Human Impact On The Platte River

Since the settlement of the American West, rivers have experienced changes in the natural flows and movements. Among these processes flooding has become controlled as dams have been built. Esselman et al. (2011) tracked numerous categories of anthropocentric activities through geographical informational systems. The team found that upstream fish habitats were exponentially impacted by human activities downstream. In addition to the upstream movement of impacts human impacts also travel downstream. Different human impacts on the Yellowstone Riverversus the Platte River have greatly affected the river ecosystems. One example humans have impacted aquatic ecosystems has been through the introduction of invasive species. Invasive species are a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In another report by Kessler et al., (2013) the possibility of analyzing a variety of restoration methods will help to determine a cost effective plan. This means that the restoration of roosting and feeding grounds for the sandhill cranes can be achieved if numerous methods are first explored. In addition to exploring a variety of restoration methods the combination of public agencies and private individuals will promote restoration and conservation efforts. A restoration project along the Dolores River in southwestern Colorado and eastern Utah that combined the public and private sectors created a program that could share ideas, finances, and other vital planning decisions (Oppenheimer et al.,

Disadvantages Of Maritime English

Maritime English (ME) should not be taught from the initial stage of the learners. After learners have achieved a minimum level of proficiency, ME should be taught. Native as well non native learning approaches have to be adopted which means that the learners will learn the language not only at the institution but they have to develop it all throughout their life. Shen and Wang (2011) say that the traditional teachingmethods are not suitable for modern maritime needs. So, the learners are to be taught shipping terminologies, safety communication, and technical marine English with new innovative teaching methods. Along with the terminologies, the teachers have to present new vocabulary with illustrative materials like drawing or labeling... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The maritime English teachers have to teach locally but think globally (Trenker, 2010). Therefore, a global teaching approach as well as globalization of maritime institutions is needed. ME teachers should have abundant professional maritime knowledge, develop teaching skills and arrange training. They have to choose the textbooks which are related to the latest maritime technology and regulations. ME teachers have to meet the requirements as set by the STCW Convention (Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch Keeping for Seafarers) by developing good syllabi, classroom materials and adopting effective teaching approaches. Kourieos, Stella (2015) found that lectures were the least preffered means of instruction whereas classroom discussion is rated highest by the students. Therefore, more interactive pedagogical approach is needed to be adopted by the teachers. Speaking and writing skills should be incorporated into the curriculum. The teachers have to improve oral English teaching and bring authentic materials to the class. Certainly there are some challenges for the teachers. One challenge that teachers mostly encounter is to keep their teaching materials up to date. Finally, as learners use different strategies, the teachers have to focus on the learningstrategies, modify their teaching method and classroom materials from time to time. Learners age, gender, personality, motivation, self concept, life experience and other

Dr. Watson is the loyal sidekick of Sherlock Holmes. Helen Stoner is a frightened woman who has come to Sherlock Holmesfor assistance. Lastly, Dr. Roylott is Helen s stepfather who has gone to jail numerous times due to homicide and other criminal activities. The story takes place at Helen Stoner s house, Stoke Moran, in April 1883. It is initiated when Helen Stoner arrives at Sherlock Holmes house early in the morning; discussing how her sister Julia has mysteriously died. Sherlock decided Helen s difficult situation was a serious matter, and Sherlock made plans to inspect the house Julia died in. Dr. Roylott was tracking Helen down when she visited Sherlock, and threatened Holmes to stay away from her, increasing the suspicion of the mystery. Sherlock Holmes feels that Dr. Roylott could be at the center of the mystery, due to the fact that he is an aggressive, abusive, and violent man. After talking to Helen, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson travel over to Stoke Moran. In the beginning, Sherlock attempts to break through the locks, confirming an intruder could not possibly obtain access to the house during the night. Sherlock inquiries about the bed being clamped to the floor, along with the purpose of the bell in

Roman Religion During The Times Of Augustus Essay

ROMAN RELIGION http://death.wikia.com/wiki/Death_in_Ancient_Rome The Roman religion during the times of Augustus (c.27bc 14ad) the traditional religious practices revived by Augustus himself as a way to restore favour of the gods. He rebuilt temples and revived ceremonies. The ancient roman religion attained many of its rituals, superstitions, traditions, god and goddesses etc. from the influence of a range of sources in which they blended together to claim/adopt as their own religion. The romans practiced their religion less spiritually as they found their religious experience to be more of a bartering or business like relationship between the greater forces that had numina (spirit/power the gods) that they believed controlled the elements and all in which controlled their existence. Although they had this belief they did not believe that these forces created the world or the human form due to them depicting the gods behaving like humans and having a human like appearance. Due to them fearing the power of nature, as they could not understand the reasons to things such as environmental changes, believing it came from these beings of the elements helped put it into some sense.1 Due to this belief they did not seek any specific explanations. The relationship with these god s and goddesses was seen as more of a give and take relationship in which they bartered offerings which they believed pleased these gods so that in return they would be given what they asked.

