WELCOME

THE CONCIERGE

Lizelle de Haas-Les Clef d’Or Member- Executive head concierge at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton start her 3 year Studies in Hospitality & catering management. During and after her training in the Ravensberger Hof Boutique Hotel she was trained in all departments and was then asked to stay on for another year as a Banquet coordinator. After 6 Years in Germany she finally returned to Johannesburg in 2005 and started as a Guest Relations Officer at the Intercontinental Santon Towers for 2 years. Her role was assisting Concierge and that’s when the Concierge bug bit her.... she just knew this is what she wanted to specialize in! She had found her niche, her dream, she found a place where she belonged.

D

istinctly warm and welcoming, the Maslow hotel as well as its concierge play a pivotal role in the achievements of the hotel. Complementing the rich, cultural heritage of Johannesburg, the Maslow Hotel, through beautiful architecture as well as service and attention to detail ensure each and every guest is well looked after. The concierge is always friendly, welcoming and plays an important role in the luxury and tailor-made experience within and outside the hotel.

“THROUGH BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE AS WELL AS SERVICE AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL ENSURE EACH AND EVERY GUEST IS WELL LOOKED AFTER.” Lizelle de Haas is the hero of the Maslow Hotel, she is the executive head concierge. The Maslow Hotel is renowned for its elegance, charming design, fine dining and world-class facilities. Lizelle ensures the best quality for her guests and makes their every desire a reality. Lizelle started off her career in the Hospitality industry in a small Restaurant in Gutersloh Germany while waiting to

“LIZELLE DE HAAS IS THE HERO OF THE MASLOW HOTEL.” Furthermore Lizelle received the opportunity to become Head Concierge at Protea Hotel Balalaika and after approximately 5 years the Radisson Blu Sandton asked Lizelle to join them. Just as she had settled and felt comfortable, the opportunity came along to be part of the Opening team for Sun International. With a very nail-biting and tough decision to make, she had to take the change and go with a new opening. Lizelle was open and excited for the transformation. When she Joined Sun International last year in November, all the head of departments had to work from Head office and were recruited while the Hotel was still under construction. On the 7th of January 2013 the Maslow Hotel opened its doors with new, fresh ideas, concepts and a new selected team.

“AFTER 6 YEARS IN GERMANY SHE FINALLY RETURNED TO JOHANNESBURG IN 2005” Moreover, 2011 was a very memorable year for Lizelle in her career, together with 2 Johannesburg Concierges she received her Golden Keys and became the First Female in South Africa to receive such an hon-

ourable symbol of service excellence. What an unbelievable achievement, what an inspiration and a role model to so many South African women. Lizelle says: ‘Being Concierge is what I love and breath, I can’t imagine doing anything else then Concierge.’

“SHE RECEIVED HER GOLDEN KEYS AND BECAME THE FIRST FEMALE IN SOUTH AFRICA TO RECEIVE SUCH AN HONOURABLE SYMBOL OF SERVICE EXCELLENCE.” As well as having a passion for being a concierge, Lizelle also has a love for Joburg as most people love to call it. Lizelle sees Joburg as vibrant, diverse and full of energy! She also doesn’t ignore its “bad” side and its dark history but it’s exactly that past and the people who live here that she thinks, makes this city so unique. Lizelle loves the many historical Museums and sites to visit, beautiful Theatres and art galleries to choose from and this largest man made forest which is also home to OR Tambo Airport that connects the world with South Africa and the African Continent. Thus, evidently, Lizelle has a great affection and appreciation for Johannesburg and when asked what she would do in Johannesburg for 24 hours, Lizelle had the following itinerary: 8:00 Staring the day off with Breakfast at the my favourite Patisserie Belle in the Randridge Mall, they simply have the best pastries and Croissants in town 09:00 Off to the Apartheids Museum and the Origin Centre to get the best of South African History 14:00 Having Lunch on the Nelson Mandela Square at the Lekgotla African Restaurant

