Father-Son Relationships in the Oddysey Essay
Father–Son Relationships in The Odyssey "Be careful to leave your sons well instructed rather than rich, for the hopes of the instructed are better than the wealth of the ignorant." This quote, stated by Epictetus, is an ideal depiction of the importance of father–son relationships in Homer's ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey. The protagonist of The Odyssey,Odysseus, fights among the other Greek heroes at Troy and struggles to return to his kingdom in Ithaca where his loyal wife, Penelope, and his loving son, Telemachus await. Telemachus is an infant when Odysseus leaves for Troy, leaving him alone with his concerned mother and her arrogant suitors. In father–son relationships, both fathers and sons provide and learn from each other while...show more content...
Laertes was not only the King of Ithaca at the time but also raised Odysseus to be the most powerful, cunning, well–venerated man in all of ancient Greece. Odysseus' success was the result of an effectual father–son relationship. Many of the examples of father–son relationships result in the son gaining valuable information to progress from an ignorant boy into a well educated man. In addition to father–son relationships providing for sons, father–son relationships also provide for the fathers. Odysseus failing to father Telemachus causes Odysseus to lack self– control, responsibility, and modesty. For example, Odysseus' hubristic nature causes him to unnecessarily raid the island of the Cicones. From this example, it is clear that Odysseus lacks self–control and modesty due to the lack of fathering of Telemachus. While in the Land of the Dead, Odysseus replies to Achilles' joy upon hearing of his son's successes, "So I said and off he went, the ghost of the great runner, Aecus' grandson loping with long strides across the fields of asphodel, triumphant in all I had told him of his son, his gallant, glorious son" (267). This quote was Achilles's exultant reaction to his son, Neoptolemus, being a valiant fighter in battle. As from this quote, it is apparent that sons not only provide to fathers a sense of responsibility but also instill great pride in their father's hearts. Yet another instance where sons

The writer used many ways to show the relatioships between charcters in the stories we have studies one of them is Anil. in Anil the writer presents confilct in relationship between the father, Appa, and the son, Anil. Anil is very uncomfortable and scared with his father, we know this because in the story it says " his father was a burly man, a bully to his family" this explains that the relationship between the father and the son is unsual and unsafe. the word "Bully" is used to show negativity and the harmful relationship between Anil and Father. 'Drinking it in: the essence of Dadness'. This metaphor shows just how much the son idolises and loves his father, implying that he wants to absorb as much as possible of him, perhaps due to lack of contact in previous years. From the phrase; 'essence of Dadness', we are presented with a feeling that the boy probably has missed having a fatherly figure next to him, displaying their strange and alien relationship through the story.Further into the story, we realise the importance of the torch for the family, especially the boy, in emitting hope that somehow they might rebuild their broken relationship. The boy treasures the symbolic possession, stating it is for 'lighting up the expedition of father and son'. This hopeful sentence evokes sympathy in the reader at how he is desperately trying to convince himself that all is well in their relationship. The sentence could either literally mean that he values the use of a torch, or when looking deeper, we see the boy hopes it might magically rebuild bonds with his father and guide his way.Elizabeth Baines uses character gestures to show the tense relationship felt between the boy's mother and father. After describing the man's uselessness in being a good father, we are told the mum has 'a choke in her voice' and 'a kind of snarl' suggesting his actions have made her emotional with anger and worry.
From this description, we get the idea that their relationship did not end on a

Okonkwo despises his father to an extent that Okonkwo strives to be nothing like Unoka. Okonkwo lives his life and his goal is to be one of the high lords of the clan (Achebe 131). Okonkwo's life goal is to be the opposite of his father, who is seen as a failure in the Ibo society. Unlike his father who did not fulfill the community's ideals of success Okonkwo did, and strives to achieve his whole life to prove that he was not similar to his father, because he does not want to be like someone who he despises. Similarly to Okonkwo, Nwoye does not have a good relationship with his father, because Nwoye does not act like him. Nwoye Knew that he should act violent like his father, but he preferred to be with his mother and listen to stories (Achebe 53). From a young age Nwoye knew he did not want to be like his father, because he did not approve of the way Okonkwo acts thus he rebelled by being like his mother and preferring kindness and stories over violence. Besides not wanting to be violent like his father, Nwoye rebels by converting to christianity. Nwoye converts, changes his name to Isaac and goes to college to become a teacher (Achebe 182). Nwoye converting and changing his name is the ultimate rebellion because he literally changes everything Okonkwo tried to make Nwoye. Okonkwo attempted to make Nwoye a strong man in the eyes of Ibo society just it in turn made Nwoye rebel and turn