Convolutional Networking Essay

2.1 Styling using Convolutional Neural Networks

The initial work on style transferring using convolutional neural networks was brought forth by Leon Gatys, Alexander Ecker and Matthias Bethge [1] in which style representations were extracted from images. This involved superimposing the style image onto the content image such that the semantic details of the content image were not lost as shown in Figure 1 [1].

Figure 1: Example of using the neural style transfer method advocated by Gatys et al to transfer the style of the reference photo onto the original photo such that the stylized photo contains the semantic content of the original photo and the style of the reference photo

2.2. Neural Style Transfer

Becattini et al [2] provide a thorough survey of neural style transfer literature. It highlights the contemporary problems of the existing models and also discusses future scope. It also presents various evaluation techniques to contrast outputs obtained through different neural style transfer methods. A broad classification of neural methods into descriptive and generative neural methods where the former is used to transfer styles by updating pixel information in the images whereas the latter optimizes a model and generates an image with varying styles in a single pass. Figure 3 provides a visually contrasting stylized image when a content image is stylized using both the mentioned methods.

Figure 3: (Starting from the left) a) content image b) style image c) Descriptive method results with brush size control d) Generative method without brush size control

The paper improves upon the existing methods mentioned above while being intent on process architecture preservation but improves on the performances by tweaking environmental parameters such as loss function modification, emphasizing on spatial arrangements to style details. Extensions to existing transfer methods which were developed for simple images were discussed, this included style transferring for doodles, head portraits, single user specified objects and video frames. The parameters mentioned in the paper were also broadly classified

The Paralysis of Prufrock in The Love Song of J. Alfred...

Paralysis, the incapability to act, has been a key element of many famous literary characters. Shakespeare s Hamlet is the paragon of paralysis, unable to sort through his thoughts, Hamlet only makes one decisive action, at the end of the play. T.S Elliot s transfers Hamlets paralysis in his poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. The name Elliot chose for this indecisive, timid man epitomizes his character as well as his flaws. J. Alfred Prufrock needs this ranting monologue in order for him to understand the severity of his paralysis and fear of women and society. Elliot s poetryis a melting pot of literary allusions and references. The first lines are directly quoted from Dante s Inferno. Prufrock, as can be interpreted from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the next stanza, Prufrock tells himself repeatedly that indeed there will be time. This repetition is used in order to display Prufrock re assuring himself that he does not need to meet the women in the room just yet, there will be time for himself and the woman he loves to meet and talk. Prufrock believes that there is enough time for his hundred of indecisions and revisions before the taking of a toast and tea. Not only does Prufrock seem to be afraid of confronting woman talking of Michelangelo, he seems intimidated by the social settings he must engage in. There will be time, there will be time, To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet, There will be time to murder and create, And time for all the works and days of hands That lift and drop a question on your plate (26 29)

Prufrock s social anxiety results in his worrying how others see him. He thinks about women s arms and perfume, but does not know how to act. He admits he is ultimately afraid (line 86) of engaging in social activities. Elliot reveals the height of Prufrock s paralysis by scrutinizing the absurdity of Prufrock s concerns: Should I, after tea and cakes and ices, / Have the strength to force the moment to its crisis? In the next few stanzas, Prufrock describes himself balding, middle aged, and plain in order to draw in the reader to the point of view of the society. As detailed as Prufrock scrutinizes his physical appearance, he feels the

Is College Really Free Essay

Is anything in life really free? If college is free, what is the point of trying to work hard and to try to go above beyond? Free tuition colleges could make college seem less important (Lobosco). It would make it seem less important because if a student fail one year the student will not have to pay for the next year or the year after that. The students could just keep failing. The reasons behind why college tuition should not be free is because of how taxes would be raised, how it would still not be completely free, and how scholarships can help make it free. First of all, it is not actually free someone has to pay for it. If there were did have free tuition colleges, the state and federal government would have to make a few changes. The changes could include raising taxes, decreasing military budget, closing tax loopholes, increasing taxes more for the wealthy, new taxes on speculative Wall Street transactions, and diverting student financial aid to tuition free colleges (Should College Be Free? Pros, Cons, and Alternatives). It would affect the taxpayers of America the most, because they would have to be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even if it would help to get rid of the shackles of student debt, having free tuition colleges would deprive the students of things like learning how to balance their finances, which can lead to big problems in the future (Suvannasankha). Having free tuition colleges could affect America in many ways, some good and some bad. One good thing that free college tuition would do for America is that it would bring a new skillful and better educated workforce (Should College Be Free? Pros, Cons, and Alternatives). Even though having free college tuition would help America would having free college tuition be the best idea depending on the fact that nothing is really free, everything comes at a