15:00 Some Shopping and browsing at Sandton City Shopping Centre is a must, there is nothing one would not find there .After Lunch doing and after doing some shopping At Sandton I will also pop in at Bryllianta for some Diamond education. 17:00 Getting pampered after a long day at Africology Spa at the Maslow Hotel 19:30 After being revitalized and beautified dinner is next at the Lacuna Bistro at the trendy Maslow Hotel 21:00 Drinks at the famous Baron where there is always an energetic vibe and plenty of people to meet By: Bianca Maletsky Patisserie Belle www.patisseriebelle.co.za 011 791 6242 The Apartheid Museum www.apartheidmuseum.org 011 309 4700 Origins Centre www.origins.org.za 011 717-4700 Lekgotla African Restaurant info@lekgotla.com 011 884 9555 Sandton City Shopping Centre www.sandtoncity.com 011 217 6000 Bryllianta www.bryllianta.com 011 784 7867 Africology Spa at the Maslow Hotel www.africology-sa.com 011 791 6890/ 011 791 3842 Lacuna Bistro at the Maslow Hotel www.suninternational.com/maslow 011 226 4600 Baron www.thebaron.co.za 011 883 8435/6

RAMKIETJIE HOTEL & RESTAURANT Just A 45 Minute Drive From Joburg, Ramkietjie Is An Absolute Gem.

S

et amongst giant willow trees, where peacocks roam the river banks on lush, grassy slopes, a jewel unfolds to reveal Ramkietjie Hotel & Restaurant. Its one of Johannesburg’s best kept secrets! Just a 45 minute drive from Joburg, Ramkietjie is an absolute gem. An excellent road system and grand entrance with 24-hour security, allows you to drive yourself down where the estate is waiting for you. In front of you lies a wooden footbridge setting the rustic, authentic, country style of the estate. Beautiful indigenous tress and bushes and pretty purple and pastel pink flowers set the scene of tranquillity.

“JUST A 45 MINUTE DRIVE FROM JOBURG, RAMKIETJIE IS AN ABSOLUTE GEM.” One favour that I ask, don’t be discouraged by the RamkietjieHotel & Restaurant. I know all to well that the assumption is that the estate is only for weddings, conferences and functions as its grounds are colossal. It’s tempting to believe these assumptions and judgements but Ramkietjie will no doubt woo you with her beauty, restaurant and comfort. The estate is certainly ideal for functions and weddings, however there is so much more to this country concept, there is much more to enjoy and take advantage of.

8

“RAMKIETJIE HOTEL & RESTAURANT WILL NO DOUBT WOO YOU WITH HER BEAUTY,” Firstly there are events held on a weekly basis. There is the wonderful Country market which is held the first weekend of every month. Included in the market are upmarket quality stalls, face painting for the kids and jumping castles, food and drink and safe parking. Then every Sunday there is a 3 course lunch, you can wine and dine and enjoy live music with a delicious 3-course carvery- this one can’t be missed!

“THERE IS THE WONDERFUL COUNTRY MARKET WHICH IS HELD THE FIRST WEEKEND OF EVERY MONTH.” Secondly I’m sure you have heard about the delightful and compelling, Nipple Caps & G Strings which is currently on. Unfortunately finished now, but you had to have experienced or heard about the International hit sensation, Umoja, it was such a success! Also upcoming is Heart & Soul, and the talented and engaging Steve Hofmeyer. So get your friends and family together to enjoy the special events and offers at Ramkietjie! A place where you can come put your feet up and simmer down with friends, family and colleagues, whether it is for special

celebratory occasions, an intimate dinner or just to have a relaxed lunch on the deck.

“WHETHER IT IS FOR SPECIAL CELEBRATORY OCCASIONS, AN INTIMATE DINNER OR JUST TO HAVE A RELAXED LUNCH ON THE DECK.” In addition to this, Ramkietjie’s rooms have been re-designedrenovated and revamped into a comfortable, country, rustic and homey environment. The stunning gardens and the sweet sound of the river running, makes for a peaceful experience where you can unwind and take a break from the sometimes aggressive and energetic city lifestyle. Ramkietjie offers an escape, it offers an adventure away from the worries and stresses, and it offers an ideal spot to begin to enjoy the peace and quiet and to become united with nature. While staying over at Ramkietjie you must visit the country restaurant which is set in the Old Farmhouse Venue. This beautiful authentic building offers more than

“THE STUNNING GARDENS AND THE SWEET SOUND OF THE RIVER RUNNING,” just the average restaurant – it is fine dining meets casual comforts. Guests are welcomed to an inviting

atmosphere, friendly service and simple yet outstanding food.

