Take Old Fort Road heading from the city centre to the beachfront. Turn left into Brickhill Road. Continue until you reach Somtseu Road where you turn right. Mini Town is nearby when you reach Snell Parade.

The park breeds 17 of the 24 threatened bird species in its collection. The park is involves with the South Africa Crane Working Group in breeding and then releasing the Wattled Crane. The birds are hand-reared using a glove puppet, and are then released near Dullstroom. Wattled cranes are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, and there are only about 8000 in the wild.

UMGENI RIVER BIRD PARK Designed and built by Dr. Alan Abrey in an old quarry site, the Umgeni River Bird Park was opened in April 1984. The park was owned privately by a group of bird lovers who wanted to educate others about birds from around the world. It was run by Alan Abrey until his retirement in 1997, and in those years the artwork for the park (guidebook illustrations, park maps, and so forth) were done by his daughter Robyn Abrey.

MINI TOWN It is one of Durban’s most well-known tourist attractions. It was first established over 30 years ago. Mini Town gives a good impression of some of Durban’s landmarks in a 1:24 scale. A walk around mini town will give you an opportunity to view excellent models of some of Durban’s most interesting buildings. One of the most popular features of the layout is a rail network with trains continually on the go. There is also an airport complete with airplanes. The harbor scene is very realistic and features a tug and ship travelling around the harbor. There is a railway bridge across the harbor and trains need to

Indonesia, and Australia, and emphasizes conservation. Birds in the show includes a owls, cranes, hornbills, macaws, kookaburras, toucans, vultures, in an open air auditorium. The show is staged twice daily, weather permitting.

DURBAN PEOPLE MOVER The attractive, brightly-coloured buses travel through the city every 15 minutes and are a popular, fun way to travel around the city or along the beachfront. There is wheelchair access, and bus-stop wardens offer help to disabled passengers requiring assistance, route and schedule information and security to all waiting passengers.

Set in a land filled and landscaped former quarry, the park includes several natural waterfalls. Paths for visitors wind through three aviaries and past other aviaries and open exhibits. A viewing window in the nursery lets visitors see how the birds are hatched and raised. Construction of the Free Flight Bird Show arena was started in 1995, with the venue staging its first show in 1996.

Tickets: A single journey on the People Mover will cost R4.00 (ZAR) and a full-day pass will cost you R10.00 (ZAR). Operating Hours: The Durban People Mover service runs daily from 05h00 to 22h00. These extended operating hours allow commuters greater freedom and access to Durban’s entertainment and business areas.
