Where: V&A Waterfront, Cape town What to expect: Cape Town’s much anticipated Time Out Market is set to hit the scene on 17 November 2023, opening its doors to the public at the V&A Waterfront from 11:00. This food and cultural market will bring the best of the city together under one roof: It’s best chefs, drinks and cultural experiences. This is the first Time Out Market to open on the African continent, featuring a mix of thirteen home-grown culinary concepts spanning many cultural influences and flavours. From the 17th of November, this market will be open daily with the official times being Sunday to Wednesday from 11:00 to 22:00 and Thursday to Saturday from 11:00 to 23:00.

What to expect: The Durban City Orchestra and the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre brings classical comedy to the South Coast this festive season, with a short ten performance run from 22 November to 3 December. The production will build on from last year’s inaugural season, with a reprise of many of the fabulous sketches and tunes, as well as some exciting new ones. Aaron Mcilroy and Lisa Bobbert boldy tread where no right-minded comedian ever would: In the sacred space of The Orchestra. They migrate from Bach to Beethoven…to Bedlam. It’s a musical celebration fit for the whole family, guaranteed to make you chuckle to Tchaikovsky.

Classical Comedy Striking a Chord

Where: Pieter Toerien’s Studio Theatre at Montecasino
What to expect: The CoLab Network, in association with AEJ Music, presents Striking a Chord, starring Adrian and Emma-Jean Galliard, with musical direction by Neil Bennett for three shows this November. It follows a successful tour of England in August 2023, and their debut show, Accidently Viral, staged around South Africa in 2022. The father-daughter duo’s bond is palpable as they take their audiences on an awe-inspiring musical journey.

Festival of Lights
Where: Joburg Zoo
What to expect: It’s that time of year again where Joburg Theatre in association with Joburg City Parks and Zoo and Joburg City Power bring Christmas-lovers the annual Joburg Festival of Lights. There will be an enchanting collection of illuminated life-sized animal characters and classical, harmonious entertainment, as well as a food and craft night market. The festival will be open to patrons from 19:00 to 22:00 from Thursdays through to Sundays, offering you the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing stroll on a designated lit route away from the zoo’s animals. Let the enchanting lights light up your Christmas spirit this year. Children under the age of three can enter for free.

The Sound of Music

What to expect: Together with Cape Town Opera, Pieter Toerien is presenting the much-anticipated revival tour of the world’s most-loved musical: The Sound of Music. The show will open in Cape Town at the Artscape Theatre, whereafter it will transfer to Joburg at The Teatro at Montecasino. The Sound of Music marks the 11th and final collaboration between legendary lyricists, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and features numerous popular show tunes, including My favourite things, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Do Re Mi, Sixteen Going on Seventeen and more.

What to expect: Local musical theatre and international entertainer, Jonathan Roxmouth is returning to the Teatro at Montecasino after five years, this time with the highly acclaimed nineteen-piece Johannesburg Big Band, conducted by Adam Howard. Jonathan and the band will be joined onstage by special guest artists Timothy Moloi and Monique Steyn, as well as the children’s vocal ensemble from Stageworx School of Performing Arts.