“WHATEVER YOUR HEART CRAVES IS EXACTLY WHAT RAMKIETJIE WILL DELIVER.” And, as if you needed more reasons to stop over at the estate, Ramkietjie is also the perfect wedding venue and conference facility. Whether you want a 50 guest wedding or a 300 guest wedding, Ramkietjie will oblige to your every desire. Ramkietjie and the owners understand this is your special day, and they believe your every dream should come true. There are various rooms on offer: The Deck gazes into the gentle waters and gardens and accommodates 50 guests, The Hornbill Room provides an intimate atmosphere for 80 guests, The Boma is ideal for modest functions or a chapel, it is thatched and can accommodate 100 guests comfortably, The Wilge Room is the largest facility and hosts 300 guests for weddings or conferences. Whatever your heart craves is exactly what Ramkietjie will deliver. It all seems too tempting and almost an infatuation but once you have relished in the dedication and ambition of the staff and owners at Ramkietjie, it becomes evident that it certainly is one of Joburgs Gems. www.ramkietjie.co.za 087 940 9920

Hailing from Italy, he has worked in his home country, Germany and Kuwait, although it was while in the UK that he really honed his craft after spending seven years at the Harrods Knightsbridge Pizzeria. It’s estimated that he served more than 400 000 guests during his tenure at the famous pizza joint.

“LATORRE IS DEEPLY DEVOTED TO TRADITIONAL STONEGROUND FLOUR, COLOURFUL FRESH INGREDIENTS AND THE BEST QUALITY CHEESE HE CAN GET HIS HANDS ON” He’s equally renowned for the way in which he stretches pizza dough, deftly spinning it between his hands, as he is for his passion for 100% authentic ingredients and flavours.

Latorre is deeply devoted to traditional stoneground flour, colourful fresh ingredients and the best quality cheese he can get his hands on. He’s also known for mixing things up a little in the kitchen, and is not averse to producing a fusion pizza with two different toppings on each half to please the fussy diner. It’s all this that Latorre brings to Piza e Vino which, much like the master chef himself, has a love for simple fresh food cooked the traditional Italian way. In the coming months Latorre will focus on the training of Piza e Vino staff including, preparation method and pizza making skills. He will also be helping Filip on the implementation of their new menu and the assistance in the opening of the new store in Midrand. RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH Mo-Zam-Bik

J

oburg is a city filled with culture, tradition, colours, customs, vibrancy, history, laughter, and of course food. Joburgers seem very pedantic about their food choice and seem to know a lot about what is high-quality and what’s not. In a city with so much diversity and variety it seems almost impossible to settle on one food preference. So, when it comes to Portuguese/African cuisine, there is the no better than the most wonderful and brand new Restaurant, Mo-Zam-Bik. Their concept is based on the authentic Mozambique “Barraca” which, in English, means “hut”. In Mozambique, in a home or on the street, eating, drinking and chilling is the way of life that is captured in a “Barraca”.

“THEIR CONCEPT IS BASED ON THE AUTHENTIC MOZAMBIQUE BARRACE” Situated in Silver Lakes, Pretoria East, Mo-Zam-Bik promises flavor, quality and excellence in every meal. Moreover the restaurant is homey and comfortable and the ‘hut-like’ environment creates a warm atmosphere. One feels as if you are eating

in your own living room with your own family. The concept of simplicity allows for a non-pretentious or exaggerated ambience but rather a down-to-earth vibe, where the focus is on the taste of the food. The menu offers food for meat and seafood lovers. As a start the rissoles are divine, the chicken livers are soft and tender and the calamari is crisp and fresh. For main the famous grilled chickens are marinated in an Afro Porto flavor and are served with traditional Jasmine coconut rice.

