aquila collection celebrates digitally during lockdown

While the country - and indeed the world - is fighting this global COVID19 pandemic, the Aquila Collection had reason to celebrate during these trying times with the birth of new wildlife and a digitally observed birth of a child of one of the dedicated Anti-Poaching Unit members. Following the announcement from the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, that in an effort to #FlattenTheCurve and to #StopTheSpread, we are in lockdown for a period of 35 days, Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa, and Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve - both just outside of Cape Town - temporarily closed its doors. With the Big 5 and other wildlife on both reserves, the Anti-Poaching Teams continue their dedicated service, while the conservation teams ensure that the health and wellbeing of the animals are top priority. While South Africa - and indeed the world - fights the #COVID19 pandemic, the Aquila Collection had a few light moments of celebration during the first 6 days of the South African lockdown. Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa, just under two hours from Cape Town, had confirmation from the Anti-Poaching Units that they observed the birth of a baby hippo at the property. Similarly, the conservation teams at Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve notified head office that they spotted a beautiful baby giraffe and new born buffalo. 6 days after we received the news from Aquila Collection, a baby Rhino was spotted in the early hours of the morning at Inverdoorn. Another blessed arrival. While this is most certainly news to celebrate during these trying times, Aquila’s remote teams furthermore had a surprise opportunity to celebrate the birth of a new human being. A dedicated member of the Anti-Poaching Unit tuned in digitally to witness the birth of his child while he was on duty out in the veld. The management and fellow staff congratulated him and his wife on the birth of their child and cannot thank him enough for his dedicated service to the wellbeing and safety of our endangered species. The conservation teams report that all wildlife are thriving and in good health. Management further notes that the teams in lockdown on the properties are healthy and in good spirits. While guests are prohibited from visiting the reserves just outside of Cape Town, the Aquila Collection marketing office encourages people to follow the social media pages of both Aquila and Inverdoorn to be notified of any further updates during lockdown. *FYI: all wildlife at Aquila Safaris are under electronic surveillance with special attention to rhinos and their horns.

arts festival goes online

Xova, Photo by Mark Wessels

So here’s the thing… The National Arts Festival 2020 won’t be cancelled, but it will be different. The team at the National Arts Festival have been worrying, thinking, worrying, arguing and thinking some more about what to do about the Coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe in relation to South Africa’s very special annual Festival. THIS OUR REALITY: Based on the ban on major events they can’t allow more than 100 people to congregate anywhere. Due to the travel ban and recommendations with regard to domestic travel and the use of public transport, artists and visitors can’t get to Makhanda and performances can’t get to them. The team doesn’t want to contribute to the spread of the virus and fully understand that this is a time for isolation.

Bombshelter Beast, Photo by Jonathon Rees

That’s not what they do. They create experiences and celebrate the arts. So, after more thinking, listening, reading, arguing and talking, they’ve come up with a plan…. They’ve decided to do

something bold and something they have never done before. From 25 June to 5 July 2020, the National Arts Festival will be going completely virtual for the full 11 days of amazement. Going virtual will mean that the Festival can continue to support artists and the arts in 2020, by presenting work within a digital space. This way they can share some magic and hope with those who may still be confined to their homes. An opportunity to connect when we are being asked to distance ourselves from one another.

12 l

Hello Cape Town May 2020

Artists depend on festivals like this to generate an income through selling tickets, getting their work seen and talked about locally and internationally and networking with their peers. Rather than cancel, they aim to create a new opportunity for artists and audiences alike to celebrate the arts, and to create an accessible platform for artists to share their work. Millions of people across South Africa and the world will be cut off from each other in completely unprecedented ways: unable to go pray, school or work, or socialise outside of their immediate family. This is absolutely the responsible thing to do to contain the uncontrolled spread of COVID-19, but as social beings, it is going to chip away a little bit of our souls every day that the bans are enforced. Why make the decision now and not wait? National Arts Festival leaders have just over 100 days to the opening day. The reality is that they can’t ask artists to prepare for a festival that may or may not go ahead; they can’t ask supporters to make their plans, book their accommodation and transport, without the certainty that it will happen; and they can’t ask service providers to stand at the ready if it may all come to nothing.

