Show the students how each line has an adjective. The phrase may begin with a verb but there is still an adjective in each line. Tell the students that we are going to create some art with the names and adjectives. Using some of the adjectives that they wrote earlier in the lesson, ask the students to try to think of an adjective to write for each line of their partner's name. (They may ask other classmates to help and share as this is a fun and enjoyable activity.) Model for the students how they will take a piece of paper and turn it vertically. Then, they will take a plastic stencil and trace each letter of their partner's name vertically. (In order to share, some students may brainstorm for adjectives while other students use the plastic stencil.) Each letter of their partner's name should also be capitalized in order to stand out when decorated. Now show the students examples of how they can decorate each letter with a different pattern–for example a solid, polka–dotted, print, or floral pattern. 6. Have students share art work with the class. Display on wall on bulletin board if desired. 7. Ask students what adjectives they learned today. How do you know a word is an adjective? Personal Adjectives

Everyone has a personal brand given to them by someone they know like a friend or family member. All brands are different depending on the person and the way people view them. A personal brand has to do with qualities and adjectives that describe you, what you stand for in the minds of those who know you, and your goals and purpose in life. Qualities that define my personal brand include leadership and outgoing qualities. My leadership qualities come from my abilities to treat others with respect and having an open mind about others opinions. My outgoing qualities come from my ability to communicate well with others. Three adjectives that describe my personal brand are friendly, understanding, and generous. I used friendly as an adjective...show more content...

Once I am in college, I want to study to become either a physical therapist or a teacher for kids with special needs. I want to become a physical therapist because I want to help people get better and help them get back to their daily routines. At first I wanted to be a doctor because I wanted to help save people's lives, but I get really grossed out when it comes to blood and open wounds, so then I decided that I could help people get back on their feet after their surgeries. Becoming a teacher for kids with special needs is my second career choice because I get really emotional when I see a poor innocent kid having to suffer. I also get really upset and defensive when people look and treat them differently because it's not their fault that they are the way they are. I have learned through experiences that kids with special needs are the most kindest people you could ever meet and some of them are really funny. I bet at first it will be a lot of hard work, but as time goes by it will get easier and I will enjoy going to work. My purpose in life is to give back and help others because I am very thankful and appreciative of everything in my life, which is why my main career choices have to do with helping

How effectively does Hughes convey the power of the jaguar?

Ted Hughes' poem 'The Jaguar' describes the animals in a zoo and their lifestyles. It also compares them to the jaguar, which is an animal that lives differently to the others in the way that it views its life. The poem depicts the jaguar as powerful, but in what way? The first line of Ted Hughes' poem the jaguar is:

"The apes yawn and adore their fleas in the sun."

From the very first three words it is clear that the apes are tired, and the fact that they are in the sun adds to the sleepy air. I think this line was deliberately chosen to begin to convey the monotonous lull of everyday life in the zoo and set a drowsy mood. They are...show more content...

The following lines include some especially carefully chosen diction, as they describe the boa–constrictor which has a coil in it's tail, which supposedly "is a fossil". This metaphorical sentence is quite powerful, as the use of the word fossil depicts the stillness of the snake and also suggests that it may have been in such a position for a long time. This is also supported by the use of a metaphor rather than a simile, which would have left some room for the possibility of the snake only being similar to a fossil at that particular moment. Also, fossils like ammonites are coiled in shape so it is therefore a justified comparison.

