Carnegie Mellon University Personal Statement

The Carnegie Mellon University is one of the top–ranked engineering schools in the nation. I am interested in double majoring in the Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Biomedical Engineering programs at CMU. These programs appeal to me due to their emphasis on interdisciplinary studies and their commitment to achieving excellence.

As a kid, I would open up computers and other electronics to the dismay of my parents and pretend to fix problems. By the fifth grade, I got my own "LEGO MINDSTROM" kit, and I was building robots that shook hands while saying "Hello," cranes that could pick and place, and Lego trucks that avoided obstacles. My quest to understand the pathology of diseases has led me to undertake a clinical internship at Palomar Hospital and a research internship in cardiac tissue engineering at UCSD, where I investigated the effects of pressure on biomaterials like myocardial matrix hydrogels. As part of Carnegie Mellon biomedical engineering program, I will have the opportunity to pursue my research interests in interdisciplinary fields like biomaterials, tissue engineering, and computational neurosciences. I believe computational biology has the potential to transform and accelerate the way biomedical research will be conducted in the future. As a programming enthusiast, I hope to exploit modern computing power to model and analyze biological systems at a molecular and cellular level. With advances in stem cell research, metabolomics, and low–cost human genome sequencing, we are entering an age of personalized medicine in which low–cost computing will enable medical breakthroughs and new methods of treatment that are yet to be imagined.

On the surface, Carnegie Mellon checks all the boxes. It is an academically rigorous, midsize university where I can pursue my passions for business, design, cross country, and track. However, it wasn't until I spent three days on campus speaking with faculty members, coaches, students, and admissions officers that I knew CMU was the right place for me. In the West, life and death is a very sensitive topic. So many people are obsessed with living as long as they can and trying to put off what will come regardless. Dr. Randy Pausch presented to the world a different view on death. He came out with the bold attitude towards death based on the idea that anyone can always have fun and enjoy life despite the fact that there is a definite ending. Pausch was able to persuade the four hundred some–odd people in the hall to shift their focus away from death and more towards the childhood dreams of both themselves and others. He is able to present a solid argument that it is certainly possible to lead a life full of happiness and fulfillment as long as one is focused on bettering the lives of those around them. Pausch gave his lecture at Carnegie Mellon University on September 18th, 2007. At this point, doctors had expected him to last another three to six months. Pausch was a professor at CMU, and as tradition, retiring professors give a final lecture as their goodbye. The idea is to give a speech as though one was dying. Carnegie Mellon is known for having an outstanding academic program, and I want to learn from a university that has strong academics. However, this program may not be the best fit for all students because it breeds stress and anxiety. Throughouthigh school, I learned that stress helps push me forward instead of shutting me down. When I have multitudinous tasks to accomplish, I am more focused and motivated to do them. This is the main reason Carnegie Mellon is the right environment for me: I know I will be challenged and I will learn more effectively this way.