Bombshelter Beast, Photo by Jonathon Rees 1

The 2020 National Arts Festival will go down in our history as the first-ever virtual edition. For Makhanda and the Eastern Cape, this is going to be a really hard year and management are fully aware of the enormous impact that COVID-19 will have on our economic stability. They know how much income the festivals contribute to the infrastructure and economy of Makhanda. They remain committed to the city and will continue to play the role as good corporate citizens.

Kitty Phetla in Going Back to the Truth of Space Photo by Mark Wessels

“We will let you know more in the next few weeks about what will be on offer and how this will all work. We are engaging with our sponsors and donors, the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, Standard Bank of South Africa, the Department of Arts and Culture, Distell and Multichoice regarding our plans. Our commitment to the arts remains steadfast and we invite you to take this journey with us”. Says MONICA NEWTON, CEO of the National Arts Festival. We will be engaging directly with all artists and traders who are currently registered to participate in the 2020 festival. Here’s to a whole new and exciting experience for the National Arts Festival because if anyone is resilient, agile, creative and extraordinary – it is our artists. Hello Cape Town May 2020 l

you mean the world to us These last few months, while the pandemic washed over the globe and caught nations off guard, our region, being located on the southern hemisphere came to face a tremendous conflict with the halt required from us all. The time and season, peek of summer, is the foundation stone for many businesses and our winelands takes a big part on this step.

De Grendel

Scaling between the need to separate, detach and lockdown and the need to unsure the future and resilience of South Africa’s agricultural communities headed by the hundreds of grape growers and wine estates, our government took a bold decision to allow the continuation of the 2020 harvest, drawing from the assumption that most of these agriculture communities are secluded to begin with. Now, 2 months down the time line, it looks that taking this path was right. South African wineries and wine estate have secured in their wine cellars one of the best harvests they have had in recent years, coming out from 3 years of drought with a fruitful result. Although travel options are to come and be clarified in the near future, the recent easing of our lockdown arises with the opportunity for wineries and estates to continue with wine export.

Eagles’ Nest

The beauty of it is that although the South African wine industry is more than 3 centuries old, most are still family owned or local co-ops, working together to achieve wine excellence for their brands, families and employees. You are to be sure that by choosing to buy this high end, quality product of our make, most of the times you are supporting a genuine, local need. You are welcome to start by checking these award winning options: De Grendel, from Durbanville Wine Route, is a managed now by the 4th generation. They offer a diverse wine portfolio and a premium cider- a byproduct of their fruit farming. degrendel.co.za

Perdeberg Winery

Eagles’ Nest from the Constantia Wine Valley, is a young boutique winery, producing a specific range of red wines, exclusively matured in French wine barrels. Their wines are sought after by people of the know and currently cannot be ordered online from them directly, but they do have distributors and points of sale in 12 countries, across different continents. www.eaglesnestwines.com Perdeberg Winery, located in Paarl wine route, specialises in wines of Dry Lands. They source part of their grapes from growers bordering the Karoo desert resulting in wines with concentrated aromas and flavours. Their large selection of wines was recently joined by a non-alcoholic option and locally crafted beer.

