The second awkward encounter with Cas' wings had happened a few days after their return to the bunker. The three had spent the past forty–eight hours with their faces pressed into books, reading in near silence save for muttered apologies about accidentally kicking someone under the table or asking for another beer. Dean had recently returned from a few hours of sleep, but by now he had gone through so many books that he doubted he could remember which titles he had already checked. The words and pages and articles were all running together to become one long book in his head. Still, he had dutifully resumed his position at the table with a new stack of reading material.

Castiel was not around; Dean assumed he was either out or resting. Sam...show more content... Cas, are these yours?" Dean indicated the black tufts all around him.

Cas looked annoyed, but too tired to argue. He shuffled past Dean to sit on his bed. "Yes. It's part of the healing process, no cause for concern." He was sitting up straight, like he usually did, but it wasn't with the same effortless ease. He swayed slightly, and Dean could see his shoulders shaking just slightly with the effort.

"Bullshit," Dean retorted. "Look, I don't know what's going on, but it's clearly wearing you down. And that's concerning, because angels aren't supposed to wear down."

"I told you, Dean, I'll be just fine with time."

He'd heard his name leave Cas' mouth in many variations, but this cold, biting snarl was not one of them. Dean felt his frustration rise; he'd never had the ability to gently coax a person into giving him information, the way Sam could.

"Dammit Cas, just tell me what–"

"My wings." Cas hadn't yelled, but his voice had smothered Dean's with an authoritative finality nonetheless. "My wings were injured when

Since the group acknowledges their time overseas is far from over, they try to make the best of their situation. For instance, when their Sergeant, Simpson, asks how they like Vietnam, PeeWee responds saying, "I loves it here...I ain't never seen no place in the world better than this place right here. You know what I love the most? ...The bugs" (55). Although the men are homesick and miserable, they try to keep a positive mindset, as mindset is crucial in a life–or–death situation such as theirs. Later on, Richie gets sick, which causes him to miss a patrol with his group and have to patrol with another squad. In the hectic threat of attack, Richie's squad accidentally attacks the entire first platoon their own men. Losing Innocence: "Fallen Angels" find the true meaning of war

"Fallen Angels", written by Walter Dean Myers, is a novel that tells about the story of young boys going into battle during the Vietnam War. There are many themes in "Fallen Angels" but the main theme is the loss of innocence. The title makes reference to these themes. And the boys in the book have dreams of losing their virginity and drinking alcohol for the first time. They are thrown into a harsh reality when they are shown the trials of war. In the end, they understand that the movies that depict heroicness and honor are just images of a false idea; that war is full of chaos and horror.

The title of "Fallen...show more content...

They have not seen the terrible things that happen in war and therefore feel invincible to the danger they are to encounter. The "fallen" in the title indicates the loss of innocence that makes them "angels". Though losing innocence is something that every young person goes through, these boys must grow up fast during war. Richie, the narrator and protagonist, and the members of his squad fantasize of their first sexual experiences. Peewee, a member of Richie's squad, even sets goals for himself. He says he will "drink wine from a corked bottle, smoke a cigar, and make love to a foreign woman. These are all immature ideas the boys have but they are soon taught that the real things that must focus on are not alcohol and sex, but the virtues and values they will learn as a soldier.

During their battles the squad sees that survival is not something that is taught but a matter of pure chance. They see their allies shooting allies. Their close friends in the war are killed and they must face the reality that getting out alive is luck. The goal of killing the enemy turns into just trying to stay alive yourself. And when their time is done they are faced with mourning for those who fell and bitter sweet relief that it is over. The theme, loss of innocence, in "Fallen Angels" is shown all throughout the novel along with many

The book Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers is a compelling story about Richard Perry, a young african american man from Harlem, who wasn't able to go to college after high school and decides to become a soldier and fight in the harsh, humid jungles of Vietnam. The story features a first person narrative from Perry and shows the daily life for him and his squad throughout this gruesome war. The book itself is a great read and I definitely recommend it. It can be a little disturbing at times, so it might not be the best choice for everybody. There are some graphic scenes and there is a little bit of cursing throughout the book, to show the character of the soldiers. The detail of these gruesome injuries was something that I did not enjoy in the book The book is filled with some much action it almost feels tedious. In my opinion, Walter Dean Myers describes the scenery of the book so well, it basically feels like your alongside these soldiers in battle. He would describe the sounds, such as the whirl of the helicopter blades or the sound of the copious amounts of m–16's firing. The thing that really made him stand out however, was the amount of heartfelt emotion he made the characters express. This made me, the reader, have an almost personal connection towards these characters. It made me feel like I knew them from a past life. This book really got to the terminology that the soldiers used. It made me pick up countless words and slang that was said by the soldiers throughout the course of the book. They would say stuff like, sappers, rollers, hogs, charlies, commies, congs, and hamlets. Myers made sure that the reader would know the slang by making characters ask for definitions or including it in a definition–like sentence said by the

