Every year, millions of young Americans pack their cars with their most prized possessions and head for college. As you prepare to leave your family home behind, these tips will help you pack for college so you have everything you need for your first day on campus. Leave the Large Furniture Behind
Most dorm rooms and apartments commonly rented out to college students come fully furnished, so you can leave most of your furniture behind.
Of course, a few pieces of familiar furniture can make your new room feel more like home. Try to choose pieces that won't take up a lot of space in your car. For example, a beanbag packs down to nearly nothing if you remove the styrofoam beads. You can always buy more when you reach campus. A good office chair also won't take up a lot of space if you disassemble it. Just remember to take your Allen key so you can put it back together when you arrive. Bring the Right Stuff

So what should you bring? "Today's Homeowner" suggests you make space for a small microwave and a mini–fridge. With these two appliances, you can keep and prepare food in your room and be less tempted to eat out. Campuses can be enormous and public transport isn't always there when you want it, so consider packing a bike or skateboard to get around. Since most old dorm rooms aren't air–conditioned, you'll also be thankful for a desk fan during the summer months.
Also think about what hobbies you might enjoy in or around campus. If your Get more content
My First Day On Campus
Washburn is a small but unique campus that is full of many different things that involve the student body. My experience the first day of campus was a life experience that consisted of me getting lost at first, trying to get to my classes. Then also, I got to meet new people that I liked and we had common interests between us. Next, during class I was listening to my professors go over the syllabus and how the class was going to go for the rest of the semester. At moments, there were times that I felt nervous to talk in front of class that day because of the environment of other people having all their eyes on me and listening to what I had to say. Towards the end of my classes, it was interesting to see the different things on campus which grabbed my attention. As my last class ended for the day and we were dismissed to leave, it felt like pressure within me was released off my body. The first day of college was an experience that I would never forget. That day was interesting with a few reasons. The start of my day consisted of me getting lost, trying to get to my different classes throughout the day and finding when and where to go. Many of my classes were in different buildings on campus. Some of them were further than others. It was like my first day of high school, difficult to get around but at the same time like college getting around. For instance, there were people around to help direct me to my classes. When walking around on campus I kept seeing people at Get

My first college experience was at 18 years old, a young 18 I turned 18 in May and moved out of state to attend a small private college in Indiana in August that same year. Went I graduated college I thought I was prepared and had all the tools I would need to succeed in college. In high school I did everything (or so I though) I took advanced placement classes, I had a after school job, I was dedicated and serious about my classroom. My first week of classes, I felt great, I thought I've got this no problem. Boy was I wrong. I began to struggle just a few week into classes and continued to struggle consistently throughout the year. Not just academically, but emotionally too. I was away from home for the first time, I moved to a new state and new city not knowing anyone for having the support I needed. After my barely scraping by my first year of college, I decided to move home and go to Ohio State. Thing did not really improve academically for me there and after 2 semesters I dropped out. At this point I was married and living on our own, I needed to work. I put my collegeeducation on hold for 11 years. During this time, I got a job as a receptionist in an office and worked there for 4 years until I was laid off. I few weeks later, I receive another receptionist job which lead to my career in Project Management. I worked as a project manager for 5 years, but still aspired to go back to college. However, having 3 kids, a husband, dog, house, and a laundry list of other Get

When I was updating my Fall quarter schedule, I was not sure whether or not I should take another class, since I knew all three of my classes would be challenging. Because of that, if ever I decided to take fourth class, I wanted a class that would be easy, fun, and enjoyable. I also wanted a class that would help me raise my GPA and help me fulfill some of my elective units. Upon scrolling through my options, I came across Education 001: Imagining Teaching Education. Looking at the overview I thought to myself, "This shouldn't be too bad. It's an introduction on how to teach, it's only 2 units, and we would only meet once a week. How hard can this class get?!" Without a doubt, I registered to this class thinking it will be an easy A. The first day of the class was indeed fun and I was positive about my decision in enrolling to the class. However, all of my assumptions took a detour downhill after I attended weeks two and three of the class. From then, I realized that this class is not the typical "two unit, easy A" class, rather it was more of a "work hard for it to get an A" class. I struggled in the beginning of the course. Although I would do all the readings required for the week, my reading questions did not seem to reflect that because of the unsatisfied scores I would get. Honestly, this class stressed me out; especially knowing that it is only a 2–unit course, but the amount of workload and the stress it was providing me seemed like it was a 4–unit class. Because

