Niccolo Machiavelli was born on May 3, 1469, in Florence, Italy. The Prince was written in 1513 but was published five years after Machiavelli's death in 1527. Machiavelli wrote the Prince as advice to Lorenzo de' Medici and as a plea for his position back in the Medici Florentine government. Machiavelli gives great advice on what a Prince should do in order to keep a country under his rule, but his main ideas are that a Prince should not be liked or loved by his people but feared and never hated and that a ruler should be willing to do everything in his powers to keep his kingdom stable, even if that means he needs to lie and get a little violent. When reading The Prince readers can see the ways it is reflected in today's modern society....show more content...

Back in Machiavelli's time politicians lied so they could get the votes of others, "Of this endless modern examples could be given, showing how many treaties and engagements have been made void and of no effect through the faithlessness of princes." (Machiavelli, 137–138) Many Presidential candidates need votes to actually become President, and to get votes they need people, people are not willing to give their votes willingly, they need a good reason as to why they should vote for that person. As a result the Presidential candidates need to make up reason like giving better healthcare benefits, tax reductions, and helping create more jobs they make the people believe them so they vote for that political candidate. When they actually become President they will have more important things to think about (mainly war going on in other countries) to even consider what they think is the little subjects. Lying is apart of human nature everybody does it, even in Machiavelli's

Niccolo Machiavelli

Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince examines the nature of power and his views of power are still somewhat in existence today. I'll discuss this in this essay, emphasizing the following theses. Machiavelli discusses power over the people, dictatorial power, and power with people, shared power. While it is possible for power with to attain greater prevalence in society, it will not completely eliminate power over. In The Prince, Machiavelli discusses two distinct groups of people, the political elite, including nobles and other princes, and the general public. Today in the United States, the first group, the political elite, includes political leaders, religious leaders, business leaders and the leaders of...show more content...

While Machiavelli emphasizes power over in relations between the political elite, he discusses a different kind of power in the relations between a prince and the general public. Machiavelli notes that a prince can share power with the people, since a prince can trust the people much more than he can trust the nobles. Nobles "can not be satisfied if a ruler acts honorably but the people can be thus satisfies, because their aims are more honorable than those of the nobles are: for the latter only want to oppress and the former only want to avoid being oppressed" (p.35). The people are not unforgiving and greedy so the prince can place more trust in the people. Since the public can be trusted, the prince can empower the people. An empowered public will protect the ruler rather than overthrow him. Machiavelli suggests providing people with power in terms of arms, since "when you arm them, these weapons become your own" (p. 72). In this way power is an increasing resource, sharing power with the people can result in greater power for the people and for the prince.

Finally Machiavelli notes that inherent power of the public, which exists despite the dictatorial power that any prince exercises. When discussing fortresses, he states that "the best fortress a ruler can have is not to be hated by the people, for if you possess fortresses

Machiavelli The Prince Rhetorical Analysis
Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince

Niccolo Machiavelli is revered as the founder of modern political philosophy. He was considered a "realist" because he concerned himself only with the political situations that actually arose in reality, where as previous philosophers were concerned largely with the theoretical politics of an "idealist" perfect society. In Machiavellis' The Prince, written to the ruler ofFlorence at the time, Lorenzo de' Medici, he analyzes the characteristics of numerous past rulers. In doing so, Machiavelli presents Medici with a sort of guidebook of successful political practices. Machiavelli goes against Platonic philosophy. Whereas Plato believed that human kind was virtuous by nature, with...show more content... Machiavelli begins by saying that the most difficult thing for a ruler to do is to acquire a new kingdom. This may be accomplished one of two ways, "either by the arms of others or by one's own, either by fortune or virtue." What he means by the "arms of others" and "fortune" is monarchs that inherit their kingdoms. When Machiavelli refers to using one's own arms or "virtue," he is in fact equating virtue with force. By advocating the use of force, Machiavelli became the first political thinker to suggest power politics.

According to Machiavelli, acquiring a kingdom by force is perfectly all right, because the desired end justifies any means necessary to achieve it. He does however instruct Medici as to "the good and bad use of cruelties." By this, Machiavelli is referring to both the effective and non–effective uses of force. Machiavelli states that "Good use is when…is when they [acts of cruelty] are perpetrated all at once…and subsequently not repeated." Much like the reign or terror instituted by C. Marius in the late Roman republic or the killing of the Russian royal family during the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Machiavelli advocated the swift use of blatant force to kill off the opposition as well as to strike fear into the hearts of the masses. Over time the ruler may make the use of his force less often, thus giving him the appearance of being kind. Machiavelli goes on to say that the bad use of cruelty is when they

Machiavelli himself once said, "At an early age, I learned how to scrimp rather than to thrive" (King 3). This meant that Machiavelli was not born into wealth and instead of being given everything he wanted; he had to work for it.