Biological Model Of Father Son Relationship
A boy who shared a close relationship with his father now hates, and refuses to speak to him. He did everything in his adolescent years to bond with his father. The boy had to other siblings, but neither was as close to the father as the boy who now lashes out towards him. Where did this all spiral down, how could a close and healthy relationship between a father and son go as sour as it did? The father never changed in his ways, but the boy lost contact with what was real and what was made up in his mind. The clinical therapies view the boy's issues in different insights of what could have been the underlying reason. The biological model noticed that the boy had different events that occurred in his life that could have onset the behaviors and psychological issues he developed. During this time he lashed out, and even was peer pressured into trying drugs for the first time. They noticed during his teenage years that he spoke of hallucinations well past the time of being under the influence of drugs. He would even started going on rants about current events coming up with jumbled up arguments about topics, and never coming to any conclusion to make sense to the person he was trying to explain it to. When the biological therapist did a study on the boy, they noticed he had a previous relative that also would talk about...show more content...

The boy felt he was doing much better, and even began to start having a communicative relationship with his father

Robert Hayden's poem describes the relationship between a father and a son by speaking about what occurs on Sundays during the winter. It's filled with dark words such as "blueblack," "cold splintering," "chronic angers," and "lonely (offices)" to describe the narrator's father and the atmosphere around his house. The father seems to give off a feeling of regret and tiredness, could be with his life or the position he is in at the moment. Right off the bat, the man the narrator describe reminded me of my grandfather. A lovable and caring man but often caught with a straight face and came across in a harsh, strict manner. And just like the narrator comes across, I thought he wasn't the kind man everyone saw him as. I thought of him as a hard

"Connecting with someone is not necessarily a bond with a significant other, or even a friend, but can be the indefinable – perhaps the rarest and most precious thing in life to find at all" –Donna Lynn Hope. Similar to Henry's other relationships, Henry and Keiko face difficulties and opposition in their friendship. Henry is a Chinese American and Keiko is a Japanese American during a time of great tension in America, yet they found a way to make their relationship prosper. They overcame many obstacles to sow the seeds of friendship, but eventually the Japanese internment camps and Henry's father's prejudices prevailed over their meager bond. "'We're more than friends. We're the same people. But he doesn't see it–he only sees you as a daughter of the enemy–he's disowned me'" (193). Henry faces the truth as he speaks to Keiko through the chain link fence of the Japanese internment camps. This relationship with Keiko shapes Henry almost completely into the person he is. He becomes more daring and defiant because of how he his parents handled the situation. It also appears that Henry realizes how the world works, understanding that things don't always go well, but one must make the most of things. "Every father should remember that one day his son will follow his example instead of his advice." This quote by Charles F Kettering embodies what a father son relationship really is. A father is someone a son looks up to, whether in a good or bad light depends on the situation. Father son relationships can take two paths, one where the son does everything the father hates and the others were the son does everything the father does. Fathers play a major role in their son's life with examples of the relationship found throughout the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe in the characters of Okonkwo, Nwoye and Unoka. For better or worse Unoka played a major role in Okonkwo's life. "It was fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father." (Achebe 13). Throughout the entirety of Okonkwo's life, his relationship with his father would affect his decisions which were always based on the question, "Would my father do this?", and if he would he would do the opposite. Okonkwo viewed his father as a failure and did not want to even be seen as being related to him. Okonkwo got this impression at a young age, "Even as a young boy he resented his father's failure and weaknesses ..." (Achebe 13). The lessons that Okonkwo got from...show more content...
Okonkwo took all of the feelings of how he felt about his father and made sure to teach his son the right way unlike his father. (Achebe 13) Okonkwo's constant shows of how a man should be really had the opposite effect on Nwoye. Nwoye developed into a boy that resembled his father in the way he acted, and that bothered Okonkwo. The relationship between Okonkwo and Nwoye shows that not only does the father son relationship affect the son it also affects his son and so

