My First Day Of College Essay

My first day of college was kind of a blur but it was most certainly a very important one. I spent my first semester of college at Central Michigan University, I arrived on the Friday before classes started which is commonly known as Welcome Weekend around campus. Coming into it I really didn t know what to expect from college, I was really nervous about meeting my roommates and having to communicate with them. I had been friends with the same 6 people for the past 5 years and moving on into a new environment where I knew no one was pretty daunting. I live in Livonia Michigan it s about 20 minutes out from Detroit, CMU is in Mount Pleasant just over 2 hours away. I was so sad to leave my friends that day I basically slept the whole way to Mount Pleasant just so I wouldn t cry. When I arrived my parents and I along with some help from the student volunteers unpacked my aunts minivan and moved into my home for next 9 months. I was the first to arrive so I obviously chose the biggest room, I stayed in Trout hall on the north side of campus. The way they had it set was 4 roommates in one dorm, each dorm had 2 bed roomsand 1 bathroom as well as a common room. Different dorm halls had different rooming methods but the one Trout used was pretty common on campus. Once I was all moved in and unpacked my parents went out to grab me some groceries, I used this time to catch up with my friend Nick.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rest of the year came with a ton of great moments but none have really stuck with me the way my first day did. It s like real life came at me all at once and the only thing I could do was sit there and take it all in, now when I look back on it I can trace tat day to so many other significant decisions I made that year, not only that year but all throughout college as well. It may not have gone exactly as planned but it was certain worth the

How Did Martin Luther Influence The World

In 1483, Martin Luther was born in Saxony, Germany, it was a place far from the intellectual and cultural influence. However, Martin was a lawyer and he was aware of the failure of Europe s religions, like the Catholic system of earning salvation. Martin was afraid of God and this gave him no peace. One day, as he was walking home, it started to rain tremendously and he prayed to Godto keep him safe. He prayed if He kept him safe that he would become a monk and quit law school to study the gospels. He Eventually made it safe and he was fearful of God so he later quit law school and started to study and became a monk. Martin was always confessing to the priest at church because he wanted peace in his heart. But this made him feel empty inside,

Valley Forge Research Paper

valley Forge was named for an iron forge on Valley Creek in Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania. It was not the best place to set up winter camp for the Continental Army, as it was unable to defend southern Pennsylvania at the time. This location also left the vulnerable under supplied army in striking distance of the British, who were well provisioned and secured in Philadelphia. The area was close enough to the British to keep their raiding and foraging parties out of the interior of Pennsylvania, yet far enough away to halt the threat of British surprise attacks. Several locations were considered, but Washington selected Valley Forge , Pennsylvania, 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The densely forested plateau of Mount Joy and the adjoining

A Rose For Emily Narrator Essay

Narration can be used to manipulate a story. The author chooses who and how a story is told. It can manipulate the reader s views of characters and situations in the story. The point of view that A Rose for Emily was written in was third person. It served as a collective town voice and let the reader in on the thoughts and opinions the townspeople had on Miss Emily. This type of narration can be used to detach a reader from the story or characters, but in Faulkner s case he wrote it in a way that the narratoris slowly pushing us to feel empathy for Miss Emily. The narrator is an unidentified voice that seems to work as a collective voice for the townspeople. The narrator is unbiased and gives out the town gossip with no side note on his/her thoughts. The reader can then take the information and do with it what they please. The unbiased thoughts can bring us closer to Miss Emily. They let us hear her story from an outsider s view and we as readers are making up our own thoughts and opinions on Miss Emily as we read through the flashbacks of the story. The narrator conveys his/her disgust in the way they look at Miss Emily through the opening line of the story. The men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen... In A Rose for Emily Faulkner writes, So the next day we all said, She will kill herself. We had said, She will marry him. Then we said, She will persuade him yet. . [35] I see that the way the narrator presents the information he or she does not side with the gossip all the time. Seeing that can make us as readers feel empathy for Miss Emily. Having rumors and gossip sent around about yourself could be quite upsetting, and for that we feel compassion for Miss Emily, just like the Narrator

Children s Miracle Networks By Marie Osmond, John...

In 1983, Osmond Studios in Utah aired a Telethon resulting in $4.8 million raised for 22 children s hospitals. This fundraiser led to the formation of the Children s Miracle Networks by Marie Osmond, John Schneider, Joe Lake and Mick Shannon (About Us, 2016). CMN s partnership with corporations, celebrities and individuals displays positive public relations and tactics by which other non profits can model. General Background

Children s Miracle Network, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, was formed in 1983 by Marie Osmond , John Schneider, Mick Shannon and Joe Lake as what started out as a Telethon. The company then quickly expanded into a major non profit organization. Throughout the late 20th century, CMN employed multiple fundraising tactics and acquired various corporate and celebrity sponsors (About Us, 2016). Since 1983, CMN has raised over $5 billion to aid over 170 children s hospitals, support research, help families financially and generate awareness (Financials, 2016). CMN governance consist of President and CEO John Lauck, a 17 member board, and 155 paid staff members (Charity Report Children s Miracle Network, 2016). In 2014, employment costs totaled $16,882,159 (Audit, 2014). As defined in CMN s 2014 audit, partnering hospitals (170 hospitals as of 2016) must pay a membership fee and license in order to participate in fundraising and awareness campaigns. Funds raised become unrestricted, however the hospital becomes CMN s sole licensee.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Standardized Writing System

Writing has constituted an important practice in human culture since the earliest forms of writing were discovered from cave paintings made 40,000 years ago. Writing enables writers to express themselves in a writing system that conveys unique features of its associated culture. In this context, writing means a standardized system for recording, in a specific language, content ranging from values to ideas to poems, etc. Humans have communicated in thousands of languages throughout history and consequently devised numerous different writing systems for expressing those languages. To facilitate easier communication, it has sometimes been suggested that the world adopt a single writing systemcapable of representing all languages. This essay... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is an over optimistic and naïve argument, however, for at least three reasons. Most particularly, a standardized writing system might seem ideal, but it cannot overcome the enormous difficulties brought about by requiring the world s citizens to learn a new writing system. This is because learning writing systems is very challenging, laborious and time consuming (Tzeng Wang, 1983); this is even more the case for adult learners, who might anyway see little benefit and much disadvantage from the additional financial expense of learning a new writing system when they are already expert users of their written language. A second reason why a universal writing system is ill advised is because languages are living things that evolve slowly over time; there never can be a standard writing system while cultures are continually developing new forms of expression. This can be seen from the fact that the Chinese writing system has already undergone several evolutions over the centuries. Thirdly, the argument for standardizing a writing system is naïve because it entails controversial political decisions. No doubt the powerful nations of the East would prefer a logographic or a syllabic writing system while their Western counterparts would prefer an alphabetic writing system. Each side would therefore favour its existing writing system to minimize disruption and to ensure forms of cultural hegemony. Taken together, these three arguments demonstrate the impracticality of a universal writing system and highlight the difficulties such a system would