Machiavelli's father provided him with a rather sufficient education in religion, classics, and politics. His father loved books. In fact, they had a library where he collected works by Greek and Roman philosophers such as Cicero and Aristotle (Wagner 17). He also collected major studies of Italian history. The books that his father collected provided NiccolГі with a foundation of knowledge about the ideas of noble Greek and Roman thinkers (Wagner 17). These books would also help shape NiccolГі's own writings decades later. When Machiavelli grew a little older, he studied at The Studio, which was essentially a school. The Studio gave Machiavelli a solid grounding in rhetoric, grammar, poetry, history, and moral philosophy (King 7). Three days after his 17th birthday, Machiavelli began learning the elements of Latin under the Supervision of a local teacher known as Maestro Matteo, who conducted lessons from a house near the Ponte Santa Trinitia (King 6).

Machiavelli desired and had a talent for government work ever since childhood. His intelligence and passionate political interests were powerful reasons for the attention from Florentine politicians. For this reason, he was once known as "Machia," a pun on Get

The Prince by NiccolГІ Machiavelli was written in the year 1513 A.C.E. in Italy during a time in which his views were greatly detested by others. They were so hated that he was exiled from his own country for writing them. When hearing this, one must ask oneself, what kinds of views did Machiavelli have so that his own country would cast him out? His ideas, though written very complexly, were very simple. One must gain success and to do so, any means were justifiable. He wrote his ideas in a lengthy letter to prince of Italy, Lorenzo de' Medici. He gave him advice that was supported by history and what he thought were the precise makings of an excellent leader. That advice was both excellent and awful....show more content...

This is conveyed by his giving methods to simply gain power; and crimes and evil along the way are okay, as long as one indeed does gain power (Machiavelli, 279). The ideas that are portrayed by Machiavelli inThe Prince can be thought of as the perfect ways to gain success. Machiavelli even supports all of his given qualities with a great leader in history who has become great due to that characteristic. When Machiavelli explains how a prince must know how to wage war, he gives a great example of a military leader who overthrew the government of Milan in 1450 and went on to become its duke (Machiavelli, 280). Machiavelli also explains that is very wise to follow great leaders of the past. He points out that it is said that Alexander the Great followed the path of Achilles, Caesar followed Alexander, and Scipio followed Cyrus. According to Machiavelli, " . . . Essay on The Prince

NiccolГІ Machiavelli is representative of Renaissance thinkers in his perception of government. No longer was government seen as an institution granted by God but rather governments were largely becoming arrangements or contracts between those that govern and the governed. Thinkers from Aristotle to Francis Bacon would expound on this idea of a social contract, but none would exemplify the realism and ruthlessness of modern politics like Machiavelli. While the word Machiavellian has become part of our lexicon as a term for the ruthless execution of political will glorifying the "ends justify the means" mentality, Machiavelli's true legacy should be found in his belief that the state was more than a contract as Bacon or John Locke...show more content...

"Machiavelli viewed all turmoil as a result of an irremediable and tragic conflict between man's limitless cupidity and the limited possibilities for its satisfaction." Since this conflict persisted throughout human history, the state plays a pivotal role in rectifying this scenario. Machiavelli outlines his ideas in his seminal work The Prince. In this work Machiavelli dissects the history of ancient Rome and Greece to better understand and comprehend the politics of his era. The Prince is guidebook and political treatise designed to help any prince or republican government best fulfill its role as "disciplinarian of 'evil' man." To do this Machiavelli: [j]ustifies the book by showing that politics is a science from which men can learn, not just a learned recreation to be indulged in while Fortune dictates what is done; Fortune, he emphasizes, can, and must, be made to serve the deft and resolute prince. It was written to satisfy a need, but the impulse was personal rather than a specific political one. Throughout his work, Machiavelli exemplifies realist politics in their most basic and ruthless form. It is these judgments that allow the enlightened prince to govern effectively and maintain order within his state. By authoring The Prince and using it as a platform to emphasize his particular brand of politics, Machiavelli breaks new ground and by advising the reader to govern based on cold