“THE CHICKEN LIVERS ARE SOFT AND TENDER AND THE CALAMARI CRISP AND FRESH” The prawns, cooked in a creamy beer sauce are mouth-watering and are filled with juicy goodness and are luscious and succulent. Another option is the house specialty of a tender steak topped with a fried egg. The espetadas and pregos are also spectacular. Only the freshest

friends are what are most important. It’s not fancy or ostentatious but rather a home away from home.

In addition to the unfussy ambience and appetizing food, the service is always gracious and efficient. Because the concept of Mo-Zam-Bik is to feel comfortable, to unwind and relax, the staff are friendly and constantly ready to lend a hand. The culture and lifestyle that is Mozambique encompasses a love for your fellow peer, a stress-free, freedom-loving civilization.

“IT’S A RESTAURANT WHERE LAUGHTER, GREAT FOOD AND FRIENDS ARE WHAT ARE MOST IMPORTANT!”

Mozambique being a holiday destination, a time to let go, to feel liberated and become enlightened, is exactly what you experience at the Mo-Zam-Bik Restaurant. Imagine white sandy beaches, a tropical paradise, unspoiled beauty, glory, freedom and delight. Envision that contentment and bliss achieved in Mozambique. All this is replicated into the food and experience at Mo-Zam-Bik Restaurant. Mo-ZamBik Restaurant creates that rich, laid back, cozy surrounding. It’s a restaurant where laughter, great food and

KOSHER DINING IN JOZI The Jewish Quarter: Sandringham, Norwood, Glenhazel And Killarney.

W

do the catering for all you venue needs.

e have taken it upon ourselves and have named Sandringham, Norwood, Glenhazel and Killarney The Jewish Quarter. Although all four areas are not right next to each other, Glenhazel and Sandringham are closely located to each other, as well as Killarney and Norwood. All four areas are affluent, leafy suburbs and all have a reputation for being predominantly Jewish. Within each area there are a series of Synagogues, amazing, tasty and upmarket restaurants, delicious delis, butcheries and all which are Kosher. RESTAURANTS: We will start in Sandringham with Mooz brothers, this is an amazing kosher Deli and restaurant. So not only can you get the tastiest wraps but cakes and muffins too. They also

Moving onto Glenhazel, if you are in the mood for authentic Italian kosher food, then Michelos is where you need to be, serving the freshest and most scrumptious pizzas, pastas and salads. You are sure to have a good time, as the staff are attentive and helpful. It is a wonderful kosher pizzeria with a warm and relaxed environment, and there is something for the whole family to enjoy. Our next stop is Killarney, within the Killarney Mall is the kosher restaurant and venue Metzuyan. What makes this restaurant so splendid is the scrumptious mehadrin commissioned menu which includes burgers, the famous Metzuyan roast chicken, a variety of carne options and pasta. Metzuyan is also perfect for that intimate venue, as they have state of the art technology available.

Norwood is next on our list and there are two must visit kosher eateries that we absolutely love, Next Door and Ready To Go. The idea behind these restaurants is to serve veggies, pastas, pizzas and fish, separately to the meat, so everything is Kosher. Thus one can enjoy flavoursome pizzas and pastas at Next Door and right next door go over to Ready To Go for a burger. DELICATESSEN: Of course no Jewish area is complete without ones daily dose of fresh and delectable pastries and baked goodies. At Feigels, the Glenhazel branch you will be delighted with the most yummy pastries, cakes, bread rolls and anything that’s baked and tastes good.

of your choice whether you need platters or something specific from their catering menu, or you can decide upon your very own custom menu and they will make it to your requirements. And if you find yourself in Sandrinham and in the mood for something cakey, then make your way to Shulas bakery for some of the tastiest treats. Kosher World is known as your one stop kosher supermarket, as they have a splendid variety of all sorts of food no matter what you are looking for, whether it be canned food or dairy products. Furthermore if you are looking for an excellent butchery make your way to either Nussbaum’s Kosher Butchery or Maxi Butchery for the finest kosher meats available. Done by Robyn Du Plooy

CHEF OF THE MONTH Chef Song at Gwefey Asian Restaurant in Sandton by Curtis Tissen

H

ailing from China, Chef Song isn’t just another cook. With over 25 years of culinary experience, he has found Zen when entering the kitchen. As he points out “I started cooking while I was in the military and my comrades quickly recognised my skills”, it’s no small task satisfying the pallets of hungry servicemen, but it was something Chef Song revelled in.