The end of the second line of stanza two is: "cage after cage seems empty" which signifies the monotonous appearance of the cages, which hold very little activity as all the animals therein are barely moving, hence again the use of the word fossil in the metaphor. Basically, the animals are dull and not a very piquant sight for visitors. The next line uses the alliteration "stinks of sleepers". This is reminiscent of the snake's hissing tone, so a snake–like theme has affected this stanza. I don't think it means that the sleepers literally stink, just that there is a strong 'flavour' of doziness in the air, as if there is no activity to interest the visitors. Some of the sleeping animals themselves are hidden under straw, so the author uses another metaphor and suggests that the

Assignment 3 Adjectives

The three adjectives that I jotted down about my impression of the scenery were calm, simple, and almost bare. The stage was small and only had a single bench on it. My first impression of an almost bare stage was that this was a character based performance and that the audience can focus on the characters and their development without any props distracting the audience from their performances. Additionally, the atmosphere felt calm; since there wasn't any props it was soothing to see only the blue of the stage. It reminded me of the ocean, which is where I go sometimes to calm myself down if I am stressing out. Furthermore, the stage design was simple, which again makes the audience focus strictly on the characters instead of being distracted by props. I enjoyed that aspect because when I usually go see a play, I tend to focus on the props and then I miss out on the character development....show more content...

In my opinion, the lightning was well done and changed when the scene changed, which is why I chose mostly colors as adjectives. For example, when it was night, the lights dimmed and turn an either a dark blue or light purple. When it was time for Proteus to board the boat to Milan, the lights turned a faint orange, which gives you the impression that he was boarding the boat either early morning or mid–afternoon. It made it seem as if the sun was either rising or setting. Additionally, during the opening scene when Valentine exited Verona, the stage and lightning were a sea blue, which gave the impression that the scene took place near the sea and that the audience was near the sea as well. It was impressive lightning, and I enjoyed the fact that it changed when the scenery

Adjectives For Red Lobster

Hello Justin, you utilized useful adjectives to help convey your descriptions of the food in your project. The famous water tank containing the lobsters description that implemented into your writing was excellent. Anyone that has been to Red Lobster before knows exactly what you are talking about! Maybe you could also include how you know this person that you interviewed by stating that she is a co–worker, friend, etc. to help the reader feel more connected. That is the only other thing that I would like to know about the participant. Otherwise you did a sufficient job utilizing quotes from your participant in your project. The photos in your project had good placement, but you could try minimizing them a little more. The last thing I wanted

Analysis of Descriptive Adjectives in Two Stories

In any story, the reader needs some way of imagining what the author is writing about. When writing, authors use descriptive words to illustrate what they are trying to convey to the reader and to enhance their story. In the stories "The Treasure of Lemon Brown" byWalter Dean Myersand "The House of the Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer, both authors use descriptive words to develop the mood of the setting and the characters. In "The Treasure of Lemon Brown," Myers uses descriptive words to describe the setting, characters, and also the mood. He used such words in a scene from the story where the main character, Greg, is walking down an empty street and is looking for shelter from a thunderstorm. The phrase, "Graffiti–scarred building...grim shadows." is used to describe the buildings around him. These words are used to set up the depressed or ominous mood of the setting, by using words such as "scarred" and "grim." Those particular words cause it to seem as though the graffiti is old and permanent, as if the neighborhood has been this way for a while, and will remain that way: gloomy and depressed. Furthermore, Myers uses these descriptive words to describe Lemon Brown when he writes, "His black, heavily wrinkled face was surrounded by a halo of crinkly white hair and whiskers that seemed to separate his head from the layers of dirty coats piled on his small frame." From this the reader can tell that this is an aged man, who is

He questioned some of the evidences that he found questionable and had a strong sense of justice and reasoning behind why he believed the boy was innocent. What do you see as the motivating or driving force behind your character? That is, what pushes him to say what he says and do what he does? The motivating force behind Juror #11 is his sense of justice. He believes that it is the duty of the jurors to judge the defendant fairly and honestly. He also has a strong sense of American pride even though he is a foreigner a strong admirer of American rights.

Three Focused Adjectives

All About You

Please list three thoughtful adjectives that you believe best describe who you are and describe why you selected them. I believe that I am extremely warm–hearted because I care about people and try to make people feel special. I am also observational. From a toddler I would just sit, watch, and listen to what was going on around me. This gives me insight into people as I am not waiting to talk. I understand situations can contribute when needed. My initial thought of being a doctor came at six and by nine I decided I might like radiology. This seems to fit with my observational nature, however, whether I continue with this idea depends on exposure to other disciplines. Finally, I have a persevering and tenacious character. I do not give up when things are hard. I may stress over them, yet will always find a way to tackle the situation and succeed.

