UNDERWATER WONDERLAND Brave the depths of the Indian Ocean, and discover an ancient world hidden just beneath the water’s surface... Aliwal Shoal, just off the coast of Umkomaas, has a spectacular marine ecosystem awaiting intrepid scuba divers. The magnificent reef is alive with colourful corals, reef fish, turtles, whales, rays and moray eels. It is rated among the top five warm water diving spots in the world. The reef is particularly renowned for its ragged-tooth sharks, which cruise the reef’s intricate gullies and caves. The reef is also inhabited by zambezi and tiger sharks! The warm, clear water has excellent visibility and rarely drops below 19 degrees Celsius. Some of Aliwal’s dive sites include: Raggie’s Cave – which is famed for its ragged tooth sharks, moray eels and potato bass. Divers are only allowed to enter the caves when the sharks are not in residence. Outside Edge – where the greatest variety of marine life on the shoal can be found, including game fish, sharks, dolphins and scorpion fish. Wreck Dives – at the MV Produce and The Nebo provide fascinating alternative sites, with excellent photo opportunities and interesting sea life, including lion fish, the rare harlequin goldie, moray eels and brindle bass. There are many dive centres in the area that offer accredited scuba diving courses, dive equipment for hire and chartered dives to Aliwal Shoal and other locations along the coast. MITCHELL PARK ZOO Every day of the year could feel like a holiday, especially if you make your way to Mitchell Park. Named after Sir Charles Bullen Hugh Mitchell, the park was established in the early half of the previews century as an ostrich farm. That venture did not go as well as planned, so it was transformed into a zoo instead. Back then, a large variety of animals, including lions, leopards, crocodiles and many varieties of bird, occupied a large part of the zoo. The remainder consisted of beautifully landscaped gardens. One of the most memorable animals at the zoo at

the time was Nellie, an Indian elephant. Today Mitchell Park has a whole host of small animals and birds for you to visit, including crocodiles, buck, raccoons, cranes, flamingoes, wallabies, monkeys and tortoises. There is a walkthrough aviary that allows you to get close-up views of many beautiful bird varieties. A sand-filled playground allows small children to enjoy playing on jungle gyms, swings, slides and other equipment. Paraplegic facilities make sure that even physically challenged visitors have a great time. While you play, mom can relax and enjoy tea or a meal at the Blue Zoo tea garden, nestled among trees and attractive flowerbeds. Carefully tended lawns are perfect for family picnics, and even skottle braais are allowed. Mitchell Park’s staff members take an interest in educating children on the animal and plant worlds. They teach visitors how to preserve our natural wonders so that future generations may also enjoy them.

Spend time enjoying all the fun of the fair. The Cable car provides a scenic and majestic view of the beach-front from the air, while the bigger kids have the fun and the exhilaration of the Breakdance and experience the thrill of the Swingboat. The little ones can experience the Elephant Ride or Carousel.

The Zulu dancing show is impressive with the dancers in their traditional garb, showing off their skills with grace, agility and humour- a truly unforgettable experience! CULTURAL DELIGHTS MUSEUMS KZNSA - Kwazulu- Natal Society of Arts www.kznsagallery.co.za 166Bulwer Road, Glenwood The KZNSA, founded 108 years ago and located in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, was initially established as an informal opportunity for artists to discuss, exhibit and market their work. During the past century, the organisation has been through a number of radical transformations, and today it is the province’s premier contemporary art gallery hosting exhibitions of local, national and international importance. There are a number of components to the organisation. The shop develops and markets local craft and design, and is also an important outlet in the province for design from the rest of the country. The outreach programmes provide art and culture education development activities with strategic partners. However, the key component of the organisation is its gallery exhibitions and public programmes. Open: Tuesday to Friday: 9:00–17:00, Saturday: 9:00–16:00, Sunday& public holidays: 10:00– 15:00. Closed on Mondays.

BAT CENTRE 45 Maritime Place, Small Craft Harbour Tel: 031 332 0451, www.batcentre.co.za The BAT Centre is an art development and community center located within the small Craft Harbour off Durban’s Victoria Embankment. It contains a number of retail outlets, a restaurant, bar and large hall fitted with sound and lighting equipment. There are large art studios, a number of exhibition galleries, music practice rooms, a dance studio, resource center and a conference room. A computer shop, repair and training service and offices for independent arts organizations complete the picture.