My First Day Of The Class Essay
August 19, 2013 I walked into Central Louisiana Central Community College, my knees shaking, stomach upside down, and biting my nails. It was my first day of nursing school. My first day as a college student. I felt very alone, because I did not know a single person in the class. As I sat and listened to the rules, and regulations I became even more nervous. In the back of my mind I kept saying to myself "Oh, I'm not going to make it through this." I felt like a fish out of water. The brunette in front of me would not keep her mouth shut, and I was ready to just scream. The first week of class was a nightmare, and little did I know it would only continue to get worse. In high school, I graduated in the top of my class. Homework was never a problem, because I never had any. Studying was out of the question, because catching on to the material was very easy. Life was great as a high school student. Never having to choose between school, or fun was amazing. After four long years of high school, I thought college was going to be a breeze. Little did I know, nursing school was one of the toughest things I would ever accomplish. I am still surprised today that I actually made it through. Classes started at seven o'clock and ended at four o'clock. Monday through Friday was dedicated to school. There was no time for fun, or partying. I worked every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Lowes Home Improvement to barely pay the bills. Working while in school was a challenge. There was

Nursing Home
My first day at work was stressful and I was very saddened that I couldn 't do much to help. I was placed to work on the long term care side of the nursing home and was told everyone down this hall is a two–person care. I didn 't expect to see most of them in really bad health and the other C.N.A workers just went about and worked like nothing was wrong, but it was so hard to see people who couldn 't move much and you could tell they were trying so hard to talk and try moving. This eventful day changed my life I thought I wasn 't going to be able to work here until I was washing an old man's back and he started crying as I stopped, I took a step back and asked if I had hurt him he said "no I'm sorry it's just no one has every touched my back since my wife had passed" as I realized how important I can make these people I felt it as a privilege to be able to help at them a their most vulnerable point in life. My family, my two jobs, and career goals are the factors that have shaped me into the caring person I am today and has gotten me to where I am today.
My family has always been so supportive and I am lucky to have all my loved ones near me. I always want to please my family in any way possible so as soon as my grandma asked what I wanted to do with my life I explained "I really don't know" this is when she said she wanted me to be a nurse and take care of her. The first ten days of college are some other experience. When I arrived on campus for the Eagle Incentive Program it was in the high nighties with some humidity. Moving in wasn't that bad, it was just extremely hot. I was breaking a sweat walking up and down the Southern Pines stairs. The next day was time to say goodbye to my family. After giving my mom a big warm hug and a kiss goodbye, seeing them leave was a weird feeling. As I walked up the stairs to head back in my room the feeling really crossed my mind that I wasn't going to see her again for another five weeks. It was an emotional few seconds saying goodbye, but I knew my mom was proud of my accomplishments that I achieved. Motived to work hard and make her even more of a proud mother; my sad emotions soon turned into happy thoughts. Well, it was not long before my mom was disappointed in me. My first week here I actually got myself in debt and my parents were furious at me. They told me in a serious tone that if that ever happens again, I will have to make myself money. Money management has already gotten me by the tail. Back at home, I could spend money here and there because I had a job and was getting paid weekly. Unemployed now because of moving to Statesboro, I only get 35$ put on my debit card a week. My spending that week was on three meals from Zaxbys and my money was gone. Thirty–five dollars may seem like a lot, but it flies by in college. In an article on usnews.com it states "Talking to students about

My first day at college had a great meaning to me. It was the beginning of my dream to go to college and to pursue a higher education.I had so many emotions running trough me , it was the first time being in this level and the first time paying for education myself. I always wanted to be a college student, a serious student who would decide what to be in her life. The first day at Truman College was on August 25th, 2005. The first year of my freshman year and Fall semester. That day I had so many things on my mind, from what I was going to wear to figure out where the class number and the floor it would be located at. It was actually a day full of new experiences. I never took a class like this before, and it was a totally different system than a traditional class that I used to attend. I considered that would help me later in the future with other classes. Thus, I loved the idea of taking an English class in this kind of environment, moreover, I was proud to be part of it. In addition, I thought it was a good idea to use laptops in class since I owed one at home, and I was able to relate with the purpose of the class. For instance, I could enter an electronic group–forum from home, so we were able to share ideas an opinions without being in the classroom. Also, I found very handy to be able to send my homework electronically to my teacher.
On the other hand, one of the greatest experiences I had in the first day was, not only being in a interesting English class, but being part of a diverse and cultural international class. Well, I call it this way because to me, it was the first impression. Although, I always wanted to study abroad and to be an international student , English 100, gave me the opportunity to meet and share experiences with people from other nationalities. Although most of my classmates did not speak Spanish, which is my native language, I was able to communicate in English with them. Moreover, I was interested in learning another language; thus, I met a girl from

