others think of them and they only care about having fun . Heaney also tries to show the curiosity and the early education Miss Walls would tell us how the daddy frog was called a bullfrog .... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Death of a Naturalist . Blackberry Picking contains symbolism of ripening and rotting of blackberry which could be Heaney s way of suggesting youth and death, glossy purple clot could be viewed as youth as it suggests growth and seems almost seductive and rat grey fungus suggests decay, which is what happens after a person dies and their body is corrupted by soil and consumed by foul creatures. Blackberry Picking also consists of similes our palms as sticky as Bluebeard s which could be a euphemism for the guilt of greediness for the berries, the speaker s hands are sticky like Bluebeard . In the case of the poem, the boys hands are sticky with the juice of the berries, whereas Bluebeard s hands could presumably be sticky with the blood of his many wives. Growing up is shown as the feelings of guilt rises in the reader, children are unlikely to feel guilt because they do not have the advanced power of reasoning like adults do, so the realisation of the greed in the reader is significant as it shows signs of maturity. There are also elements of sexual awakening lust for picking shows connection with the sensual desires, this suggests puberty and discovery of reproduction, elements of longing,

Rhetorical Devices In Coriolanus

Despite having fallen several centuries ago, the Roman Empire continues to be one of the most celebrated ancient civilizations. From the rise and fall of Julius Caesar to the devastating destruction of Pompeii, Roman history continues to fascinate ( Ancient Rome ). Roman legends were so captivating that even in the early 17th century, playwrights like William Shakespeare explored their iconic use of a republic. In the Roman form of government, citizens elected tribunes into power and therefore had a say in the way the empire was run ( The Roman Republic ). However, despite this perceived empowerment of the common citizen, there was the constant question of whether or not the tribunes were truly representative of the people s interests. In the play Coriolanus, the tribunes use rhetorical devices to express their contempt of Coriolanus as well as to manipulate the Roman citizens for their selfish desires, despite their supposed role as the voice of the people. First, Brutus uses alliteration in the scenes between the tribunes to emphasize his disapproval of Coriolanus. When in private, both tribunes complain about Coriolanus, with Brutus declaring, Being moved, he will not spare to gird the gods (1.1.292). By describing Coriolanus as a man so proud he would insult the gods (thus belittling the most revered figures of Rome), Brutus expresses his low opinion of him. In the alliteration gird the gods , the hard g sound adds a harsher tone to Brutus s observation, which highlights his disdain for Coriolanus. The tribunes also make use of double entendre in their words to demonstrate their opinion of Coriolanus. In their conversations, Brutus exclaims, The present wars devour him! He is grown / Too proud to be so valiant (1.1.294 295), which can be interpreted in two ways. The first is that he is devoured, or brimming with pride due to the wars he won, making him more proud than he deserves. The use of the word devour also connotes a sense of power and desire, which again shows Brutus s attitude to the way Coriolanus accepts the glory he receives for winning wars. The second interpretation is that Brutus wishes for Coriolanus to be devoured by the current war, eagerly calling for his demise (Johnson

The Harlem Renaissance Movement

Sad Southern Literature

Southern Gothic Literature is exactly what it implies, works written in the south that are depressing, they are of isolation, violence, decline, bias, and brutality. These works use mental images and show a large amount of symbolism. This classification immediately gives any avid reader a mental author list. If naming an author were a quick answer game show quiz, William Faulkner would gain the number one position. Flannery O Connor, for myself, is not a name that comes to mind quickly but would have caused a gasp when named. Knowing a little more about a few of the writers helps create the list, for example, Rowan Oak sits hidden behind trees and is approached by a parallel line of trees staying in the darkness of shade with the servants quarters close behind. Faulkner s A Rose for Emily could have taken place in any small Delta town and any time, even today. A Rose for Emily is the sad tale of a typical southern woman who did not take the typical southern woman path. With the death of her father she did not follow the path of planning a funeral or telling family. The town was at a loss to find a way to handle this death. Just as they were about to resort to law and force, she broke down, and they buried her father quickly. This event alone characterizes the story with the isolation, the grotesque, and decay of her morals. Faulkner is just getting started with Emily but has given us the symbolism with society looking in on the aging home, unpaid taxes, and death. Next, we have the addition of Homer Barron, who has come to town temporarily for work. She is smiting for this tall dark handsome northerner. Faulkner himself does not hide another small hint about Homer not liking women. But things appear to be as though marriage is a possibility between the two and then that appears to be another blow that further isolates Emily. Eccentric Emily then ages with her black hair growing grayer and community curiosity growing over the decay foul smelling home. Days after her passing when members of the community enter the home we discover that Emily may have in fact been more southern lady saving

The Significance Of Mao Zedong s Leadership Essay

Part 1: Introduction

Overview

Over the course of Mao s leadership from 1949 until his death in 1976 we can see the significance of his leadership and what made him a good and bad leader. Mao had made some very good decisions to help certain groups but also made some very bad decisions that paid the price, in some cases killing millions. Due to the social and economic changes that then followed by a significant increase in the population and weak leadership that led to rebellions from 1911 that saw the end of 3500years of rule by the Chinese imperial dynasties. The social and economic chaos then led to the formation of two political parties. The CCP, led by Mao Zedongand the GMD led by Chiang Kai Shek. Mao and his party defeated the GMD in 1949 bringing Mao into power. Mao s main goal was to turn China into a pure communist country. Over the course of Mao s leadership he did this by making significant social, economic and political changes to the Chinese way of life. However due to his poor leadership and the faults that he made it caused people to oppose him and get in the way of his goal. That is why in 1966 Mao decided to assert his beliefs through a series of decisions, which came to be known as the Cultural Revolution. The Cultural Revolution was a hard time for many people throughout China as Mao enforced many things upon them to achieve his aim of removing capitalism. Mao used the youth of China to be that

Carl Sanders

a democrat or a republican he is speaking about the issues to everyone and by doing so his progressive ideas are being heard, through constitutive dialogue, which disrupts political discourse.

Theory

Bernie Sanders political discourse has catapulted him to one of the front runners of the 2016 presidential race. Sanders is bringing forth his thoughts and ideas that represent who he is. The representation precedes how Sanders wants to govern and transport his ideas into meaningful content. One of Sanders key rhetorical strategies has been to bring awareness to how capitalism and politics are intertwined and how this relationship impacts the American people. Friedrich Nietzsche s essay On Truthand Lying in a Non moral Sense provides a philosophical view on dissimulation and how societies act politically and socially. The task of dissimulation in society is to develop a belief that we re all part of a unity, but what looks like a unity can also be imaginary and full of deception. Capitalism was the answer to a democratic society, to be free of hierarchies that have been known as corrupt societies who provide for those in power and have the poor go without. The ideology of capitalism does have a way of being pure and truthful economically, but that can change with greed. Dissimulation by greed can create inequalities and can go unnoticed until the society as a whole feels the harmful effects. The content we receive becomes our truth, but it s all a

The Death Of Cleopatra

Cleopatra knew how to get what she wanted. She was considered a Mistress of disguise and costume. She could disguise herself to suit any occasion. With the help of Julius Caesar, Cleopatra regained Egypt s throne. She bore Caesar a son, but he was already married. She was forced to marry her brother Ptolemy. When Caesar died in 44 B.C., Cleopatra had Ptolemy killed so he wouldn t get in the way of her son s succession. She also had her sister, Arsinoe, killed to make sure her grip on the throne would be solid. Such acts were important features of ruling politics in Egypt. It was also necessary to keep her life and her son s. Since she had all threats removed, Cleopatra set out to become the ruler of Egypt. Though Cleopatra was Greek, she
