We are in the 22nd year of our democracy and Evita Bezuidenhout is still with us. For the last 35 years she has been in the public domain, firstly as the South African Ambassador to the Independent Black Homeland of Bapetiskosweti, and then once Nelson Mandela dissolved the Bantustans into one homeland called South Africa, she went into his kitchen and cooked for him. Now still regarded as the most famous white woman in South Africa, she has taken over the kitchen in Luthuli House where as a member of the ANC she cooks for reconciliation, having put the Cabinet on a strict diet. Her three born-free grandchildren have challenged her to protect democracy for the future generations to enjoy. As she says: ‘Boer maak ‘n Plan!’ So spend a special evening or matinee with her in the Artscape Theatre and join her in focusing on the news of the day with humour, confronting the realities of a rainbow nation in some trouble with optimism, and always keeping the glass half-full and not half-empty. Coffee lovers have always had their favourite haunts; some of these may be a well-kept secret by the locals. Well the secret is out, thanks to a chance comment by an English visitor, who was so enchanted with the Mother City and its vibrant coffee culture that she longed for a guide to show her the way. This book shares the location of some of Cape Town’s most appealing coffee shops and each section is prefaced with a map to help you plot your route. Each entry also includes information about parking, wifi and the type of coffee served, as well as some suggestions on what to do in the area.

Situated in the city bowl, it is rare to not find this delectable bakery riddled with groups of Cape Town creatives huddled together over their first cup of coffee for the day. Visitors are also able to enjoy the delicious breads and pastries on offer. Note: Make sure you get there early to try their famous bacon croissant – nothing can compare to this mouth-watering bacon-y, buttery delicacy. Opening times: Mon to Fri: 7am – 3:30pm | Sat: 8am – 2pm 185 Bree Street | City Centre | +27 (0) 21 424 5644

The boot has a interior lining of genuine sheep skin to keep your feet crispy warm .The boot is hand stitched with stitching that has been waxed to further increase its water tightness. The boot has a hard wearing sole, which last for many a winter. And to finish of the surf boot is sprayed with a leather protector witch gives the surf boots a water replant characteristic. The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family. How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go. Cool-Runnings, Toboggan Family Park lies just 25km from Cape Town city centre. Visit www.cool-runnings.co.za for more. Visitors can spend time in the Reptile Bay where Madagascan reptiles (chameleons and plated lizards), tortoises, Australian skinks and bearded dragons and a couple of noisy parrots are housed. A large aviary hosts all kinds of ex-pet birds such as budgies, love birds, pigeons and doves, as well as guinea pigs with wild hair! arbour House Constantia Nek has truly breathed life into one of Cape Town’s most iconic destinations. We welcome La Parada Tapas Bar - a tribute to the Spanish bars that bewitched Hemmingway. With sophisticated, light space with views over the verdant Constantia Valley, this casual finedining restaurant truly has a new lease on life.

for good measure. The restaurant specializes in authentic tapas, a favourite amongst the Capetonian foodies, incorporating an authentic Spanish flair. With many patrons popping in for afternoon drinks and a light bite, rather than a sit down dinner – which is after all the origin of tapas – the drinks list encourages as much experimentation as the menu.

“It is an iconic site, which was ripe for a refresh,” says one of the group’s owners, Michael Townsend. “We plan to retain the memory of the building; however, the inside will be lightened up and modernised.” The gardens will also receive a makeover, with the overgrown bushes and trees cut back to restore the beautiful views over the vineyards, and the sea and mountains in the distance.

The gypsy-chic decor, vibrant atmosphere and excellent tapas make this a fine spot for a quick lunch, after work relaxing, casual get together with friends, late-night carousing or a work gettogether. In Constantia Nek, with the views and ambience, it’s the ideal meeting place for Sunday breakfasts and long lunches.