My Experience In A College Class
"Welcome Class to Composition one." Those words were voiced by my professor, Mrs. Robinson, on the first day of school. Initially, I thought to myself, do I even belong in this college course class. Before school had even begun, the stress over the summer about my English skills was eating me alive. Why? Well, in my past English classes I received A's on all of my essays, but this college class did not seem so easy. Also, I was always fascinated by all the arts and sciences, but English never struck interest in me. I never thought that I could write any decent essays. The reason I insecure about my writing skills was because of the ACT. Since the ACT is the talk about how smart an individual is, my ACT score was not very high. As the course continued, the firstessay approached quickly. I remember being stressed about this essay because of my writing insecurities. Although I managed to acquire a decent grade, I promised myself to strive to make myself a better writer. I started to read Norton Field Guide to Writing handbook also known as the yellow book, and slowly but surely started to develop knowledge of good writing skills and tips to improve my essays. This allowed me to grow as a writer and slowly my insecurities started to dwindle, and I began to gain confidence in myself. I never would've thought that the next time I took the ACT that my English score would be my highest. When getting my score back and realizing that I had improved so much, I began to wonder how I

An Essay on My First Day at College
I remember my first day at college. I had looked forward to it nom my school days. Life at college meant for me the joy of a free and fuller life. It meant that I was no longer a day that I had grown up and had become fit to bear larger responsibilities. Naturally first day at college was the beginning of a new chapter in my life.
First tasted freedom when I saw that I would no longer be confined to the same room for hours together as I used to be at school. I had to move from room to room at the end of each lecture. From lecture hall to library, from seminar to laboratory, from common room to gymnasium, a college student is constantly on the move. To me on the first day that in itself was thrilling experience. Imagine a hundred of us rushing down the corridors, or across fields to the next class to occupy the best or the most comfortable seat. It was a sensation of new life, a feeling of exciting youthful vitality. Of course, there were some among us who took it gravely and philosophically, and went from class to class at a sedate and sober pace indifferent whether they occupied a seat on the first bench or on the last. But I was not one of these. It was privilege to be able to choose my own seat, to have struggle for it and to get it by mu own effort. It gave me a sense of personality; I tasted life, as it were with a deep relish.
Then I found that here at college I would not be kept at my books all the four or five hours of my stay. Sometimes between classes there would be a break; an off–period or two which I could spend relaxing. My college had a good reading–room attached to the library, and a common room which was even better furnished with means for healthy indoor recreations, carom and Ping–Pong sets; newspapers and periodicals: benches on which we could lounge and space to loiter in. on that first day I was of course a mere looker–on; the seniors were there, reading newspapers, playing games, or discussing things. How important and grown–up they looked. Soon I also would be one of them. In that common–room for students I looked forward to having many hours of joy. I also walked about the library and the corridors and realized with pride that I was a member of a

It was an information session regarding the safety rules and discipline. In the afternoon, I participated in a tour of the department and was introduced to various personnel. The second day of my internship, I was involved in a safety training, and some outdoor activities, such as flagging on the road side and backing up ODOT's trucks. In the afternoon, I met with my supervisor, who introduced me to each member of the department of planning and engineering design where I will be working for two mouths, and after join the construction department for the rest of internship. Wednesday, I met again with my supervisor who gave me my schedule, and put me in contact with a design engineer for a training in Micro station, a graphic engineering software used by the department of planning and engineering for drawing and design purposes. In the afternoon, I spent my time learning about Micro station and get to know more about the software. This semester was my first time taking an online class, it was nerve wrecking at first I am proud about how well I transition from the traditional class room setting to this. Going into this class I knew that there was going to be a lot of writing being that it was an English course. I expected to ease though and not spend so many amount of hours on assignments. I expected it to be better structure and for all of my peers to participate in the class. For example when we had the first professor, it was chaos trying to find a partner to do a peer review with. Many of the students were not as active in the course as they should have been. Now, that it has come down to the last week I'll say I'm pretty satisfied with how the class turned out. Getting a new professor was good because even when the old professor was still over the course he was not nearly as active as professor Mustachio. I will be taking another online line class this fall semester. I am not sure if it is going to be a lot of writing if so I feel that this class as prepared me for what I should and should not expect. When it came time to do writing assignments essays in particular. I would always start out by drafting my ideas onpaper. Listing out all the options that I could think of to go with the particular assignment. Then begin to write out my entire essay on paper before typing. Unfortunately it is hard for me to carry out this plan to its entirety. I always stop writing and just type and often I do not

