CARNIVORE GOURMET MEATS When thinking about meat, what generally comes to mind? A sizzling, succulent, fillet steak? Braaied, crispy chops? A slow roasted Oxtail or delicious, juicy boerewors? Well these are certainly the connotations that come to mind. However, it seemed we were in for a staggering sur¬prise when being offered an excur¬sion to The Carnivore Butchery.

THE DAILY BUZZ COFFEE HOUSE Certainly in South Africa, consumers are in¬creasingly prepared to try out new and more sophisticated options. That’s according to Chris Brown, Director at The Daily Buzz, a local chain of upmarket workplace cof¬fee bars.

@ THE MOVIES

In Cinemas From 8 March 2013 TO THE POWER OF ANNE Nationwide Cinemas

6

As one of South Africa’s best-known theatre personalities, Anne Power explores what it means to turn 50 and be sidelined in a brave, original and hysterically funny new film To The Power of Anne. The film falls into the faux-reality genre as she strives to remain relevant in this ever changing industry where so much emphasis is placed on youth. With a reality television crew following her every move, we are given a glimpse into Power’s life and the lengths to which she goes in an effort to remain centre stage. But with reality, comes truth, and sometimes truth can be both harrowing and painful, given the harsh world of show business. Power’s journey is bold and very funny and takes us down that all too familiar path of the aging process. The themes Power struggles with are universal to so many women the world over; money, lost fame, and the fear of aging and feeling irrelevant, however the film always treads water between humour and pathos. EXPERIENCE ROMANCE WITH ANDREA BOCELLI IN NU METRO CINEMAS THIS VALENTINE’S DAY Andrea Bocelli: Love In Portofino In Select Nu Metro Cinemas From February 14th Andrea Bocelli, the world’s most beloved tenor, is making his cinema debut this Valentine’s Day, as his new Love In Portofino concert is released for a limited engagement at cinemas around the world and exclusively at select Nu Metro Cinemas in South Africa (Montecasino, Bedford Centre & Hyde Park in Johannesburg, Menlyn Park in Pretoria, Pavilion in Durban and the V&A Waterfront & Canal Walk in Cape Town).

CARNIVORE GOURMET MEATS Optimising and promoting the use of our natural resources

W

hen thinking about meat, what generally comes to mind? A sizzling, succulent ,fillet steak? Braaied, crispy chops? A slow roasted Oxtail or delicious, juicy boerewors? Well these are certainly the connotations that come to mind. However, it seemed we were in for a staggering surprise when being offered an excursion to The Carnivore Butchery. So, never entering a butchery before, a grouping of apprehension and uncertainty lay in the air, while still attempting to keep an open mind. The first aspect which was startling was the cleanliness of the entire place. crisp white tiles and sparkling floors, dirt-free work spaces and basins, sanitary fridges and shelves, spotless crooks and corners. The entire butchery was 100% hygienic! Another aspect which could not be ignored was the smell in the air. Immediately the smell of fresh, natural, raw

and authentic meat enveloped the atmosphere. The smell seemed to charge the imagination on what was to come next... Entering the fridges where the animal carcasses hung was initially quite daunting but the process is very intricate, well managed and elaborate that one certainly holds a respect for the method. It becomes an education on how the piece of meat at your favourite restaurant essentially gets onto your plate. It is highly fascinating and intriguing; after all, should we not be concerned about what exactly we are putting into our own bodies? Thus the process was an educational, informative and enlightening one. The meat we eat is cultivated, nourished and nurtured into becoming a heavenly, titillating, well-seasoned, well- prepared piece of steak on a plate. Furthermore, being wonderfully amazed by the procedure of Butchery, what seemed more surprising was the emphasis on Game meat! This is what the owners of The

Carnivore Butcher had to say: “We aim to have Game meat on the table of every South African household, at least once a week. We take pride in the contribution we make to promote sustainable game farming and conservation. We believe in optimising and promoting the use of our natural resources, and believe that the time is right to further promote game meat to the discerning public in an effort to meet the needs of the ever-increasing health conscious and ecologically-aware consumer market” And just to add to that, having tasted the Game meat at The Carnivore Butchery, it was an explosion of flavours in your mouth and was a mouth-watering alternative to beef, lamb or pork. In addition to the Carnivore Gourmet Meats, also available within the development are: liquor stores, bakeries and restaurants to compliment the meat products. The whole development is situated in Boekenhoutfontein, between Boshoek and Phokenge and is a part of the Recreation Africa Group. The

Kedar is on the historic farm of President Paul Kruger and is populated with a large variety of game, including eland, blesbok, impala, bushbuck, nyala, kudu, zebra, blue wildebeest, giraffe, sable and two endangered pygmy hippos as well as an abundant bird life. THE DAILY BUZZ South African Coffee Predictions For 2013