According to legend, just before his death, Niccolo Machiavelli told his friends that had remained faithful to him up until the very end about a dream he had had. In his dream, he had seen a group of peasants, wretched and decrepit in appearance. He asked them who they were. They replied, 'We are the saintly and the blessed; we are on our way to heaven.' Then he saw a crowd of formally attired men, aristocratic and grim in appearance, speaking solemnly of important political matters. Again, he asked them who they were and where they were going. 'We are the damned of Hell' was their answer. Machiavelli later remarked that he would be far happier in Hell. This story was from Viroli's Niccolo's Smile ("The Mask and The Face"). At the end of the chapter, Machiavelli explains how both are good qualities for a leader to have as long as they are balanced. Similar to 1916 when The Prince was written, those qualities of a good leader can still be applied years later and even today. Machiavelli, although thought to be, is not against religion. Machiavelli believes religion is a great unifier. A fact many have overlooked in his philosophy. Also it seems there is a hint of belief or acknowledgement in God in his passage "Although one should not reason about Moses, since he merely executed what God Commanded, yet he must be praised for the grace that made him worthy of speaking with God. But let us consider Cyrus and the others who acquired great kingdoms: they were all praiseworthy, and their actions and institutions, when examined, do not seem to differ from Moses, who had such a mighty teacher." This quote too could be Machiavelli simply covering his tracks so he does not seem blasphemous and the punishment that would come with being blasphemous. It is interesting though why he would even mention Moses when he could have been as easily left out? Machiavelli believed for a prince to be successful he must found a state that will not need a prince once he dies. This belief was stretched over The Prince and The Discourses. The question though is how can a prince make himself obsolete or should he make himself completely obsolete? The answer is no he can not make himself completely obsolete. Niccolo Machiavelli was the first to clearly decipher politics from ethics by studying politics in such depth and thought. He created the basis of what politics should be and how they are runned for today. His book The Prince is primarily a handbook for all rulers to follow to be the most successful in their reign. His book is considered political realism which means he speaks about only the truth of politics, so it can be used for the practice of governing. Machiavelli's book is the handbook for obtaining and maintaining power even for today's modern politics.

Obtaining power is one of the most important ways to either become a ruler or gaining the right to rule. But, in today's politics the president is already in power so he doesn't have to gain much more. Machiavelli lays out 3 ways to obtain power in chapter 5. "The first is the destroy it...who will keep the rest your friends." (Machiavelli, pg. 11). In today's government we don't go out destroying countries to add to our land but about 500 years ago we would go to war to obtain the control of whatever space we wanted in the US. Way two is what the president does today which is live in the US since he is in control of it. Lastly, the president will probably never do the third way which is leave his country to live under another country's rule to become friends. "Since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved." (Machiavelli). This quote Machiavelli strongly believes in goes over the extent of the president today. No one running or currently president wants to be known as the evil one or someone who is feared by many. They want to be loved by many to win the votes but they also need to have a backbone so they don't have other countries stepping all over them. But, this quote can be seen used by bad rulers in history and even today. One example is Hitler, he rose to power and was feared by many especially the people he targeted. He was able to obtain power so quickly because the Germans trusted him since being drilled to Heil Hitler at such a young age. Obtaining power back then is way over the extent to how the government today gains their power.

This text represents the attitude and personality, men living in the 16th century were capable of being. The men during the 16th century were scheming multiple changes to their interest and minds when they feel obligated to the loved ruler. This affected the rulers status because love to a ruler is "fickle false." The rulers men would easily try to take the opportunity to take advantage of the ruler. He who is a loved ruler, is only loved for the actions he can do. And for when the ruler can't make a gesture for his people, they would turn against their ruler. Which, would affect the ruler's power to be in control. Unlike being feared, the rulers people will do as he says, do to the sense of fear and will not cause any trouble. Machiavelli advices rulers to be feared to his people because of being less likely to be fooled and be taken advantage.

Analysis Of Niccolo Machiavelli

Niccolo Machiavelli, a late 15th century political adviser and a theorist who argued that we shouldn't think that politicians are immoral and are simply bad for lying, dissembling and maneuvering. A good politician in Machiavelli's remarkable views isn't the one who's friendly, honest and kind. It's someone, however is occasionally dark and who knows how to defend, enrich and bring honor to the state which is also an extremely important goal. Being pleasant and compassionate may well be a virtue in general but what citizens mostly need from their rulers is effectiveness, which may well be call upon some darker moves. Once we understand these basic requirements we tend to be clearer of what we want from our politicians. Niccolo Machiavelli was...show more content...

Some rulers like Caligula and Hitler started their reign as being loved by the people then later they used fear to rule because of the difficulties that were arising during their reign. The problem with using fear as Machiavelli suggests is that there is indeed a thin line between being feared and being hated also every other ruler uses fear to govern his people usually pass that line and gets hated by the people. This hatred towards the ruler causes rebel against him. If a ruler were to follow all these guidelines mentioned in chapter 17 that man might be a great respected ruler. Machiavelli says that a ruler must not touch a citizen's property. He must give justifications if he wants to avoid being hated. But the problem with this is that majority of the ruler chooses fear not according to all of Machiavelli's guidelines. Unfortunately it is humans' nature to be greedy, rebellious and envious. So how does the ruler establish the authority without being feared by the people? The answer I believe is love. It is only through love that a ruler can gain people respect, servitude and obedience without stirring up the emotions of fear, anger and hatred. On the other hand the answer perhaps also lies in the social and cultural

[Machiavelli, reprinted 1975, p.44.] Machiavelli believes that the state is only created if the people cooperate and work to maintain it.