Relationship Between Father And Son
The function of a father might be a difficult assignment when raising a son. The suitable relationship among father and son perhaps can be; the father sets the regulations and the son obeys them respectfully. However it's quite hard to balance a healthy relationship between father and son, because of what a father expects from his son. as an example inside the narratives, "Death of a Salesman," and "Fences" both Willie and Troy are fathers who have a hard time in earning admire from their sons, and being a good role model for them. Between, "Death of a Salesman," and "Fences," both protagonists, Willie and Troy both portray the role of a father in very exclusive ways; but in times of trouble, Willie is the more empathetic one.
In evaluating Willie and Troy, as fathers, one person can feel more empathy in Willie for his everlasting struggle to maintain a home. Willie is alone when it comes to making important payments, due to the fact Willie's sons, Happy and Biff, cannot hold their jobs. It's obvious that Biff can not hold a job, and has no longer made any money properly; consequently, Willies struggle to make payments for the house has been hard.
On the other hand, Troy, the protagonist in the narrative, "Fences" also has the obligation of taking care of a home. However, in contrast to Willie, Troy had assistance in paying for his home when he obtained a check from the government. Troy obtained the check when his brother Gabriel, became injured at a war. It is said that a father and son's bond is unbreakable, that one's father is his first hero. Small moments between a father and his son can not only shape their character, but also their relationship. This is also portrayed throughout the novel, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, where the miscommunications and bonds between a father and his son and how this can change one's character completely. Hosseini uses this novel to further demonstrate that even though a relationship between a father and his son may start off rough, through time and progression, the broken bond between a father and a son may be able to be recovered. This is demonstrated when Baba and Amir are not able to connect and have the father–son bond they need, when this bond is finally gained, and when Baba passes away. Every child, especially in their younger ages craves the attention of their parents, the same way Amir does with Baba. In the beginning of the novel, Amir seeks for his father's approval andlove, which is needed by every child. One of the main father and son examples in this novel is Baba and Amir's dysfunctional relationship. Near the beginning of the novel, it is evident that Baba expects more from his son and wants him to live up to the expectations of a high class member of society. Also since Baba is known to be very well respected, he expects his son to be like him in terms of bravery, physical and social expectations. However, Amir is not able to live up to Baba's expectations,

Relationship Between Father And His Son Essay
The relationship between a father and his son is one of the most important things in life. Also, it is not solely filled with love but one that can create pain and the sense of longing. This relationship assists in making a boy recognize right from wrong. Normally in life, we look up to our father to be the care taker and to encourage us to make our own decisions on what is right and what is wrong. The relationship between a father and his son can be articulated as the most significant relationship that a man can has throughout the duration of his life. Through this essay I would like to prove the importance of father son relationship, and how it is illustrated in the novel "When the emperor was divine". Fathers play an important role in the lives of their sons. The male model may add to a boy's understanding of manhood, and it may also help to create a power connection in the relationship. The things every boy needs from his dad is helping learn the importance of father in the healthy development. If a father is nurturing, loving, strong, self– controlled and honorable, his son will emulate those qualities. However, if this father is emotionally distant, preoccupied, and uninterested, he will also learn those qualities. The relationship between father and son is based on respect, understanding, trust and concern. It can build a good connection with the teenagers spending more time together, keeping promise, joking and appreciating their efforts and strengths. Teenagers

Father/Son Relationships During the Holocaust
The Holocaust was a terrifying event that lasted for over 12 years and brought the deaths of about six million Jews. The main cause of death was the concentration camps that the Nazis set up throughout Europe. There, Jews and other minorities were gassed, cremated, shot, and forced to work. Elie Wiesel, author of the memoir Night, was one of the few Jews that survived the Holocaust. In Night, he writes about the harrowing experience of being deported from his home country to a concentration camp, where he and his father are separated from his mother and sister. Although they hadn't been close before the deportation, Wiesel and his father are left with only each other to rely on, and they endure...show more content...