The décor is simple and understated keeping the original form and structure of the Heritage building. White interiors with rustic stone walls, floors and herringbone brick work to simply amplify the original space. The modern twist on the riempie chairs also echo a South African heritage. The bar houses a gorgeous oversized wine fridge to highlight a fine selection of local wines. Enjoy the peaceful beauty and commanding views of the rolling Constantiaberg mountain range from the wall-to-ceiling windows opening onto a herb garden which supplies the kitchen. The interior is impressive, boasting ornate pressed ceilings, an eclectic mix of chairs and lampshades and a golden bull’s head

Chef Martin Senekal offers the best, most authentic tapas in town. We indulged in the delicious beautiful menu and enjoy dishes which ranged from in his legendary Seared Sesame Crusted Tuna and Beef Shin Croquetas Sriracha aioli, to cooked pork neck, roasted sweet potatoes, char grilled zucchini with chimichurri. If that isn’t enough, we topped it off with an apple and walnut baked donut with a coconut macaron, butterscotch sauce, pistachio and milk chocolate ganache. The menu is outstanding and diverse – an absolute delight for the senses. We couldn’t recommend this establishment high enough. It is also the perfect venue for private function – be it small weddings to corporate gatherings as the establishment can seat 80 -100 people.

THE INNER CHILD Justine Mahoney’s work reflects a sugar-coated surface where child’s play meets hard-core reality

Justine Mahoney’s work represents an amalgamation of South African and Western references and timelines, where mass media meshes with our local culture, politics, stories and identities. For the artist, this experience is schizophrenic in nature due to her upbringing in this country during the 70s and 80s. Following her first series of characters, Innocence, Mahoney’s second series, Tainted, opens as a solo exhibition at Southern Guild this month. We sit down to discuss the ten bronze figures.

identified with that money-collection-box for disabled children – a figure of a girl holding her teddy with her leg in a brace. From this first miniature came “Girl with a Cast on Her Leg”, a 52cmtall bronze sculpture painted with enamel – my version of that supermarket money-collection girl. This girl in a red dress and pigtails brought forth the next nine pieces in rapid succession.

What does this series represent?

There was no break between Innocence and Tainted. There is a blur between them, a cross-pollination and inter-splicing of 70’s Joburg suburbia with retro science fiction, African initiation and the lifting of apartheid. It is a transition from one series to another, like the fears, dreams, nightmares and aspirations are bleeding out of that sugar coating and taking on forms of their own.

This show brings a feeling of transition from statements like “everything is fine, my dear” to “what on earth is going on?!”, moving from the comfortable to the uncomfortable, from utopia to dystopia, from innocence to awareness. The wool has been pulled from over the eyes of these characters, and these sentiments are revealed within this exhibition in the form of collages and sculptural pieces. Tell us a about your process before you start sculpting? I have a huge collection of imagery, which I have assembled over many years. These are cut and pasted into collages to form a character or entity or exquisite corpse (that drawing game that children play). The process takes forever as I form the perfect fragmentation of body parts. This operation, being mostly intuitive, then forms the disposition of each piece. At what point did you sit down and begin creating your first series, Innocence? There was no intention to create a series called Innocence. I began in 1999 to make a miniature bronze sculpture working through my first memory of having my leg in a cast at the age of three as I had a mysterious bone-degenerating condition. I spent that year in and out of hospital and forever after that I completely

Did Tainted come soon after?

I have to go through each series to get to the next one, and I believe 10 pieces exhaust the possibilities within each idea. For the next series, I feel like it’s pointing in the direction of mutilation, scarification, sexual awakening, personal power and self defense, all overlaid with a shameless amount of embellishment. What role do your children play in your creative process? They are part of it. I have two daughters, Ella and Biba, and I inhabit the same illusory domain as them as I watch them, listen to what they talk about, and see an inner world come alive through play. we’ve seen What does being the ‘Blue Haired Betty’ entail? The Blue Haired Betty is not a persona; it is who I am on a day-to-day basis. Over the of years I have found it has been a signifying feature in my life - it is most certainly a conversation starter! *laughs* Naturally it was an easy pin up name. The Blue Haired Betty isn’t a game of dress up - it is my life and I like to continuously work on endorsing this way of living and growing this on a local & global scale. At his moment, in entirety, people are starting to engage in it and I feel it blossoming. It is important to really nurture it and educate other about the pin up and rockabilly lifestyle and promote it in the positive light it deserves. What does Gabbi do when she isn’t being Blue Haired Betty? *Laughs* You’ll hear this often: I’m a ‘Jill of All Trades’. I have 2 businesses which keeps me on my toes. I am the proud co-owner of AnonaMiss Beauty Emporium. We are the South African importers and distributors for the international brand Manic Panic. My brilliant partner Mischca does the day-to-day business whilst I do the marketing side of things. If that is not enough, I also managing my family restaurant: Catch 22 Beachside Grille & Bar. Most evenings you’ll find me here creating interesting new dishes and new cocktails. It’s a tough life! *giggle* In between I try have a social life and of course do as much as I can do in the pin up community. Talk to us about being a pin up? How did you get into it? I always find it an interesting topic to approach. ‘Pin up’ is seen as a thing to ‘become’, for me it was an evolution. If you can believe it, I used to be a full-on goth girl – black from head-to-toe in my younger years! My now fiancé has always been into rock music and also started getting into the rockabilly music. We had a 1972 Ford Fairlane which we used to take to the car shows which was always a blast. So you can say it kind of came as a gradual evolution as I came to discover this whole new world. Initially it really did start with the cars and the music. I’ve always been a dancer and I love true old school rock ‘n roll! Everything ‘pin up’ followed as I became immersed in the culture. I had finally found my place in the world. I have never been more comfortable and confident in my own skin. I can follow my traditional values and morals while still living in an alternative and unique lifestyle. It is the perfect amalgamation. I suppose one of the most defining moment I’d say was when I attending the Miss Viva Las Vegas Pageant in 2015. Internationally, it is the largest pageant that takes place and it still seems like a