“I STARTED COOKING WHILE I WAS IN THE MILITARY AND HAS SERVED THE LIKES OF MANY FAMOUS CELEBS, INCLUDING BILL CLINTON.” But this was only the beginning of his culinary tale. You see, once he left the army this is where he quickly honed his skills and found himself cooking at one of the most prestigious restaurants in Shanghai, China, the Lao Fandian, whose history dates back to 1875 and has served the likes of many famous celebs, including Bill Clinton.

“IT’S AN EXHILARATING FEELING TO EXPLORE AND PLAY WITH YOUR DISHES” It was here where Chef Song developed and perfected some of his signature dishes like the Tong Po Pork and the Shanghai Edamane salad. But he had a burning desire

22

to share his Asian recipes with the Western World and headed over to the UK. While there, he began demonstrating his Chinese cuisine to an excited restaurant, but as Chef Song reveals “Over in England I realised that the Western pallet is different to that of the Chinese, so I had to adapt and allow my flavours to evolve. It’s an exhilarating feeling to explore and play with your dishes so you can offer your new clients something new and exotic.”

“I LOVE SOUTH AFRICA; THE PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS SO FRIENDLY AND VERY COMPLEMENTARY” After a short tenure in the UK, he returned to China to be with his family, but it wasn’t long before the travelling bug bit him again and the desire to share his passion for Chinese cuisine bought him to sunny South Africa, where he currently brings his meals to life with an exotic array of flavours and spices at the new upmarket Gwefey Asian restaurant. “I love South Africa; the people are always so friendly and very complementary after divulging in my dishes. It’s the combination of the sunny weather and the people that make this country such a special place.” But just like in the UK, Chef Song has realised that the South African’s pallets are different. “Once again I’ve been blessed with this amazing opportunity to evolve the way I prepare food.”

Hello Johannesburg June 2013 www.hellojoburg.co.za

“WE TRY TO PREPARE HEALTHY MEALS THAT NOT ONLY BURST WITH FLAVOUR AND DELIGHT”

This is why Gwefey has transformed from the old “Bruce Lee” style Chinese deco and food presentation to a modern contemporary look and feel that still celebrates its Chinese heritage.

One of the fundamentals for Chef Song is concocting healthy food, as he realises that customers have moved towards healthier eating. “We try to prepare healthy meals that not only burst with flavour and delight but also move away from the tradition of oily food portions.” A browse through the menu immediately highlights this. The Peking Duck and Kung Po Chicken are a must try as the chef explores with a variety of new and traditional ingredients. Ginger, rice wine, dry red chilli and of course soy sauce are just some of little secrets he admits to using. The proof as they say “is in the pudding”. Uncompromising quality is key and there’s always a secret ingredient as the ace up the sleeve.

“WE WANT TO OFFER AN AUTHENTIC CHINESE EXPERIENCE TO OUR SOUTH AFRICAN CUSTOMERS”

And Gwefey is about to turn around the perception of Chinese restaurants and the way the meals are prepared on its head. Shanghai is like New York City now, with tall skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle.