Wiesel so strongly hates to think that one day he should ditch his father, that he prays to God, a being in which he no longer even believes. Later on in their journey to Buchenwald, an old man is beaten to death by his own son, for merely a small piece of bread. The son is unable to eat all of it before he, too, is killed. Wiesel remarks, "When they withdrew, next to me were two corpses, side by side, the father and the son" (Wiesel 96). THE FATHER–SON RELATIONSHIP
In family life, there is often a lack of communication between parents and their children. Although parental love is always present, children often misunderstand or are unaware of their parent's love for them, especially the father's love. Fathers often try to keep their strong figure as the head of the households and their love is usually implicit. The three short stories, "Penny in the Dust," by Ernest Buckler, "A Secret Lost in the Water," by Roch Carrier and "Lies My Father Told Me," by Ted Allan all share a similar theme– relationship between fathers and sons. The father–son relationship portrayed in each of these three stories is awkward and distant which...show more content...
Peter has mixed emotions when he sees the bright, shiny and new penny. He realizes that his father had never forgotten that day; the two of them sitting together in the sand and expressing their love for each other. Ultimately, this story reveals that love is not always expressed verbally. The penny is the symbol of love and dream between Peter and his father. In the second story, "A Secret Lost in the Water," written by Roch Carrier, who is also the protagonist of this short story. He explores the importance of tradition in relation to formal 'schoolbook' knowledge. His father was an expert in finding fresh water source by using a mere alder branch. His father also tried to pass this skill to his son; however, as the son grows up and become old, the son forgets the life lesson he was once taught. When he is given an opportunity to remember the talent passed down by his father in his early childhood, he struggles to perform the secret. As he struggles to hear the gushing water and the branch to writhe, a fellow farmer says, "Nowadays, fathers can't pass on anything to the next generation." This quote is very powerful, because it directly points to the moral of the story: not all fathers can pass talents to the sons. In addition, the farmer too experiences this reality, for he has the finest farm in the area, and his children did not want to inherit the farm which their father spent his whole life

Personal Narrative: My Father Son Relationships
When I was younger something awful happened to me. I changed schools and I started dating a boy from my new school. Later I would find out that I was almost 4 months pregnant. It started out all innocently enough. We met when I changed schools. He was my first serious boyfriend. His name was David. In most plays, family relations are considered to be the key to the creation of the plot of the story. Through the family relationships which are created in most literary works, the conflicts existing in the story can be easily exposed. The various characters in the literary works usually play different roles in relationship to each other's lives. In death of a sales man, Arthur miller elaborates more of the emotional and physical connection of the father and the son in the play (Gale). Willy Loman and his sons are able to interact in various ways and that helps in showing the conflicts existing within them. The relationship existing between Willy and biff is filled with tension. The father and the sons in the story have different views concerning life. Biff started his life while keeping the American dream vision adopted from his father. Willy was a football star and he believed that was enough to be an American dream (Miller). When the respect biff had for his father was shattered, the vision of the American dream is also shattered along. Biff stumbles severally and this disappointed Willy always. This shows that the relationship existing between the father and the son is not good enough. The father and the son relationship is distorted in the play because Biff and Willy start resenting each other. Willy is resented by biff because he dillusioned him and input a lot of pressure on him. On the other hand, Willy started resenting biff because he did not live Get