I still cannot believe it? It was truly an enlightening experience in that these other ladies offered support and sisterhood. It made me strive to promote the love, comradery and values to get the pin-up pageant up and running here in SA. I want other girls to experience the same positive journey. Tell us about Dusty Rebels & The Bombshells and their the upcoming Rockin’ & Riding Festival? Of course it has to be on your social calendar! I am involved as far as endorsing our Anona Miss’s stall, as well as co-host & judge for the Miss Bombshell Betty contest. The DRTB inspires uniqueness, self-expression & creativity. A platform where all related aspects of the 1940’s & 50’s Rockabilly culture can be celebrated together in a 1-day lifestyle festival – from classic cars, custom bikes, fun fare rides, fashion vendors, food, live music and petrol heads have the rare opportunity to see Hot Rods agitate the gravel at the oval Dirt Track. It’s just and brilliant day of fun for the whole family. Who is your greatest inspiration? Wow! Apart from the 100’s of pin up girls whom I admire for their various attributes, I’d have to say my mom. What has been your greatest lesson learned in life? Dare to be different. This is incorporated in all aspects of my life, as Gabbi, as a business owner and as Blue haired Betty. Break the mould and stereotype! So yes, guess what? I have Blue hair and I dress a little crazy – but I pay the bills and I am successful. *Giggles* Next time people won’t be so quick to judge. What would you say to girls who want to get into the lifestyle of a pin up girl? It is not an over-night transformation. You don’t have to go the full blown hog in one fell swoop. It’s a process and this is what makes it more authentic. You learn and grow into it. I believe in incorporating your own individuality into it – there are no hard and fast rules. It will come naturally. – TLR Hello Cape Town November 2016 l

they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals!

Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world.

The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks.

Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate.

The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area.

The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land

Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose!

Great White Shark Cage Diving in Gaansbaai Looking for a heart-pumping adrenaline-spiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and unique lot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

5 safaris

Who comes to South Africa and doesn’t go on a safari?

A literal bucket-list experience, we have two breath-taking game reserves we recommend that will not only give you the opportunity to see the exclusive Big-5, other wildlife and flora, but an experience you will take home with you and cherish forever:

Accommodation include premier, family or luxury chalets.

AQUILA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE Published in the “World’s 21 favourite things to do in Cape Town” Aquila Private Game Reserve is recognised as a major Cape Town tourist attraction. Aquila offers you a unique opportunity to experience the Big-5: lions, rhino, buffalo, elephants and leopard up close. Additional wildlife and flora is available to view on our once-in-a-lifetime game drives. The Reserve offers a wide variety of safaris and other activities on offer like 4 x 4 trails, fishing and themed weekend breakaways.

Big 5 Game Reserve less than two hours’ drive from the city.

There is a great emphasis placed on a wildlife conservation educational experience and doing so offers visitors a complimentary educational introduction to their cheetahs. Cheetahs are captive bred and strictly controlled in the interest of cheetah survival worldwide. Aside from the Big 5, Aquila is home to hippo, giraffe, buck and over 170 different species of bird!

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife.

Iziba Safari Lodge offers complete relaxation in stylish accommodation.

The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn.