Since Jesse was a friend of mine, I have been supporting this foundation from the moment it started with a swim–a–thon for Jesse's Joy Jar program. Working to help children with cancer have some joy in their life during their struggle with the disease is so important. My focus was to create awareness about the foundation, to raise funds through cupcake sales (that was her favorite) and work at the foundation filling Joy Jars. We were successful at accomplishing these goals, but I would have liked to do more. We had over 100 people show up for our first few meetings and that did fall to just about 50 people participating in various events. However, the people who continued to come to the club meetings were amazing, and at our first Courageous Cupcake stand, everyone brought home–made cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and fudge! We all worked so hard and ended up making $200, which we donated to Jessie's foundation. Over the year we worked so hard together and we were all so happy to know we were making a

Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language. Figurative language is the use of language to describe something by comparing it to something else. It serves many linguistic purposes. It allows people to express abstract thoughts. It creates tone and communicates emotional content. The ability to use figurative language in writing can make a poem or story more enjoyable for the reader. Figurative language is taking words beyond their literal meaning and can come in many different forms, all to create a vivid picture of the written word. There are many ways to incorporate figurative language into writing, some of which...show more content... In the line "Loose girdle of soft rain", from "My Grandmother's Love Letters", the rain is compared to a loose belt, which is a clear example of Personification and much easier to understand. Creating imagery for the reader helps to entertain, provoke thought or help the reader escape to another reality. Sometimes it can even be silly such as the repetition of the same initial letter, sound, or group of sounds in a series of words. This usage of figurative language is called Alliteration and includes tongue twisters such as "She sells seashells by the seashore". Many writers will use words that describe or imitate a natural sound or the sound made by an object to create imagery within the writing. This is called Onomatopoeia, and although it is a big word that is hard to pronounce, it is the use of small words such as snap, crackle, pop, buzz and creaked that help bring a story or poem to life. Another form of imagery that is used quite often is Hyperbole. This is the use of statements that are so dramatic and exaggerated that a person would not believe the statement is true. "I was so hungry that not only did I eat my dinner, I ate the plate and silverware too." A synecdoche is a form of imagery that substitutes a whole object with one aspect of that object. The literal definition of the word "redemption" is the act, process, or an instance of redeeming (forgiven). When I as a human being think of redemption I think of it as a way to accept, forgive and move on after an instance of extreme, usually emotional, infliction. When we think of this in terms of prison, humans are put into isolation where they are given ample time to logically think of these trespasses and how they are paying for it with their lives. At the same time these people are doing very manual labor while getting 'paid' very little in order to redeem themselves to hopefully regain some rank again in society. In life where most of us live outside walls redemption comes in many different forms, although not all as painful....show more content...

When I myself am witness to acts of injustice my first reaction is usually anger, frustration which is then followed by a very vocal complaint. The same reactions come about when I myself am put under circumstances of injustice and I can only hope, but am not certain, that this is something regularly occurs with humans in general. I would have to say that some of the factors that contribute to the ways that I respond to injustice would be feelings that had occurred as a child when put into unjust situations as well as knowledge that I was given while growing up in both educational institutions as well as living in general. While I watched the movie Shawshank Redemption I witness an idea developed mainly by Stephen King that basically gave me hope by helping me see that due to what I call karma, the people that are exaggerating unjust behavior will eventually get what is coming to them. This is displayed well by the showing of all the ignorant behavior put on by the warden and what happened to him in the end. In our society taking away a persons freedom is considered justice because at this point these people do not have a choice. The choices that they have made so far have only gotten them into trouble, now they have given that up and are subjected to be treated basically like a slave. Solitary confinement is considered the most severe punishment that we can inflict in our justice system as