Like Chef Song put it “we want to offer an authentic Chinese experience to our South African customers and allow them to have a better understanding of Chinese cooking and its methodology and understanding a healthy lifestyle” So you won’t have to travel 1000 miles to enjoy proper authentic Asian Cuisine. It’s now available right here in Johannesburg at Gwenfy. After all it’s all about a trendy modern feel with that classic twist. 3 Lower Road Morningside 2196 Tel: 011 784 2283 www.gwefey.co.za info@gwefey.co.za

BRUMA ORIENTAL CITY

IRENE VILLAGE MARKET

If you are looking to do some shopping, which is inexpensive and fashionable at the same time, then Bruma’s Oriental City is a must visit. The shopping city is situated opposite the Bruma McDonalds, it is easy to find and parking is free. Although most of the shops are small and crammed and most of the owners only have a basic understanding of English, the clothes are not expensive (lower priced than any local retailer) and you have a wide variety to choose from. This is what Café Billi Bi is all about – a boutique café experience that totally re-thinks the usual coffee shop offering to serve not just delicious food, but a feast for the senses. One of the side-effects that comes with a city rich in dining options, is the over-saturation of franchised chain restaurants. Standardised ‘bulk a la carte’ food with speedy service but little imagination! That’s why you’ll welcome the refreshing break from formula that is offered by Café Billi Bi -with its signature style, personal approach and bespoke flair.

“Our intention has been to capture a fresh spin on the traditional ‘coffee shop’ experience. It’s about transforming the finest ingredients into masterfully-prepared and unique dishes with attention-to-the-last-detail service – turning casual café dining into an extraordinary yet highly accessible treat.” says proud owner and chef Clifford Correia.

The food that is set to make Café Billi Bi famous comprises original, well-prepared dishes with a gourmet twist. Delicious homemade pastas, amazing breakfasts and the freshest of salads with a spin, are just some of the daily specials that local foodies are raving about. Or choose from a menu that includes everything from decadent cakes to home-prepared pies and tantalizing burgers. Any time of the day is Café Billi Bi time!

THE PYRAMID Conference, Venue Centre & Day Spa

L

aunched in May 2000, the Pyramid Conference and Venue Centre saw a need in the market, specifically the south of Johannesburg and the CBD, to provide a large, quality venue centre that would cater for a wide range of events, from meetings, conferences, product launches, private events, weddings, road shows, exhibitions and so much more. Over the years not only was the venue graded as a 5 star facility in the meetings and special events category, but it has established itself as a front runner in service delivery, offering quality hospitality and competitive pricing. Facilities include a venue, The Great Hall, that can cater for a 300 seated banquet, or a 500 seating theatre style. A variety of smaller conference rooms are also provided, that can seat 150 classroom style or smaller groups of 20 -40 pax. Covered safe parking provides peace of mind. On site equipment includes AV screens, projectors, Free Wi-Fi Access, PA systems, DJ sound and a raised round stage in the main venue. In Oct 2010, The Pyramid Day Spa opened its doors. A true sanctuary for the body and mind to relax and unwind. Not only does the day spa cater for the private individual, who needs that special ‘me time”, but it is also an ideal environment for corporate groups looking to reward their staff as an incentive, or to come together to network, team build or brain storm in an environment

that is relaxing and away from the daily grind of the corporate world. Groups from 5 to 25 are comfortably catered for at the spa. Facilities include 2 Outdoor Garden relaxation areas, a plunge pool, sauna, steam showers, ladies Jacuzzi as well as stunning private executive suites with their own private relaxation areas, steam showers and Jacuzzi baths.

In 2011 The Pyramid Day Spa won the prestigious Les Nouvelles Esthétiques , Day Spa of The Year Award, as well as “Best of the Best, for interior design. The two facilities compliment each other so well, that over the past 2 years, a regular client base has been established, who regularly incorporate both facilities into their events.

Being passionate about empowering individuals and providing quality education, lead to the most recent development, that of The Pyramid Spa & Beauty School, which launched with 1st year students in January 2013. A unique concept in that, not only is the school based in a venue ideal for training , but it has an on site functional day spa facility where students can obtain on site practical experience during their time of studies, which will provide them with an added advantage when they need to seek employment in the beauty industry. We hope to expand the school by 2015 to include 2nd and 3rd year students.

MOVIES FAST & FURIOUS 6

AFTER EARTH

On Friday, May 24, Fast & Furious 6 opened in big screens across South Africa. Starring Vin Diesel , Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson, this film, the sixth in the Fast & Furious franchise, revolves around professional criminal Dominic Toretto and his crew. Following the Rio heist to topple a kingpin’s empire, their criminal records prevent them from returning to their home country, and our heroes have scattered across the globe.