The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight. Hello Cape Town November 2016 l

south african design Missibaba’s flagship boutique in upper Bree Street is to the fashionista what a sweet shop is to someone with a sugar addiction. The space is a beautifully orchestrated explosion of colour and original design set amongst other destination boutiques and eateries. The quality of the products as well as the eye-catching and somewhat eccentric designs are what has seen this brand go from strength to strength over the last 11 years- everyone who’s anyone on Cape Town’s fashion scene has been spotted with an expertly crafted Missibaba bag clutched between manicured hands or dangled across an angular hip. As such, founder and creative director Chloe Townsend with her business partner Lizel Strydom and a team of talented women have been lauded as one of the most sought after South African designer brands thanks to numerous accolades, amongst them; being listed as one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 young South Africans to watch, winning both the Marie Claire Prix d’Excellence de la Mode Business Savvy Accessories Designer award as well as the Southern Guild Design Foundation Maker To Market award. Chloe and Lizel travel regularly for inspiration and source much of their leather locally as well as from Argentina. ‘For our latest capsule collection called Clutch we’ve had such fun playing with the jewel like colours we brought back from Argentina after a recent sourcing trip. Having this extensive, heart throbbing palette at hand has allowed us to express ourselves with wild abandon,’ says Liezl. The new capsule collection is an array of bright and distinctive oyster clutch bags featuring limited edition artworks. ‘Many of the designs have a surrealist slant finding inspiration with designers and artist such as Schiaparelli and Dali. Nature has of course worked her wonder on our souls with bugs, birds, reptiles and blooms featuring heavily in the new clutch collection,’ says Chloe. With each piece an artful creation of love and time, Chloe and Lizel have decided to introduce a ‘certified quantities’ label with this new collection, in a bid to remind buyers of this. ‘This is a design component that we have wanted to include for quite some time. We are excited to start dreaming up further capsule collections and these unique labels will be the perfect way to show our customers how many units of a particular design have been created.’ 229 Bree Street, Cape Town 8001 l +27 (0)21 424 8127 l shop@missibaba.com Hello Cape Town November 2016 l

what to see Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015, www.tablemountain.net

There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. Operating Hours: Sept-Mar (Summer) Mon-Sun: 08:00-19:00, Apr-Aug (Winter) Mon-Sun: 08:00-18:00, Conservatory Mon-Sun: 09:00 -17:00. The Aquarium holds over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve. The two ocean aquarium has established itself as a key player in raising environmental awareness through its high-quality exhibits, conservation and education programmes. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman

funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the first and the largest in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes more than 200 wine and grape producers within the boundaries of the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin classification. The Wine Route is divided into five sub-routes for a convenient exploration but you are welcome to be creative and target the wineries by any classification or taste. Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. Hiking up to Woodstock Cave

Have you seen the cave from De Waal Drive? It’s the Woodstock Cave and yes, you can get there by foot. This cave is one of the largest on Table Mountain. It’s formed by a long horizontal crack (50 metres wide by fifteen metres deep and three or four metres high at the entrance) halfway up Devil’s Peak that can clearly be seen from Woodstock and Salt River. If you’re up for an amazing panoramic Cape Town city, Lions Head and Table Bay view, this is it. Bring the kids (12+) and dogs! What to bring: Food & Water: Stuff your rucksack with delicious bits and bobs to enjoy a memorable picnic! Above all, it is important you keep yourself hydrated, so ensure you have plenty of water. Remember there are no dustbins, so keep it tidy and leave no trace. Hiking shoes, hats and sunblock: Naturally there will be a bit of climbing and a few wandering paths so you’ll need shoes with a strong ligature – you don’t have to necessarily buy hiking boots, but ensure those takkies have good grip! There are patches of shade however majority of the trek is unprotected so lather up some SPF folks. Camera: This is one of the most instagramed spots! Make sure you snap those beautiful views. Route: 2 routes: 2.5 - 3 hour 1. Tafelberg Road to Woodstock Cave (Easy - Moderate) It is a pleasant 1 hour walk. 2. Rhodes Memorial to Woodstock Cave (Easy - Moderate) It is a pleasant 1 hour walk. What to look out for: The mountainside will be offering you a plethora of fauna. Enjoy the stunning Fynbos, chirping birds, sunbathing lizards and depending on the season, a waterfall cascading over the front of the cave.