one day “One Day” tourism campaign launched to inspire future travellers to the Western Cape The provincial government and the Cape Town and Western Cape Tourism, Trade and Investment promotion agency (WESGRO) excitingly announced the launch of the “One Day” campaign to support the tourism industry in the Western Cape during the Coronavirus crisis. This innovative campaign was developed by Wesgro and uses digital content tools to virtually showcase our beautiful province to those currently in lockdown in South Africa, and around the world, reminding them that one day Cape Town and the Western Cape will again be open for them to explore and experience. More than that, this campaign provides financial support to local tour guides who will become virtual guides, using streaming services to conduct tours of our top experiences in the Western Cape - from a step-by-step bokkoms cooking class, to an exploration of the cave paintings at Sankraal in the Cederberg and much more. Bringing the world of the Western Cape to people’s living rooms, the campaign will present twelve virtual tours using video calls and streaming services, like Zoom, by local tour guides who will use photography and video to highlight the magic of the province’s six regions - the Cape West Coast, Cape Overberg, Cape Town, Cape Winelands, Garden Route & Klein Karoo and Cape Karoo. At the end of a virtual tour, viewers will have the chance to show their appreciation to the guides via Paypal or Snapscan. The campaign will also remind visitors of our breathtaking scenery with downloadable Zoom backgrounds of Western Cape locations, and the “One Day in the Western Cape” podcast series on Spotify will feature locals describing a relaxing 24 hours spent at a location they love. Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, David Maynier said, “This a welcome campaign that seeks to inspire travellers, who are currently stuck at home, with ideas for their first visit, or their return visit, to Cape Town and the Western Cape. In addition, this campaign allows people to make a difference to the lives of our talented tour guides by appreciating their descriptive storytelling and expertise. We know that the lockdown is a tough time for businesses, especially those in the tourism sector, and so we will continue to work hard to support business in the Western Cape with new and innovative ideas such as this campaign.” Tim Harris, CEO of Wesgro, says, “This campaign was derived to keep the Western Cape top of mind as a prime location, to find new avenues for tourism amid an unprecedented crisis, and to support local guides, many of whom are out of work right now. With the recent news snippets about ‘escaped’ Boulders penguins taking to Simons Town’s streets, and the lazy lions making the most of empty roads in Kruger Park, there is also a desire for people who want to get back to nature, and who want to bring the outdoors indoors, while they’re in lockdown. The “One Day” campaign enables us all to dream of the day when we’ll be exploring our most beloved places with our loved ones again.”

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital

Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome (the possibility of developing a deep vein thrombosis), international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller, to commerce, to international affairs, and to the public’s health. So, given there are some things we can’t change about air travel, there are things we can do to protect our health and ensure our comfort while flying as well as after the flight.

art of the possible Many things, ways and plans needed to be postponed in the last couple of months but then, in the other hand, there were quite a few accelerated processes and contingency plans that surpassingly emerged for the public. One of the notable for Cape Town funs and followers from around the world was the occasion that IZIKO Museums of South Africa made a lot of their exhibitions available for free on their website. It is a great opportunity to explore and browse through some current history and contemporary African art. Singing Freedom: music and the struggle against apartheid. This exhibition shows that music was integral to events such as the Sharpeville massacre and other turning points in our history. Through its focus on freedom songs the exhibition tells the story of the various organisations, events and people who were involved in the struggle for an end to apartheid.

Iziko Museums of South Africa celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with the online launch of The Adventures of Mbali – Iziko’s Super Explorer; a comic book strip featuring Mbali – a young explorer set on combatting climate change – and created by Karoo and Invertebrate Palaeontology interns at Iziko Museums: Louis Jonk, Devonne Kortje and Mogammad Hendricks. The comic book strip’s lead character, Mbali, tackles the environmental and climate issues facing us today, and educates us about the natural world.

Matereality presents a survey of emerging and established artists in the 21st century who use particular media in deliberate, surprising and innovative ways. While focused primarily on South African art, it also highlights some examples from the rest of the continent. Dr William Fehr (1892 – 1968) was a Cape Town based businessman with a passion for collecting historical art and objects. The collection went on public display at the Castle during the 1950s, and portrays aspects of South Africa’s painful colonial past – including maps, portraits, and depictions of historical events, animals and flowers.

The São José represents the first known shipwreck with enslaved Africans on board to be identified, studied and excavated. This exhibition, Unshackled History: the Wreck of the Slave Ship, São José, 1794, tells the story of the São José’s identification, the innumerable processes it took to retrieve her belongings from the ocean floor, and, most importantly, of her “human cargo” – the people who were violently uprooted from their homes in Mozambique. Sailing from Mozambique in December 1794 with a cargo of more than 400 enslaved persons, the São José was en route to Brazil when she encountered rough seas near Clifton and tragically wrecked. More than 200 of the slaves perished in the violent waves, and the surviving 300 were sold into slavery in Cape Town. https://www.iziko.org.za/current-exhibitions

At the ZEITZ Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (ZEITZ MOCAA) website you can view discussions and audio guided tours like the head to head conversation between Meriem Berrada, Artistic Director at the Museum of Contemporary African Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Morocco and Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Zeitz MOCAA in South Africa. The two directors will address the urgencies, challenges, and opportunities impacting young contemporary art organisations on the African continent. Last on our list is the Norval Foundation.
