SHOP IT like it’s cold How to curate your autumn wardrobe

By this time of year, the heat of summer is nothing but a memory and hitting the rails in search of some new fall sweaters is at the top of every Joburger’s mind – or at least ours. That’s why we’ve rounded up some fabulous tips and tricks for shopping for your seasonal wardrobe. Preparation is everything While autumn may not seem like the best time for spring cleaning and decluttering, we could argue that it’s also a new beginning and should be treated as such. So, before you head off to your nearest mall, give your closet a clean out and take stock of what you already have for the upcoming winter months. It’s also a great idea to pack your summer clothes into storage so that you can put your cold-weather clothes front and centre. We know that Jozi’s winter can be quite warm so don’t pack layering pieces like your vests and T-shirts away, but those flops on the other hand can wait to be worn again next summer. Organisation is something else you need to be aware of when arranging your cupboard, as winter items tend to take up more space than summer ones. Get a game plan

To trend or not to trend?

Different weather patterns aren’t the only thing the new season is bringing. Of course, there’s also a myriad of new trends that can further complicate the act of shopping for your new wardrobe. Our advice? Incorporate trends you like through accessories. We say trends that you like because it’s 2020 and you really shouldn’t be following trends unless you’re legitimately into them. Hats, scarfs and gloves are a great way to tie in said trends without having to splurge on that rainbow coloured trench coat or see-through bag – or whatever else it is that’s the current flavour of the month. We’re not knocking all trends though: We do have to admit that we’re loving the cardigan trend for men and the white boot trend for women! Hello Joburg • April 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Once you’ve taken cognisance of what your wardrobe is missing, you should also decide what you’d like to invest in and what you’d prefer to go budget on. Pieces like coats, jumpers and boots are great items to invest in as you’ll be able to wear them year after year. Materials like leather and cashmere are also guaranteed to last a long, long time if you take care of them. Again, layering pieces are essential because Jozi’s colder months can be unpredictable and by midday you may be ready to shed a few layers. Try to buy versatile items that can be dressed up or down and will make for easy outfits, as the colder weather doesn’t afford us the luxury of being able to stand in front of the wardrobe stark naked deciding what to wear.