To Life Essay

To Life Everyone knows that in order to truly appreciate something sometimes you have to do without. I think that this can be related to my Catholic faith and studying about the Jewish faith. After reading the book, To Life , I value my faith that I have much more. It has also helped me to appreciate the Jewish faith. Lastly, it has enlightened my mind with appreciation for the Jewish faith and how it has been a building block for our faith. First of all, the Jewish people have a strong belief in community. On page ten it is quoted, people before we had a religion. To the Jews this is a very important part of their religion. By following the traditions of their ancestors (Moses, Isaac, Jacob) they believe that they will fulfill... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, for Jews, they have a higher reason. Keeping the rules of kosher allows the Jews to make eating a holy thing. Allowing God to be part of their meals! It states, The fact is that the rules of keeping kosher have nothing to do with trichinosis or contamination. They have everything to do with taking the process of eating which we share with all other animals and making it a uniquely human activity by investing it with considered ones of permitted and forbidden. Jews also believe that our moral choices we make in our life need to be handled with much maturity and responsibility. As regards to sexual pleasure the Jews have strict laws to this. On page fifty three Kushner describes Jews having three different ways to react to sexual pleasures or any pleasures. We can yield to our instincts like animals do, suppress them or sanctify them. The Jews sanctify their instincts by keeping sex only for marriage and for the purpose of procreation. A last main belief can be found on page sixty seven of Jews is that called tzedaka or in English charity. Christians believe that giving is not just the material sense of giving, but giving when it hurts. Christians believe that it doesn t matter how much you give as long as you are giving a generous gift. The Jews believe in tzedaka meaning giving as much money as you can and the more money you give the better and holier you are! Prayer is the last

BA1b Reflective Journal Reflective Journal

Within this reflective journal I intend to analyse my work within the unit BA1b. I started this unit inspired to improve as much as possible.

The first task was to create a sequential film. The idea of this incredibly daunting as I had next to no experience with filming or editing. After practicing with the filming and editing using cameras and Adobe Premier in an induction , I still didn t feel very confident. This is where I got the idea for stop motion from. I made good use of primary and secondary research by experimenting with stop motion, observational drawing, historical information and taking photographs. This helped me really understand the subject I was focusing on. Along side making this film we had lectures and workshops on various subjects such as colour, the use of colour became such a strong element in my work throughout the year. Mainly using colour as an emotive language by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was very pleased with the narrative, I chose a relatively innovative way of showing this as it was telling the story in a more abstract way, which is a change from how I usually work. It was interesting to start experimenting with different media outside of workshops.

The second project allowed me to create a publication which was something I as incredibly exited to do. My book was based on the timeline of a currently abandoned house. I feel I worked effectively in this project but set too much work for myself as each of the illustrations were incredibly time consuming. I have noticed throughout these projects it takes me a while to get stuck in as I m very slow with ideas development, I usually think of more effective ideas when I am half way

Online Dating Analysis

Another aspect that social media drives is that of the human condition; one interesting phenomena that has developed has been online dating. Although one would hope that people are still meeting and developing relationships the old fashioned way that being meeting face to face, online dating now represents (Beck 2013). In fact, in 2013, 23% of all people that meet online will get married (1). The author establishes that the number is expected to continue to grow as more people spend time online rather than in a live social setting. It could be argued that in the absence of people meeting in settings conducive to intermingling, those who were shy or seeking a specific type of person would use a dating service. To a certain extent, there is direct connectivity to having faith in a third party to match people. Although afraid to engage the social network as a way of meeting a partner because of the fear of the unknown, in reality it could be suggested that meeting someone through a dating service also did not present that much more security (1).

The negative side of social engagement through the Internet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many researchers argue that social media provides a cloak by which people can hide behind. In other instances, the Internet has established a place for those who fear interacting in the real world. They can now safely communicate and build relationships. The topic of cloaking is interesting because prior to the internet, people had to venture out into the world and had to communicate live with people, the process developed social skills that are threatening to be lost as social networking continues to grow. At the forefront is the notion that social media as well as personal electronics is killing communication (Tardanico 2012). The author reflecting on an incident that occurred between a friend and her daughter and