AFRICAN ART CENTRE 94 Florida Road, Morningside Tel: 031 312 3804/5 www.afriart.org.za During the past 50 years the African Art Centre has provided thousands of artists and craftspeople with opportunities for self-employment and the realization of their talents. Originally a project of the South African Institute of Race Relations, the Durban African Art Centre has, since 1984, operated as an autonomous, non-profit organization. Open: Monday to Friday 08:30-17:00 , Saturday 09:00-15:00

DURBAN NATURAL SCIENCE MUSEUM City Hall: 1st Floor City Hall, 234 Anton Lembede Street A museum about the earth, its history and life on earth, both past and present. Open: Mon- Saturday 8:30 – 16:00. Sunday & public holidays 11:00-16:00.Closed on Good Friday & Christmas day

The museum was started in 2000 as a small private museum, and has since expanded to host one of the biggest and most spectacular collections of African arts and crafts in the world. The collection is held in Roberts House, a fully restored Victorian national monument, in Glenwood, Durban, South Africa.

The Durban Art Gallery, now in its second century of existence, is home to collections that are as diverse as the eThekwini population.“Artworks from Europe, the East and Africa, dating from the 15th century to the present, make the gallery a microcosm of the many histories represented here,” says Acting Art Gallery Director, Jenny Stretton. The Gallery has a comprehensive collection of artworks, and constantly rotates displays from its permanent collection, interspersing them with traveling exhibitions of contemporary and historic pictures and artifacts. Open: Monday - Saturday 8:30 –16:00, Sunday 11: - 16:00

Three floors of the Victorian mansion are packed with Zulu beadwork, earplugs, wire baskets, milk-pails, beer-pots and fertility dolls ; Ndebele blankets and ceremonial items, and artefacts from the eastern Cape, Namibia and Kenya. The most popular exhibit is the life-size marionette room, where thirty life-size puppets are adorned with ceremonial dress from all over Southern Africa. This collection was exhibited at ABC Home, in Manhattan, New York, over the festive season 2008/2009, to great acclaim. KWA MUHLE MUSEUM 130 Bram Fisher (Ordinance) Road The KwaMuhle Museum is housed in the former premises of Durban’s Native Affairs Department which was charged with, among other functions, the control of the influx of Black migrants into the city. Migrants arriving in Durban had to report to the building where they waited in queues to see if they would be issued with passes to allow them to remain in town.

Hello Durban 24

The unsuccessful applicants would be forced to return to homes in the country or else risk staying in town illegally and living with the constant threat of arrest during a police raid. The Durban System, as it was known, became the blueprint for apartheid in later years. The KwaMuhle Museum has many displays documenting the Durban System including a very illuminating one on just how the municipality managed to get the system to pay for itself through a municipal monopoly of brewing and selling sorghum beer.

OPENING TIMES: Sunday - Friday 9am to 4pm Public Holidays: 9am to 4pm Closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays

Another display concerns the Cato Manor riots which were largely the result of that monopoly. Open: Monday to Saturdays; 8:30-16:00, Sundays and Public Holidays; 11:30-16:00

DURBAN BOTANIC GARDEN 9A John Zikhale Road, Berea Tel: 031 309 9240 www.durbanbotanicgardens.org.za Founded in 1849, Africa’s oldest surviving botanical gardens houses one of the world’s top collections of “living fossil” plants. These pre-dinosaur cycads (seed-producing plants extending back 250 million years) face possible extinction in the wild.

THE KZN SCIENCE CENTRE Shop E51, Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Umhlanga Tel: 031 566 8040, http://kznsc.org

The Wood’s Cycad species is named for founding Durban Botanic Gardens curator and botanist John Medley Wood, who, in 1895, discovered a single, surviving cycad plant in a Zululand forest. Walking through the Gardens’s cycad forest is a bit like stepping onto the set of Jurassic Park. No dinosaurs here, but the pink-backed pelicans sitting in the trees do look eerily like pterodactyls.

The KZN Science Centre implements projects that aim to create awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics whilst fostering a culture of giving back through their non-profit status. During major school holidays special themed programs are offered for the interest of the young visitors.