A strikingly beautiful and historically significant home in Kenilworth Upper

R24.9 million

This 700m 2 Sir Herbert Baker manor house, circa 1893, is situated within a secure enclave in sought-after Kenilworth Upper. Originally part of a larger estate, which was ultimately subdivided, the five-bedroomed, fivebathroomed abode occupies a 1748 m 2 erf. The historically important property was once home to Sir De Villiers Graaff, and it was here, in front of a roaring fire in the drawing room, that Jan Smuts, a regular guest, penned some of his memoirs. While the kitchen and bathrooms have been modernised and boast topof-the-range fixtures and finishes, the gracious bygone era character of the home prevails, thanks to a myriad of original features. Among these are: high ceilings, teak floors, elegantly profiled skirting boards, dado rails and cornices, as well as original fireplaces. Apart from the luxurious volume of the ceilings, they boast attractive mouldings and several are beautifully stenciled. Arched lead-paned windows are shuttered and the house offers several bay windows, which make perfect little secluded retreats. The home offers endless possibilities, and the entertainer will be spoilt for choice; The piece de resistance is the original grand ballroom with its polished teak floors, majestic ceiling, high, arched, lead-paned windows and a raised stage – the perfect spot for a stylish quartet! The spacious reception rooms are exquisitely appointed and include a formal dining room and lounge, plus an inviting family room, situated off the modern and well- proportioned gourmet kitchen. Doors lead to a large covered terrace, flanked by stack-back windows. From here, glorious views of the manicured garden and surrounds can be enjoyed. Upstairs, four generously proportioned en-suite bedrooms boast sash windows and shutters as does the quirky tower-room – perfect for overnighting guests. Four garages, domestic accommodation and a pool complete the complement. This very private home is conveniently located in the heart of the Southern suburbs, close to many leading schools. A quintessentially elegant family home or an ideal property for an enviable corporate flagship headquarters. For sale by Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate. hello doctor Facts about sunscreens that travellers should know Ultraviolet radiation consists of 3 wavebands: - UVC 100 - 280nm which is blocked by the Ozone layer - UVB 280 - 320nm and - UVA 320 - 400NM

According to a Survey that was conducted in the UK on 1500 female travellers, it was revealed that 22% would not use sunscreen and provided the following reasons: They are of opinion that they do not burn; Sunscreen is too expensive; The sunscreen does not work. Based on the above it is important that the emphasis should be placed on the importance of daily Solar Ultraviolet Radiation [DUVR].

Louis Washkansky

Denise Darvall

O n D e c e m b e r 3 , 1 9 6 7 t h e w o r l d ’s f i r s t h u m a n h e a r t transplant was performed at the renowned Groote S c h u u r H o s p i t a l i n C a p e To w n . T h e o p e r a t i o n w a s considered a success and a medical milestone. The man who performed this feat of pioneering surgery and led the world into an era of sophisticated medical advances was Christiaan Barnard, the surgeon who dared. To d a y T h e H e a r t o f C a p e To w n M u s e u m h o n o u r s the skill and wisdom of the heart transplant team, the courage of the recipient, the generosity of the d o n o r ’s f a t h e r a n d t h e m e m o r y o f t h e y o u n g d o n o r herself.

Those people who have intermittent DUVR are more likely to develop basal cell Cancer or skin malignant melanoma than those people who have a continuous lifetime exposure as they are more likely to develop squamous cell Carcinoma. Melanoma numbers are growing more rapidly than any other cancer in the UK, USA and Australia and are doubling every one or two decades. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) concept The sun protection factor [SPF]is a figure calculated by the amount of Ultra Violet Radiation [UVR] required to cause sunburn on the protected skin with sunscreen applied relative to the amount of UVR required to cause sunburn on the unprotected skin (without sun screen). SPF is not related to time of sun exposure but to amount and intensity which varies from time of day and latitude in the world where sun exposure is occurring.

Experience the drama of that night in fully restored operating theatres where the surgery took place. A fully guided 2 hour tour describes the electrifying events with the help of life-sized silicone models and replicas of important scenes.

Logically a higher SPF provides more sunburn protection and for a greater period of time. It also protects against UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deeper and are associated with aging and skin cancers. UVA protection should be at least 1/3 of the SPF and is measured by a star rating system. The ideal product would have SPF 30 plus a 4-5 star rating. Most people only apply half of what is needed. Application guide:

Guided tours begin at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 (17:00 tours by appointment only)

Use slightly more than a teaspoon on each of the Chest and Tummy, the Back as well as the Left and Right leg!