My First Time Taking An Online Class
My First Day– On my first day of field work at Ps.198 I remember feeling so nervous. As soon as I step in the school building my heart was pumping with anxiety. All I could think of is what if the students don't enjoy my company in their classroom, and what If the teacher doesn't get along with me and how will I survive through the whole experience. Once I got signed to a class I remember stepping in the classroom while the teacher was teaching the students. At first, I felt awkward because all the students were looking at me. I recall being so shy and at first, I would just sit and observed most of the time. As soon as the teacher finished her lesson she finally presented me to the class and that's when I felt welcomed.

I started to ask Ms. Mandelbaum for tips on teaching. As time passed by I felt very comfortable being around the students and helping them out when they had questions. Ms. Mandelbaum helped me out a lot when it came to the social science lessons because she'll always gave me a heads up on the lesson plan and told me to read the class a book. At end of this I could say I overcame my challenges for the better. My Professional Growth– During this experience, it did help me grow not just in general but in a professional way too because coming to this course I remember professor Leslie asked us "what was our long–term goal" and I said, "to be a teacher but if that doesn't work out I have a plan b which would be to obtain a clinical medical assistant certificate" and once I started going to the field work my thoughts changed. The reason I said I have a plan B was because I was doubting myself whether I wanted to be a teacher or not. Getting to know the students and the school environment it made me change my

My First Day Essay
It was a warm autumn morning and the sun was just rising on the horizon. I was already awake and ready for my first day at the college. Later I found myself standing crusted like a statue behind the white door which reminded me an endless emotional tension that I usually experience all the time while facing a simple for some people but for me a very difficult situation to deal with. For a long period of time a very deep anxiety and nervousness had been my only response to the situations when I had to interact with new people. Communication has always been an unsolvable issue in my life as long as I remember myself, which caused me a lot of trouble during my daily life and, i always tried to avoid it and couldn 't find a will–power or capabilities to overcome it meanwhile realizing that my life would have been a lot easier than at that moment. Finally, I could suppress my nervousness and after taking a deep breath I opened the door and quietly entered the classroom. It was dark and unwelcoming like on purpose adding more anxiety to my already bad situation. There were two students sitting, one of them was in the very front seat right before the teacher 's seat with a notebook and a book on the desk ready for the class. For a moment he cast a quick glance at me, l guess expecting to see the instructor instead of me, he just looked at me very indifferently. The other student was in the very last seat plunged into his phone like if there is no life existing beside his phone.

My First Day At The College
My first day of college was kind of a blur but it was most certainly a very important one. I spent my first semester of college at Central Michigan University, I arrived on the Friday before classes started which is commonly known as "Welcome Weekend" around campus. Coming into it I really didn't know what to expect from college, I was really nervous about meeting my roommates and having to communicate with them. I had been friends with the same 6 people for the past 5 years and moving on into a new environment where I knew no one was pretty daunting. I live in Livonia Michigan it's about 20 minutes out from Detroit, CMU is in Mount Pleasant just over 2 hours away. I was so sad to leave my friends that day I basically slept the whole way to Mount Pleasant just so I wouldn't cry. When I arrived my parents and I along with some help from the student volunteers unpacked my aunts minivan and moved into my home for next 9 months. I was the first to arrive so I obviously chose the biggest room, I stayed in Trout hall on the north side of campus. The way they had it set was 4 roommates in one dorm, each dorm had 2 bed rooms and 1 bathroom as well as a common room. Different dorm halls had different rooming methods but the one Trout used was pretty common on campus. Students were either waiting in the hallways for their next class or walking quickly to their next class. Conversing with their peers some students appeared to be happy and others not so happy. It reminded me ofhigh school but without the lockers and the yard supervisors shouting at you to get to class. Once in class and seated the uneasiness found its way back to my gut. Waiting for the professor as the class filled up felt like time without end. The glimpses I acquired from other students were hard to read as some were with a half–smile or just a blank stare. Without a doubt, the feeling of nervousness and anxiety was felt throughout the room. Keeping an open mind of others wasn't hard since my nurturing side kicked in and my "Mom Mode" quickly turned on. The majority of these students could easily be my kids given the fact that most were just out of high school. Although I was hesitant to be in class with so many young people it didn't stop me from endeavoring my new journey. One sunny day many years ago in the parking lot of Husson University a car comes to a sudden stop. The door swings opens and out steps a young woman named, Heather Patten. It's the first day of college and she can feel the butterflies franticly swarming around in her stomach. "Husson University is a big place especially if you don't know anyone there and have no clue where your classes are." Eventually, like any place, Heather got used to the many buildings and huge campus. She was at a great place in her life, finally she was own her own. She graduated high school 10th out of her class, and got her wish to go to a college close to home. "I didn't want to go away for college." Heather stated. At the time she lived in Glenburn, Maine so her options were limited. The only two colleges that caught her eye were Husson, because it had a physical therapy program, and the University of Maine because it was a little less expensive and she could study there to become a teacher. "I applied for both and got accepted into both of them so I decided that I would try physical therapy because it was harder but if I didn't like it I would switch and become a teacher." Another reason Heather leaned towards going to Husson and becoming a physical therapist is because when she was in high school her guidance counselor told her that she was not smart enough to go into physical therapy school. Her guidance counselor also told her even if she did she wouldn't make it into the school she wouldn't