I

N-HOUSE COFFEE ROASTERS AND THE RISE OF NEW BREWING METHODS:

As the world slowly and cautiously continues to come out of the recent global recession, so the sales of coffee, both locally and overseas, are continuing on an upward trend. World coffee exports amounted to 9.21 million bags in November 2012, compared with 7.88 million in November 2011. Certainly in South Africa, consumers are increasingly prepared to try out new and more sophisticated options. That’s according to Chris Brown, Director at The Daily Buzz, a local chain of upmarket workplace coffee bars. Brown comments, “We are seeing a change in the local coffee culture – people are becoming more discerning and aware when it comes to drinking coffee. More and more coffee drinkers have bean grinders at home – and not only coffee-making machines – which illustrates the growing shift away from drinking instant coffee in South Africa. As a country, we are in many respects still an ‘English colony’ of tea drinkers and the widespread consumption of premium coffee is still fairly new. I’d say that we’re still a few years behind the top coffee areas in the United States, though, when it comes to our coffee trends and what we’re offering and open to trying.” “…PEOPLE ARE BECOMING MORE DISCERNING AND AWARE WHEN IT COMES TO DRINKING COFFEE…” Having trained at the London School of Coffee, Chris Brown, together with his brother Andrew Brown, runs six different workplace coffee bars under the banner www.hellojoburg.co.za

of The Daily Buzz. They have been operational since 2006 and have built up a wealth of experience, both in running their venues as well as predicting what will and won’t work for their clients. Asked for his predictions on coffee trends in South Africa for 2013, Chris Brown believes we will see a continuing trend towards options that are perceived as being healthier, and also a rise of a number of different brewing methods. He clarifies, “Items like frozen yoghurt, which are perceived to be healthier ‘treat’ options, will become available on more and more menus. As far as coffee drinks go, some of the newer, more theatrical brewing methods, which bring out the best flavours in well-roasted coffee, will begin to gain popularity. Locally, espresso-based coffees - which refers to a method of brewing where pressurised hot water is forced through finely ground coffee - have dominated the menu boards of South African speciality coffee shops. However, I think that in 2013 we’ll see more and more alternative brewing methods being introduced. “For example, manual coffeemaking methods are becoming an increasingly popular option for home enthusiasts and coffee shop baristas alike. You’ll drink it black because it tastes so good! I believe we will also see more and more grinding of the beans on demand, as well as a steady increase in the demand for Fair Trade and organic coffee, even though it will still take up only a fraction of the market. Finally, I think we’ll continue to see some of the better independent coffee shops setting up their own in-house coffee roasters. A combination of the theatrics, smell and guaranteed freshness should help draw in more customers.” “YOU’LL DRINK IT BLACK BECAUSE IT TASTES SO GOOD!”

Asked on his ‘top five’ coffee capitals, Brown modestly replies that he wouldn’t like to give such a list, as he would still like to explore the coffee globe more widely, but clarifies, “Of the places I have been to, there are two that stand out above the rest. Firstly, Portland, Oregon, where the city has an intriguing quirkiness to it and the general level of the barista knowledge is way higher than anywhere I’ve seen in the world. Secondly, I give a nod to Turin, Italy, and not necessarily for the taste of the coffee, but rather their incredible coffee culture. There are tiny cafés everywhere.”

Back home, Brown comments that Cape Town seems to have become the ‘capital’ of the South African coffee scene. “I’m not sure I’d add it to a ‘top coffee capitals’ list just yet, but it definitely has a thriving coffee community, which is great to see. I believe that as time goes by, and South Africans continue to embrace a culture of good coffee, Cape Town could also become known around the globe for its coffee as well as its other famous tourist attractions,” he concludes. BANJAARA INDIAN RESTAURANT A Unique Restaurant, Which Offers Its Customers Delicious Indian Cuisine.

S

earching for the spice of life? Well then look no further than Banjaara Indian Restaurant. Established by Chef extraordinaire Balbir Singh in 2003, the Banjaara Indian Restaurant has quickly evolved into a unique restaurant, which offers its customers delicious Indian cuisine. There is a lot in a name. It helps define us, and Bobby, as Balbir Singh is affectionately known is no stranger to seeing his name in lights. The Banjaara name itself is rich in nomadic history, as the people wandered through North India enjoying life through explosive festivals and indulging

in celebrations, particularly in food preparations. Bobby likes to pass this celebratory experience onto his guests, ensuring they dine on only the most enthrallingly delicately blended proportions, hence creating dishes that present you with an unforgettable taste of decade old traditions. Who better to run a restaurant than a man who has worked as a chef? Bobby started is passion for all things spicy and rich in flavour when he worked as a chef at Sahib, which was located in Hillbrow in 1988 and opened he’s first restaurant in Fordsburg, which he called Shahmiyana.

start something new and magnificent, but still retain that truly Indian flair. The result was the Banjaara Indian Restaurant which aimed to bring authentic North Indian Cuisine to the greater South African public who had developed a rather fond desire for the exotic food.

