EXHIBITIONS

THE STILL POINT

Tue 9 Jan - Fri 1 Mar

An exhibition of new work by Ione Harrison and Pamela Thorby “Through the act of looking at-or in the process of making-art, we can find a place of stillness – a calm reflection for our busy minds. We invite you to take a moment to join us in a journey inspired by the energy and serenity of the natural world.” Ione Harrison is a landscape painter and teacher whose atmospheric images are inspired by North Yorkshire landscapes. By turns dramatic or serene, her art captures the ever-changing light and mood of moor, hill, woodland and coastline. She incorporates rich colours with strong textures to create atmospheric landscape interpretations. Pamela Thorby is a ceramicist who has swapped her distinguished career in music for a new path in craftsmanship, making and firing her unique wheel thrown and handbuilt ceramics in her own studio. Playing with gesture, rhythm and form, Pamela’s development as a maker continues with recent sculptural and functional work reflecting her improvisational and imaginative abilities. Ione and Pamela share a studio space and gallery at Nunnington Studios, YO62 5UR, which is open Thursday to Sunday, 10-4, March to December. Bookable Teaching sessions available throughout the year. Commissions welcome.

Check our website for exhibition opening times. Closed Monday & Saturday. 6

EXHIBITIONS

ANNA-MARIE MAGSON

Tue 5 Nov - Fri 3 May

Beneath The Layers Anna-Marie originally studied Fine Art Painting at Liverpool College of Art. Initially working with clay, exploring surface decoration and textured pattern on tiles and panels, she developed her art in the form of hand-built ceramics. Latterly, she has returned her focus to 2-dimensions, expanding her practice to encompass collage, printmaking and painting. Anna-Marie’s work reflects her long-standing love of both printed textiles and quilt designs and mid-20thC modern art. Using predominantly collage techniques, her cut-out abstract shapes are layered to build harmonious and balanced compositions. Texture is achieved through the addition of various handmade and found papers, while pattern and detail are introduced by means of drawing, print and painting. Her subdued palette, inspired initially by artefacts from ancient cultures, rock art and mark-making, and hues found in nature, is enlivened by glimpses of bolder, more vibrant colour. Blacks are frequently used to contrast with and define greens, ochres, terracottas or blues that emerge from the mostly restrained, earthy tones. Anna-Marie works from her home studio in York, where she continues to create her ceramics alongside her artwork, and has exhibited and sold through various shows and galleries across the UK.

A new play by James Graham | directed by Rupert Goold Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) plays Gareth Southgate in James Graham’s (Sherwood) gripping examination of nation and game. The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game? With the worst track record for penalties in the world, Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt, to take team and country back to the promised land. Filmed live on stage at the National Theatre, Rupert Goold (Judy) directs this spectacular new play.

TALKS

AN AUDIENCE WITH HENRY BLOFELD Sat 16 Mar.

7.30pm

£27

Widely respected as the voice of Test Match Special ‘Blowers’, Henry Blofeld brings his wit and wisdom to the stage once again. Henry’s keen to stress though that it’s not all cricket, in fact most of it isn’t and that every show is different. So, even if you’ve been before you can be sure that it’ll never be the same twice. Instead, the talk is based, in the loosest sense, on Henry’s life story, although there’s time for as many after-dinner anecdotes and meandering digressions as there is in a Test Match Special rain break. The show itself is very tongue-in-cheek and Henry spends a lot of time poking fun at himself and subjects veer from intergalactic travel, to horticulture to mountaineering. Audiences are always sure of an evening of great tales from this quintessential Englishman. Presented in association with Clive Conway Productions
