I chose pharmacy as a career because of the passion I have towards medicine and helping others. I vision being able to create the drugs needed to save others and researching new drugs to end current diseases as my ideal future. It is a career I respect and stems from my obsession with nutrition and healthy living. This obsession with living a healthy lifestyle resulted from my wrestling career as I always tried to be at my absolute physical peak for competitions. Knowing what I eat and regulating the amount eventually lead to being fascinated by the drugs I took to heal my various injuries (such as ringworm, sprained ankles, and damaged knees). One lab dealt with TB drug analysis in patient strip plasma using HLPC systems and an extraction method assay. The other lab focused on gene therapy with somatostatin in kindled rats to see if it has a therapeutic effect on seizures. These two labs showed me just how vastly different pharmacy careers can be when compared to the traditional clinical or retail pharmacist. That is one of the main draws to pharmacy that intrigues me, the sheer quantity of career options available. I want a career with branching options that hold their own little world, yet still remains connected to each other. It is a career where I set all of my drive on and I know it will help me grow more. Albert Einstein once stated, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile", and I sincerely deem this to be true. A little over a year ago; I interviewed at The University of Saint Joseph School of Pharmacy. During this interview, I was asked to recall a time where I had made a difference. I stated that we always make a difference, every day, but remember that I did not mention a specific moment. Although I have helped many patients since starting my career in pharmacy, for some odd reason, I could not come up with an exact moment where I felt I had truly made a difference– until a few months ago.

Since my interview at USJ, I have continued to expand on my knowledge and career in pharmacy. I obtained a promotion at Yale New Haven's new specialty pharmacy, Outpatient Pharmacy Services at YNHHS, as a Specialty Pharmacy Liaison within the Oncology division. A qualified pharmacist must go through a certain amount and type of schooling to obtain certain degrees; these degrees will make an individual eligible to become a qualified pharmacist. Students do not have to complete a formal pre–pharmacy program but they must have certain pre–requisites such as general biology, physics, and chemistry with labs. They must also be educated in areas such as math, humanities, communication, and writing skills. Once a student is enrolled in a pharmacy school they must complete at least two years of pre–pharmacy courses in college, graduate from a four–year pharmacy program, complete an internship; and pass a state licensing exam. These programs teach students to fill prescriptions, advise patients, and confer with physicians and other health workers. Once a student has gone through all of the schooling they will receive certain degrees. Throughout the course of my first semester in the pre–pharmacy program, I participated in a class called Introduction to the Pharmacy Profession. The purpose of the class was to establish general knowledge about the job of pharmacists and to assist the students with their future plans. The class introduced many guest speakers who have jobs in all different areas of pharmacy. Before listening to each speaker in class, the students were asked to write three questions about each specific job based on the required reading from the APhA Career Pathways Program. The students also participated in Common Read Events to broaden their knowledge about diversity. After completing the APhA Career Pathway exercises, I received a total of ten careers that matched my responses. Five of the pharmacy careers were based off my answers to the forty–five questions in the program exercises. These careers include outpatient health system pharmacy, ambulatory care, mail service pharmacy, home health care pharmacy, and community health center. The other five pharmacy careers were based off the factors that I marked as the most important critical factors to my life. Professionalism within health care includes values to promote the good of every patient in a compassionate, caring and respectful manner. In the article, "At the Pharmacy," Chekhov instructs pharmacists as to what they should not do in regards to lack of empathy, attention, and interaction towards the patient, which ultimately leads to the deterioration of the patient's health. In fact, the pharmacist should be concerned about the patient's worries, and create an environment where care, trust, and effective communication is used to address the patient's concerns, as well as ensure the efficient delivery of prescriptions. Without this field, the balance in the medical community would be disrupted due to patients not receiving their medication to sustain their life. Although this career may seem easy, there are important characteristics one must hold in order to be a successful pharmacist. Communication is an important skill that every health professional should have, specifically pharmacists. As a pharmacist to be, it is important to practice constantly to improve this skill in order to properly transmit information to a patient, because if the proper information is not transfer patients wellbeing might become compromised. Because of this importance, the Foundations of Pharmacy Practice course has its mission to prepare us as much as possible to develop this skill, and one way it achieves it is through performance based assessments. The first performance assessment experience consisted on two main parts, a simulated patient encounter where I had to obtain a medication history and counsel the patient on an assigned drug. The second part was based on our ability to interpret a compoundable drug prescription. As I reflect on my experience of a pharmacy practice, I realize how much of my personality has changed in only few months. The experiences I gained during my first rotation at Walgreens were particularly rewarding, especially those gained while working as a team to achieve a common goal of a patient's well–being. I did not have any previous experience in the pharmacy setting, therefore I was determined to take advantage of this opportunity to grow and develop skills that are vital to be a good pharmacist. As I reflect back on my pharmacy career exploration beginning from my career project in pharmacy to other researches made, they all centered around pharmacy specialties specifically, nuclear pharmacy and specialty pharmacy. About two thirds of all students enrolled in pharmacy technician programs are also enrolled in Pharm.D. (Doctor of Pharmacy) programs. This program usually takes four years to complete. Students will need at least two years in college before they can be accepted into a pharmacy program, but most students have three. I feel that Pharmacy is a challenging yet rewarding career that makes a positive impact on the lives of individuals. My A–levels have provided me with a range of useful skills that I will be able to apply within a Pharmacy degree.

Studying A–level Chemistry has improved my ability to carry out safe lab practices, accurate and reliable tests and data analysis by conducting practicals. Wet granulation In wet granulation, excipient powder (without the lubricant) is mixed with the API, and using appropriate granulator (oscillating granulator, high–shear granulators, Fluidized–bed granulator or by extrusion) granules are produced. After that granules are dried and milled then mixed with the lubricant and further compressed into tablet.

Advantages

Powder segregation is less common

Suitable for tablets containing low concentration of API

Use conventional excipients

Low dust production and lower risk of cross–contamination

Improves powder density homogeneity

Improves the flow of powders by making it more spherical and increasing particle size

Produced tablets can undergo post–processing unit operations, e.g. tablet–coating

Disadvantages

Require multiple steps of which powder loss could occur during different stages

Expensive

Requires the use of solvents that may: o Be unsuitable for different API's (moist–sensitive), o Solubilzes the API o Lead to API degradation

As heat is used to remove solvents, degradation of thermo–labile API could occur