Constantly trying to reach a new customer base and grow his business, he went on to open Shahmiyana branches in Edenvale on Van Riebeeck Street and Melville as well as Birnam on Corlett Drive.

The atmosphere at the restaurant might be unmatched, with traditional décor and a contemporary environment coinciding with the authentic cuisine - which is the real crowd pleaser. The menu has it all. The subtle tastes of flavours and varied dishes are sure to take you on a culinary adventure of the North. Besides leaving your mouth watering for more thanks to the rich fragrant of spices that fill the air, the specially prepared servings are rich in aroma leaving you with an exotic taste that also satisfies your hunger.

Looking for a new challenge, Bobby sold off these businesses and started a new chain of Indian restaurants called: Sahib Indian Restaurants, which he opened up in Northcliff, Rivonia, Illovo, Sandton, Norwood and Bryanston. But his craving for success didn’t stop there, Bobby then decided to

Bobby certainly knows how to explain its best, highlighting that “we make use of our exotic spices for their special flavours and aroma. Indian cooking is based on three major factors: the choice of ingredients, their proportions and quantities, and the sequence of cooking. So sit back, relax and

enjoy our North Indian Cuisine.” Catering for a large variety of functions, including weddings, birthday parties, corporate events and food on request, the Banjaara Indian Restaurant are always trying to give their customers that ultimate eating experience. So why not head down to the Banjaara Indian Restaurant and let your taste buds be enthralled, while you relax and enjoy the authentic scenery and de-stress with a lovely selection of beverages and wines. And if you’re lucky enough you might even get to meet your charismatic host Bobby. But one thing is for sure, the friendly and efficient staff at the Banjaara Indian Restaurant will make sure you are well taken care of and looked after during your dining experience. And don’t be shy to bring your loved ones who are a little frightened of the word “spicy”, because here, the curries are delicately spiced and should you want something “not so hot”, it will actually be “not so hot”. www.banjaarajhb.co.za By Curtis Tissen

EXHIBITION & EVENT CALENDAR FEBRUARY – 30 MARCH 2013 BEAUTIFUL BOATS Circa On Jellicoe, Rosebank 27 JANUARY – 10 FEBRUARY 2013 JOHANNESBURG INTERNATIONAL MOZART FESTIVAL Various Venues Around Johannesburg “Se vuol ballare, Signor Contino? – If you would dance, my little Count?”. This is what Figaro asks, somewhat belligerently, in his famous cavatina from Mozart’s opera The Marriage of Figaro. Translating Mozart’s creative spirit and constantly initiating new ideas, the 2013 Johannesburg International Mozart Festival picks up on the dance theme, and presents various concerts that fuse music and movement.

A number of choreography concerts take place at this year’s Festival, probing the art of improvisation through combined explorations of music and dance. Tickets for the 5th Johannesburg International Mozart Festival (JIMF) will be available from Computicket for concerts at the Linder Auditorium. Tickets for concerts at Northwards House, Villa Arcadia, St. Columba’s Church, and the Wits Art Museum can be booked by phoning the JIMF Office on (011) 447 9264; and for concerts at The Fringe at the Joburg Theatre, (011) 877 6832. For any further enquiries please contact (011) 447 9264 or visit www.join-mozart-festival.org. J oin the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival page on Facebook for regular updates on Festival happenings and competitions. 7 FEBRUARY 2013 MUSIC ART MASH-UP Amuse Café, 5th Street, Linden Sure, it’s a gig, but the line-up features a stone sculptor, an author and journalist as well as a poet...all playing acoustic unplugged tunes on guitar! Jon-Pat Myers, Hagen Engler and David Chislett get together at Amuse to present an unusual gathering of music and talk for your ears. Myers returned to South Africa two years ago after more than a decade globetrotting on the international stone-sculpture circuit. Jon-Pat will be playing a 30-minute acoustic set of his own material... a far cry from his early days in punk band Toxik Sox! Hagen Engler, erstwhile editor of FHM and author of Comrade Baby (a collection of his columns and poems) will be laying down his combination of slam poetryand acoustic tunes on guitar. David Chislett, who last year released his debut poetry collection, will be playing musical versions of a selection of those poems. All three artists will have their wares on sale on the night: Books, poetry, CD’s, demos, sculpture, sketches and more. So come on down to Amuse cafe on 7 February to experience a somewhat unusual musical night out. Show starts at 19:30 and there is a R20 cover charge.