Red–Not So Terrifying After All
I used to be very reluctant to write essays in English because it was hard for me to express my ideas in my second language, and it is easy to make mistakes. I was afraid of making mistakes, but the more I was afraid the more mistakes I made, forming an endless loop. Mr. Wang, my high English school teacher, broke the loop by showing that making errors is not terrifying and by building my confidence through the process of correcting errors.
My first impression of Mr. Wang was not so good. It was the first school day of 11th grade. I remember it was a sticky summer afternoon, and the air was heavy and sweltering. Given the other courses I was taking, only Mr. Wang's class fit in my schedule. While walking towards the classroom, I thought I was so unfortunate because Mr. Wang was known for his strict teaching and his preference for giving low grades. After crossing a narrow corridor, I found my classroom, a small room with no windows and no AC. After I found a seat, a man in a white shirt that had a turned little bit yellow in front of chest came into the classroom. He stared at us through his thick, fogged glasses for a while. After combing his greasy hair, he said, "Good afternoon everyone, my name is Wang and I will be yourwriting teacher." Then he started teaching. In that small room, I felt I was suffocating and his voice made me drowsy. I doubted his teaching ability. "Tony," I heard. Suddenly he called my name.

My Goals For My First Semester
After two full weeks of college I have quickly learned that college is very stressful and if I want to be successful I need to learn how to set practical goals and acquire necessary tactics to accomplish each goal in the given amount of time. I have set three goals for my first semester of college to achieve success in both academic and personal areas in my life. I want to receive a 4.0 GPA, only have up to one absence in each class, and be able to run seven miles nonstop, I will complete these three goals all in my first semester of college. With essentialgoal setting strategies I am equipped with I will be able to accomplish my three goals in the time frame given and set myself up for success for next semesters as a UNC student. My first goal is to earn a 4.0 GPA this fall semester. This is an enabling goal because I will need I need to have above a 3.8 to get into the nursing program at UNC, therefore getting perfect grades this semester will set me up for success in the future semesters. To accomplish this goal, I will have to study for at least two hours a day, Monday through Friday. I will also need to go to at least three hours of tutoring each week. I live in a pre–nursing living community, therefore my RA has tutoring hours and the school provides two hours for each class of tutoring a week. I am a disorganized person and I rarely use a planner, and to get a 4.0 I will need to be very organized. To address this potential obstacle, I will sit down every Sunday and

It was my first day of college ever when I walked into my English 1060 class. I felt my stomach doing flips. I was filled with the anticipation on what it was going to be like, what I was going to learn and how hard it was going to be. Before becoming a student at Oakland Community College, I went to Brandon High School. I read purely for entertainment, my favorite books only being found in the teen section at book stores and libraries. My writing habits and "skills" only consisted of avoiding the paper I had to write until the night before the due date and somehow finishing it. In the beginning, writing essays in English 1060 class was a struggle for me. Now that it is coming to the end of this semester, I have learned so many new skills not only in writing, but in reading also. I have come far this semester but I still have so much to learn. During this semester, I learned many new reading strategies. One of the reading strategies I learned was on how to annotate and take notes while reading, and summarizing what I had just read; it has helped me understand the context of what I am reading. I have applied these strategies to my English course by using them when reading the book In a Rocket Made of Ice and other pieces of literature we had to read in class. I have exercised many of the reading strategies I have learned in English this semester to other classes I am enrolled in at Oakland Community College. In my College Success class when I am
