One of history’s biggest discoveries has been faithfully recreated for South African audiences. The exhibition includes over 300 replica warriors, chariots and the emperor’s tomb itself. Qin Shi Huang was the first Emperor of China and ascended to the throne at the age of 13. His death remains a mystery, though many believe he was killed by someone within his ranks. Southern Guild’s latest exhibition of never-beforeseen collectible design questions the line drawn between art and design. Transformation, the summer group show on at Southern Guild, Cape Town, explores the space that the collectible design gallery occupies between art and design, visionary expression and forthright purpose. Exhibiting newly commissioned work from 15 South African designers and artists, Transformation presents experimentation in material and scale, challenging the traditional understanding of where art ends and design begins. ‘Does a sculpture become design if it offers a useful surface? Is a chair cast in bronze or carved in marble a sculpture? We are working in a sphere where function becomes dysfunction, where location and dislocation exist side by side, and intention and disturbance converge,’ curator and co-founder, Julian McGowan explains. Exhibiting artist Sanell Aggenbach says of the show, ‘It comes down to new ways of perceiving the world around you, altering perception by altering objects.’ Her piece, Baby its Cold Outside, references a photograph from a book of vintage flower arranging from 1968. ‘There is a certain beauty in flaws, a glitch in a photograph, a crease, a tear. This wall sculpture references a perfectly arranged bouquet, slowly unpicked and unraveled tonally. The transformation from an image to an object extends to the deliberate undoing and establishing of new materiality, flawed and transcendental.’ Exhibiting for the third time with Southern Guild, Stanislaw Trzebinski says that his traditional role of working predominantly as an artist rather than a designer means that Transformation offers him the exact platform on which to illustrate the blurring line between the two disciplines. ‘This space allows me to express myself in ways that I could not have done before, in a manner that lets go of the restraints that my “pure art” places on me,’ he explains. Transformation takes place at Southern Guild Gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town until 20 February. The exhibition includes work by Adam Birch, Chuma Maweni, Conrad Hicks, David Krynauw, Dokter and Misses, Guy du Toit, Jesse Ede, John Vogel, Madoda Fani, Otto Du Plessis, Sanell Aggenbach, Stanislaw Trzebinski, Trevor Potter and Xandre Kriel.

Less than four years after Jonathan Davies - the restauranteur behind the Michelin-starred ‘The Crown at Whitebrook’ in Wales was handed the reins by Sir De Villiers Graaff, the estate owner. The restaurant has since achieved the World Luxury Restaurant Awards 2016 for the Best Scenic Restaurant (Luxury Setting) in South Africa. Chef Ian Bergh & Sous Chef Garth Davids conducts two services a day between Tuesday and Saturday with different menus for Lunch and Dinner. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill

The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the first and the largest in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. When it comes to business mantra’s, the most apt for Katherine Mary Pichulik, creative director and founder of bespoke accessories brand, Pichulik, would be along the lines of, ‘behind every successful woman is a team of women egging her on.’ Katherine’s beautiful pieces made of rope, precious metals and stones are pulled and stretched into the distinctive creations that have come to define her brand by a team of expert craftswomen from around the continent who she believes are the magicians that turn the otherwise industrial materials into beautiful covetable adornments. ‘We are committed to the brand, the team and the women who believe in the pieces. We trust this creative journey and truly believe that what we do at PICHULIK can have an impact on the way women feel about themselves,’ she says. Of course this extends to both the women who buy her pieces but also to those she employs. There’s a fundamental sense of sisterhood at the core of the brand and together with the values of femininity and empowerment form a critical thread that runs through all of Pichulik’s collections. ‘I think the best part of working in my studio is working with my team and the moments of great togetherness I feel with all my employees. And when everyone is stimulated and happy and we are all sharing connecting and creating. we’ve seen Who is Mak1one and where did the name come from? Who are you in 5 sentences? My birth name is Maxwell Southgate, where my alias originated from is from my grandfather, he called me Mak. I have fond memories with him, so it was natural to translate it into my alias. Who I am is too complicated for 5 sentences! *laughs* How did you get started in in Graffiti? I started out of necessity. The environment I lived in created that. There was nothing else but desolation and a bereft situation to embrace, but I found if you look at something derelict, but keep looking, you can find the beauty inside. Graffiti was the one beautiful creation that came out of the neighbourhood I grew up in and I wanted to show it to everyone else so they could see the beauty that I did. How long does a project take? It depends on the size and content of the project, so anywhere between 1 day to 1 month. There are other factors that contribute such as the actual location and surrounding community. The environments change and there are massive differences between doing graffiti in Camps Bay or in Mitchells Plein, and I need to fit into that environment. It is the understanding that people live there – when I leave, my mark stays behind, it is in their public space. It becomes a sense of public awareness, in this I need to adjust to the people I am around. What would you say your style is and what is your favourite piece so far? I believe my style is Conscious Style, meaning I truly deeply think about my art before I set out to complete it. As a graffiti artist, you are responsible to everyone. What you create is what people look up to. I practise Graffiti art which encompasses everything. I use my graffiti to bring the goodness out its people. I’d say my favourite piece has to be “My Ma Se Piece”, it comes from the word ‘masterpiece’ of course, but because of my dyslexia, it adds a touch of humour to it. It has a personal touch as it also is an inclusion of my mother, and I am a part of her. What is the difference between legal’ and illegal’ graffiti? To me, the traditional sense of ‘illegal’ it says it already. How I see ‘legal’ in the world I work in, is to uplift the oppressed. Now what needs to be understood is that oppression doesn’t mean poverty, oppression is the being held you where you are – inability to move forward in life. Money doesn’t necessarily buy happiness, and just because you have no money, it doesn’t mean you are sad. How do you feel about graffiti in our current environment here in Cape Town? I believe we are young as we are only about 30 years old. Culturally, bushman paintings are the original artists, so I ask this, when you are on the streets, are you really on the streets? What do you use as inspirations to create your work? The one and only teacher – Mother Nature. The Mother city. Mothers. Women. Enough said. Be what you say, and say what you call yourself. What do you feel is your greatest achievement in your work and life? Achieving stuff is easy, the real challenge is to help another achieve their own goals and success. Its why I do the workshops. If I can teach the philosophy I follow and someone else applies it to watch work – to see good things happen? It is a true achievement. The classes result in instant change. Hip is a form of intelligence and Hop is a form of movement.
What is one question nobody has ever asked you that you wish they had?
I find that words are cheap which is why I speak with my hands. Throughout my life, the lessons I’ve learned, trials and tribulations, learning about myself, changing myself, change things and change the world, I wish someone had asked me: “How did I do that?” - TLR

Duiker Island: Cape Fur Seals Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open,
especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Ultraviolet radiation consists of 3 wavebands: - UVC 100 - 280nm which is blocked by the Ozone layer - UVB 280 - 320nm and - UVA 320 - 400NM According to a Survey that was conducted in the UK on 1500 female travellers, it was revealed t hat 22% would not use sunscreen and provided the following reasons: • They are of opinion that they do not burn; • Sunscreen is too expensive; • The sunscreen does not work. Based on the above it is important that the emphasis should be placed on the importance of daily Solar Ultraviolet Radiation [DUVR]. Those people who have intermittent DUVR are more likely to develop basal cell Cancer or skin malignant melanoma than those people who have a continuous lifetime exposure as they are more likely to develop squamous cell Carcinoma. Melanoma numbers are growing more rapidly than any other cancer in the UK, USA and Australia and are doubling every one or two decades.
THE SUN PROTECTION FACTOR (SPF) CONCEPT The sun protection factor [SPF]is a figure calculated by the amount of Ultra Violet Radiation [UVR] required to cause sunburn on the protected skin with sunscreen applied relative to

the amount of UVR required to cause sunburn on the unprotected skin (without sun screen). SPF is not related to time of sun exposure but to amount and intensity which varies from time of day and latitude in the world where sun exposure is occurring. Logically a higher SPF provides more sunburn protection and for a greater period of time. It also protects against UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deeper and are associated with aging and skin cancers. UVA protection should be at least 1/3 of the SPF and is measured by a star rating system. The ideal product would have SPF 30 plus a 4-5 star rating. Most people only apply half of what is needed.
APPLICATION GUIDE: • It should be 2mg/cm2 • Two tablespoons for an average person should be applied 20 minutes prior to exposure and be reapplied every few hours or after swimming, even if it is stated to be waterproof. • This equates to slightly more than half a teaspoon to each of the head and neck, right arm and left arm. Use slightly more than a teaspoon on each of the Chest and Tummy, the Back as well as the Left and Right leg! People should still only expose their skin to as much sun as they would without protection.