Walter Dean Myers Fallen Angels Essay

A Fallen Angel Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings." I t was translated from Spanish to English by Gregory Rabassa. It is the story of an elderly angel found by a family in their courtyard. It had rained for three days and crabs were coming into Pelayo's house. His baby became ill and he thought the illness was caused by the stench of the crabs. On returning home from throwing the crabs into the ocean, Pelayo encounters an old man with large battered wings lying face down in the mud. Frightened, he hurriedly beckons his wife to see his discovery. After their neighbor sees the winged man she assures them that this is an angel. She states that he had probably come for the child but had fallen due to his...show more content...

He tolerated the onlookers except at one point when they burned him with a branding iron. He jumped up in pain and yelled out in an unintelligible dialect. Pelayo and his family profit well from the angel, until a "spider woman" becomes the new central attraction. The angel could rest in the chicken coop, as he was no longer a sideshow spectacle. Pelayo had a great deal of money from his endeavor and built a large mansion. The only thing he did not rebuild was the chicken coop. After a time, the fear faded and the chicken coop door was left open. The child was allowed to play with him. They got chicken pox at the same time. After the chicken coop was destroyed by wear, the angel wandered about the house. Eventually the angel became frail and very ill he walked into posts, his wings were bare and finally collapsed into feverish fits. After the fevers past, he began to change. His feathers grew back and his health returned. Elisenda watched from the window as he clumsily took his first flight, eventually he gained control of his wings and soared into the distance and out of sight. The main characters of this story are the angel, Pelayo, his wife Elisenda and their child. The angel is a wretchedly sad character. He is old, worn and has no verbal means of communication. Pelayo and his wife are selfish and are in total control of the angel. Later in the story they appear sympathetic however, it is more lack of knowing what to do with the body of a

The medevac choppers got him down to Chu Lai, to the medical unit there, and they tried their best to save him, but could not. Mrs. Carrol... I am sorry to have to write to you under these circumstances. Yours, Richard Perry." (Myers 131) This quote will forever be known as the letter that informed Ms. Carroll of the terrible news. Like my thesis this quote explains that Richard Perry thought very high of Lt. Carroll and honored him dearly. It shows the deep respect he had for him, as well as the strength he had received by working by his side. It shows that Perry knew this was very alarming news and had to be written to the best of his ability, to show that this one human will continually influence himself and the company's life Get

Atmosphere In Fallen Angels

Atmosphere is essential to help bring energy to a story. Atmosphere can change throughout the novel, but in Fallen Angels it can be broken down into three sections. The first section consists of the uncertain state of war that the squad finds themselves in. This is shown by the opinions among the soldiers about what it will be like when they actually go to war. The first section also includes the shock of how different the real war is then what it is portrayed as. Peewee summed it up by saying, "I didn't think they was going to have no real fighting in this here war." (pg.23) the first section of this book is also very thrilling and suspenseful, after Jenkins death the squad realizes that their lives are about to get way worse than they would've imagined. The main part of the novel is set in the jungle of Vietnam which is very rainy and wet. Even though this is the main setting Perry often talks about his home back in Harlem. Perry used to live in the slums, which were neglected and poverty–stricken as he says on page 14, "How was I going to get clothes for Kenny so he would stay in school? Mama had said that she'd see to it that Kenny stayed in school if I sent the money for clothes for him." (pg.14) So clearly Richie's mom was not bringing in much money so Richie had to provide for the family. In Vietnam it rained almost everyday and was mucky and grimy. The squad was placed in Chu Lai which was proficient and very intensive. At Chu Lai they went out on patrols, and on one of them Jenkins lost his life giving the rest of the people in the squad their first look at death. Then they had to move to Tam Ky, which was not as proficient and was less state–of–the–art. We keep our kind safe and hidden from normal society and in return, the government doesn't go rooting us out of existence.