After Earth will open on the 7th of June to in cinimas across SA. This post-apocalyptic, sci-fi thriller unfolds on Planet Nova Prime, light years away from Earth, and stars real-life father and son Will and Jaden Smith as Cypher and Kitai Raige, with Will also acting as producer and co-writer.

Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries. The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to reassemble his elite team in London. The payment – full pardon for the team so they can return home and make their families whole again.

THE HANGOVER PART III Described as ‘the epic finale to The Hangover trilogy’, The Hangover Part III, is the third installment in this highly successful and hilarious franchise. Released at Ster-Kinekor cinemas nationally on Friday, 31 May, the film is directed by Todd Phillips and brings back stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis in a comedy that sees the Wolfpack on another adventure. This time round however, there is no wedding or a bachelor party. But, when the Wolfpack hits the road to free Alan from a mental institution, anything can happen.

Approximately 1 000 years after humans were forced to leave planet Earth due to cataclysmic events, teenager Kitai Raige and his father Cypher crash land on Earth’s surface. With Cypher critically injured in the crash, Kitai sets off on a dangerous journey to signal for help. Along the way, he faces uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet and a seemingly unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash.

BOOKS ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS BY REDI TLHABI When Redi Tlhabi is eleven years old, two years after her father’s death, she meets the handsome, charming and smooth, Mabegzo. A rumoured gangster, murderer and rapist, he is a veritable ‘jack-roller’ of the neighbourhood. Against her family’s wishes, she develops a strong connection to him. Redi herself doesn’t understand why she is drawn to Mabegzo and why, at eleven, she feels a brokenness that only Mabegzo can fix.

THE BOOK OF WAR BY JAMES WHYLE James Whyle takes on the war genre with an eloquent narrative and a command of language and style that captures the fragility and bleakness of the time. There is no doubt that Whyle is a masterful storyteller.

BLITZ PATROLLIE Blitz Patrollie follows the adventures of Rummy Augustine (Joey Rasdien) and his partner, Ace Dikolobe (David Kau), police officers who have had the misfortune of being stationed in a little known depot in the belly of the Johannesburg CBD. Rummy is bogged down with trying to start a family and an overbearing mother-in-law who just won’t move out. The overzealous Ace, on the other hand, can think of nothing better to do in the morning than to put on his “lucky” bulletproof vest and head out to kick some bad guy ass.

The Book of War tells the story of a boy who comes to manhood in a war. William Kentridge has called it, “a rare feast”, and Rian Malan, “a very good book, possibly great.” Published by Jacana Publishers www.jacana.co.za

NIGHTLIFE

SOUL CANDI “Ke Kopa go botsa”

“K

e Kopa go botsa”... just a mention of those four catchy lines and you are bound to turn heads! Muzart is the new talk of the town with their catchy first single taken off their debut selftitled album. This five piece band is definitely going places and fuses a whole plethora of influences to bring out the catchy unique sound that has captured tons of fans. Soul Candi has given birth to yet another gem! And if you think the music is hot then you need to catch them live and really get blown away! Their music video drops very soon and is sure to live up to the hype that their album has created and is certainly living up to! Flip the coin and our attention is redrawn to one of the most ear catching outfits in the game right now... C9INE. Their single “2gether” is nothing you have heard before. Musical chords, strings and cutting edge vocals, to bring out a sound

44

that you can’t find anywhere else on this dance planet. And as if that was not enough the music video to the song brings its own 360 degree edge of uniqueness altogether. From the audio you find on their CD titled “A Million Sprockets,” to seeing them live on stage, every musical moment spent listening or watching C9INE should merely be considered priceless!!! Their album is also available and out in stores right now. You have obviously heard the song “Umajaivane” by now, with Brick’s catchy hook line spread across the tune and DJ Whisky’s blazing drums, bass and percussions making up an undisputed winter warmer to drive us right through to the eve of summer!!! Already a chart topper, this tune has become an instant favorite on local radio and on the club circuit. The Whisky album, aptly titled “Rebirth,” is also out now and already selling like hot cakes so if you don’t have this one make sure you go out and get it with immediate effect!!!

