STEPHEN BIRD
THREE APPROACHES TO RELIEF PRINTING BY ALISON DIAMOND, ADE ADESINA RSA AND IAN BURKE.
Stephen G Bird is an artist living in North Yorkshire who works in a variety of painting and drawing media. His pictures begin with extensive observational drawing in urban and rural landscapes. Back in the studio he creates pictorial and allegorical narratives from memory and imagination.
Tue 7 May – Fri 28 Jun
Three separate approaches to relief printing but a shared love of hand made printing, Lino cutting and woodcut. The mark of the gouge or the dot of the drill is the indication that a human has been involved with the creation and mark making of this image. In some cases it is a collaborative effort in mixing up the drawing and the mark making technique of two individuals. It is definitely not digital imagery however, this is what we prefer.
Themes include tales from myth and legend, and the comedy and tragedy of the everyday.
Life is dark but also funny.
www.sgbirdart.com @stephen_bird_art
Ade Adesina RSA, a Nigerian living in Aberdeen, has won the annual prize 2023 of the Academies des beaux-arts. Ian Burke and Alison Diamond produce work in regional galleries and print fairs. The connection between all three is the use of relief print to achieve something personal and produce multiple images.
Anna’s work explores the powerful spiritual resonance of historical sacred buildings and their setting in the landscape. She loves combining the representational imagery of soaring monumental structures of ancient abbeys and churches with the intricate and complex patterns and rhythms of their decorative features.
Sally and Lyn both work from their studios on the North Yorkshire Moors, finding inspiration every day from the vast landscapes and varied wildlife on their doorstep, and transforming them into paintings and lino prints.
Sally has lived and worked on the North York Moors since 1970. Having trained at Leeds College of Art and the Royal College in London in both Fine art and Printmaking, she moved back to Yorkshire and worked as a designer for Liberty of London while pursuing a career in teaching. Since retiring from teaching she now spends more time in her studio producing paintings and prints, the subjects of which are drawn from music and literature, and woven together with images from the local landscape.
Using etching and collagraph printmaking techniques and a colourful palette, I seek to bring to life the powerful geometry of the often faded motifs and timeworn patterns and symbols of historic artefacts found in the masonry and ancient tiles of these sacred sites. My final prints explore and record the dynamic rhythms of three-dimensional architectural form, layered with their decorative and symbolic adornment in a graphic expression of awe and wonder.
Lyn’s training as a graphic designer has allowed her to transfer the skills of using simple block colour and shapes to the more tactile process of printmaking.
Fundamentally each print begins with a simple walk, observing and connecting with her surroundings from the heart of the landscape.

An honest and truthful reflection on what it means to have an older parent and the questions we need to ask, but rarely get the chance to. This funny and tender one - woman show was drawn from workshops with women that asked, “What would you like to ask or have asked your mother?”. It reflects Michele’s own lived experiences with her 91 year old Mother, Gena (represented by a life-sized puppet) and the impact that her mother’s dementia had on both of their lives. Through a truly personal and generous piece of storytelling theatre, Michele O’Brien explores the joys, heartaches, shared memories, love and conflict that binds generations together to convey a universal tale for all to enjoy.
We often hear people say, “If only I asked!” when a parent is no longer with us and Michele was determined to take the many opportunities she had to share with her mother, to change that.

AN AUDIENCE WITH ARTHUR SMITH
Sun 27 Oct 7.30pm £24
Often described as the compère beyond compare, but before becoming a fully-fledged playwright, panellist, performer and stalwart of the Edinburgh Festival, Arthur worked as a road sweeper, dustman, market researcher, teacher and advertised chicken burgers in supermarkets dressed as a fox. A career in comedy was the only one that could follow a build up like that. He was one of many stand-up performers on the alternative comedy scene in the Eighties. Twenty years on he still performs in much the same manner, perhaps ironically, he now describes himself as a “semi-professional” comedian. To BBC radio and TV audiences, his career has been split between appearing on top quiz shows and fronting the funny section in Loose Ends. On TV, he’s been a regular Grumpy Old Man and Countdown wordsmith. His plays include the award-winning An Evening with Gary Lineker, My Summer with Des and The Bed Show. He has presented Radio 4’s Excess Baggage and Radio 2’s The Smith Lectures and is a regular guest on Loose Ends. He describes himself as Radio 4’s “bit of rough”.