Father–Son Relationship in "Reunion"
As children we look up to our parents as role models, it is universal that we have the need to have them in our lives, to feel loved by them. They are the people who should be responsible for our upbringing and in molding the way we are to be as adults. The role of a parent is not just providing food and shelter but also providing a good example. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. There are parents who for one reason or another are not there for their children, parents who do not set the right example to their kids. In the story "Reunion" by John Cheever we see a perfect example of how a father does not step up to his role as a parent and the effect it has on his son. We see the need of...show more content...
The question of why Charlie himself did not put a stop to this is definite in the reader's eyes. We may conclude, with the information given in the exposition that Charlie knew he had the option of never seeing his father again. The train could symbolize that this encounter with his father was a В‘quick stop' in his journey in life. By not reacting with the same negative energy and by avoiding confrontation we see the growth in Charlie. "I was terribly happy to see him again" (p207) "I hoped that someone would see us together. I wished that we could be photographed. I wanted some record of our having been together." Relationship Between Fathers and Sons Essay
Both poems "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke and "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden are poems in which the speaker (a son in both cases) attempts to explain his complex relationship with his father. It seems that the two poets are reflecting back in their early lives as young boys and showing different appreciation toward their father. In my interpretation "My Papa's Waltz" is about aboy and that is excited that his father got home to play with him. Only problem is the speakers father is drunk and it hard to enjoy himself but he held on because the unconditional love he has for him, as the line says "The Whiskey on your breath / could make a boy dizzy; / But I hung like death: " (1–2–3). The impression that I get from "My Papa's Waltz" is that the boy's father is an alcoholic and irresponsible. I say this because as the father and the boy were playing around in the kitchen The unconscious father could of drop a hot pan that the mother could have been cooking on and cause serious damage. That to me shows that the father don't really think about the possibilities. On the contrary "Those Winter Sundays" "Sundays too my father got up early" (1) shows that the father is a hard workingman, that everyday of the week he is up early "with cracked hands that ached / from labor in the weekday weather made" (3–4). The speaker's father is a man that did hard labor to keep heat in the house and also made sure his son was looking sharp for example, "polished my good shoes as well" (12). Overall he was very responsible and loving even though the speaker didn't think so at the time seeing that he didn't show appreciation and "no one ever thanked him" (5). When it comes to the mood the speakers portray different attitudes towards their fathers. In "My Papa's Waltz the speakers mood is positive while the poet reflect back negatively and in "Those Winter Sundays" the speaker attitude is like whatever and negative while the poet also reflect back an realizes that his father was a

Relationship Between Father And Son
The relationship between a father and son take center stage in two unique poems that center on family situations. Each poem is a snapshot in time that exhibits striking similarities and vast differences in the interaction between father and son. For instance, "My Papa's Waltz" from Theodore Roethke, clearly demonstrates a fun loving father that really enjoys his liquor. To his wife's chagrin, he truly lives in the moment and loves to rough house with his young son.
"Those Winter Sundays' from Robert Hayden, showcases a no nonsense, hard man that appears to be void of happiness or fun. He takes life very seriously and expects the same of his young son. There is no mention of a wife or mother in the poem which adds a seriousness tone and cold emotional void between them.
On the surface it appears that there is nothing in common between each poem until you look a bit deeper. The stories reflect alove between a father and his son through trying times in life and each father's inability to show the emotion. The expression of love rings differently for each son, but the emotion is front and center throughout the story. While the fathers play the main characters in both poems, each take a very different approach with their child. The stories are told through the son's point of view. In both poems the son's actions and reactions are different on the surface, but showcase love at the core. Father/Son Relationships in Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part One
The relationship between a father and his son is an important theme in Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part One, as it relates to the two main characters of the play, Prince Hal and Hotspur. These two characters, considered as youths and future rulers to the reader, are exposed to father–figures whose actions will influence their actions in later years. Both characters have two such father–figures; Henry IV and Falstaff for Prince Hal, and the Earl of Northumberland and the Earl of Worcester for Hotspur. Both father–figures for Hal and Hotspur have obvious good and bad connotations in their influence on the character. For example, Falstaff, in his drinking and reveling,...show more content... All the relationships are tested as they are put into the intolerable situation. Especially, Elie Wiesel and his father, Chlomo. When individuals are put into a very tough situation to choose between love or violence, loving bonds are put to the test to see if they can survive. For example, a guy forgot about humanity and killed his own father for a piece of bread to survive. When people are being treated like objects instead of human beings and being mistreated for so long, this proves that some people are capable of sinking to the depths of brutality.