MOTORING

MOTORING Best Cars To Take You Through Jozi THE NEW Geely Emgrand EC7 “Geely is about to surprise the South African market with the launch of a new brand and arguably the best value for money sedan in the country. It is the Geely sub-brand Emgrand, much like various topselling Japanese and German brands with luxury car sub-brands.” THE NEW Geely Emgrand EC7 is exactly that – a high-quality vehicle with high spec as part of a vision to establish a new range for the discerning buyer, but at an affordable price. Launching from a sniff below R150 000, the high-quality and full-specced new EC7 is a confident competitor in a market flooded by much more expensive cars offering this kind of quality and spec. Two models will be available at launch – the EC7 GL Luxury and the EC7 GT Executive. With all the electronic bells and whistles expected in anything on offer in this class out of Korea, Japan, Europe and the USA, the new Geely Emgrand EC7 is scheduled to get noticed by buyers and competitors alike. The EC7 is the privately owned Chinese automaker’s first world model and the result of three years of intense research, testing and development. The EC7 is based on an entirely new Emgrand platform developed according to a first-class internationally-derived development process. The entire vehicle meets multiple European safety and environmental standards, and is the first and only Chinese vehicle produced by a stand-alone manufacturer to score a full-house of 5 stars in the Chinese NCAP crash tests, and 4 in its very first attempt at the stringent EuroNCAP collision tests. Offering outstanding value for money at an unmatched price, the new EC7 is launched with a powerful 1.8-litre 4-cylinder DOHC engine matched to a 5-speed manual transmission with a 6-speed auto version (not yet available for right-hand drive models) following later this year in various international markets.

The new EC7 is a C-segment sedan aimed at families looking for an economic short, medium and long distance vehicle, professionals who need a bigger car offering great value, representatives who spend a lot of time – and distance – behind the wheel, as well as fleet operators and private buyers who do not want to break the bank.

NEW FIESTA ST POWERS INTO SA The new Fiesta ST is Ford’s fastest and most dynamic small production performance car ever, employing a precision-tuned and driver-focused powertrain and chassis to deliver the ultimate Fiesta driving experience.

suspension, steering and brakes for optimised driving dynamics, and introduced features only previously found in larger performance cars – including enhanced Torque Vectoring Control (eTVC) and three-mode Electronic Stability Control (ESC), sixspeed manual transmission and rear disc brakes.

The car has a very fashionable and comfortable interior, with abundant space all around. Rear seat passengers will find a surprising amount of leg and head room, as is the case with the front occupants. As far as comfort is concerned, both launch models have leather interior, climate control with easy to control dials in the centre console, and the sound system (radio/CD player) situated directly above. The fully adjustable air vents on the extremes of the dashboard and in the centre console will surprise many with its high quality mechanism absolutely free of even the tiniest of rattles… The new Emgrand EC7, which will be available through each of Geely’s 40 plus dealerships all over South Africa and in Namibia, will be launched at the very competitive price of R149 990 for the GL Luxury and R164 990 for the GT Executive, which apart from the electric driver’s seat also boasts ESC (electronic slip control), 4 additional airbags and an electric sunroof.

Developed by Ford Team RS, the European arm of Ford Motor Company’s Global Performance Vehicle group, the new Fiesta ST is equipped with a 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine to achieve 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and offer 134 kW and 240 Nm of torque. Top speed is 220 km/h. Despite its performance credentials the Fiesta ST remains fuel efficient at the pumps using an average 5.9 l/100 km and 138 g/km CO2* on a combined cycle run. Ford Team RS tuned the powertrain,

The new Fiesta ST features a large trapezoidal grille with a unique honeycomb construction and dramatic rear diffuser element. The refined high-contrast interior is equipped with Recaro seats, and a new Sound Symposer that channels the engine note to the cabin to ensure the distinctive engine roar is integral to the driving experience. The Fiesta ST also makes use of SYNC™ and MyKey® technology available in other models in the Fiesta line-up.
