he Oakland Athletics welcome the Bay Area Greek American greater community to the Oakland Coliseum on Thursday, June 7 at 7:05 p.m. for the first annual Greek Heritage Night. The A’s will be playing against the Kansas City Royals.

Festivities include a pregame mini-festival on the plaza featuring food trucks with Greek-inspired food items, Greek music, an HJ table, and more surprises before the game.

Costumed dancers from Oakland to San Jose, San Francisco, Novato, and more will come together in center field for the largest Greek folk dance

in Oakland Coliseum history before the first pitch.

Choral singers from the Bay Area Greek Orthodox choirs will also be on hand to sing the National Anthem and bouzouki artist Mike Kutulas will offer a

new rendition to “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” during the 7th inning stretch.

Finally, 95.7 The Game’s Anna Kagarakis will be the roving reporter for the evening as well. To purchase tickets and

Coming Home, Greek Heritage Night Dear Readers, Evan Zes has been busy taking New York by storm ever since he left his native San Jose, CA many years ago to pursue his studies and career in acting. This month, Frosene he’s thrilled to bring his one-man show back home for one Phillips night only. For those that remember the famous Dionne Warwick song, yes, he knows the way to San Jose! That, Editor however, is not the rest of the story because he’s off to the ultimate homeland after that – Athens, Greece. Please turn to page 4 for the rest of his amazing and fun story.

This month, the greater San Francisco Bay Area kicks off its first Greek Heritage Night with the Oakland Athletics and the Hellenic Journal will be right there to cover this debut. Inspired by Nick Larigakis, President of the American Hellenic Institute, who has hosted a similar event with the Phillies for the past five years, the Oakland A’s mascot, Stomper, is preparing to don a Greek costume too. Evan Zes brings his one-man hit show Rent Control home to San Jose and to the homeland in Athens, Greece

N

EW YORK – Rent Control, the Off Broadway hit written and performed

by Evan Zes, is a personal story of survival as a struggling actor living in the heart of New York City. Evan is bringing his one-man show to the Tabard Theatre in San Jose, CA for a onenight exclusive engagement on Thursday, June 14 at 8 p.m. before heading to Athens, Greece June 20-30.

Born and raised in San Jose in the San Francisco Bay Area, actor/writer Zes portrays some 30 different characters in this wildbut TRUE one-man-play that recounts a period in his life as he struggled to survive, live and pursue his acting career in New York City.

“Well this crazy thing that happened to me,” writes Zes on his website, “as it was happening, I thought to myself, ‘Pay attention cuz one day this is going to make a great story. It’s not a great story now because it’s happening to me and I want to die. But someday…”

Well as luck would have it, “someday” eventually arrived and he lived to tell about it. “I didn’t die,” he says. “Now, I’m glad that crazy thing happened to me because I wrote a play about it.”

When Evan falls backwards into one of the few remaining rent-controlled apartments in NYC, he finds a way to make money and pursue his dream, turning the apartment into a lucrative Airbnb scheme - that is, until his moneymaking scheme backfires threatening to ruin his life. This cautionary tale has had audiences howling with laughter and at the same time on the

edge of their seats. Critics have called it "...cheerfully profane," a "...surprise thriller" and "... dangerously hilarious".

Rent Control had back-to-back sold out runs beginning with its debut at the 2016 New York International Fringe Festival and following with the 2016 Fringe Encore Series at Soho Playhouse.

Evan has since performed the show at Penguin Repertory Theatre in Stony Point, New York, The Rye Arts Center in Rye, New York, Cleveland Playhouse,

Hartford Stage, The Complex Theatre in Hollywood, The Greek Cultural Center in Astoria, Queens, and Teatro Jaco in Jaco Costa Rica.

It was at Evan’s performance in Astoria that caught the eye of Emmy awardwinner and Yale Drama School trained actor/writer Yannis Simonides, who spoke with him about taking Rent Control

to Greece. Simonides is the founder and director of the Greek Theater (Elliniko Theatro), an international performing arts organization based in New York and Athens.

When asked recently about any updates to the play for the Athens performances, Zes told The National Herald that “the Athens version will have more about his grandparents and their immigration to America,” noting there is a “bigger pay off at the end.”

Evan is thrilled to be bringing the show to his hometown in San Jose first, where his parents, Tikey and Teddy Zes, still reside along with family and friends.

2018 Los Angeles Greek Film Festival Announces Premieres

T

he 12th Annual Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF) has revealed its 2018 program selection after reviewing a record 175 film submissions. The Festival runs June 4-10 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and includes 11 feature films, 15 documentaries, 27 shorts, as well as industry-lead roundtables, panels and masterclasses.

LAGFF celebrates the best new films from Greek filmmakers worldwide and promotes Greek cinema and cultural exchange while bridging the gap between the filmmakers and Hollywood.

“Greek Cinema continues to impress and produce,” explains Artistic & Festival Director

Aristotle Katopodis.

“Greek filmmakers keep winning major awards at international film festivals and we are proud to host over 50 of the best and most innovative Greek films from around the world, for the 12th time. Greece is vigorously entering the incentives arena for international productions, and filming in Greece is one of our themes to explore this year.”

Themes for the 2018 Festival include Music and how it informs Greek films; Greeks in the Academy, a tribute to the Greek artists who have received an Academy Award or Oscar Nomination since 1935; and, Filming in Greece, the new financing laws, incentives and rebates.

Opening Night (June 4 at 7 p.m.) begins with a screening of

by Tassos Boulmetis at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater. “1968” is the story of how the wellknown Greek basketball team A.E.K. founded in 1924 by refugees from Constantinople, beat SLAVIA of Prague to win the European Cup at Kallimarmaro Stadium, and changed Greek history forever.

The evening launches the strategic collaboration of LAGFF and the newly established UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture. The screening will be followed by Q & A with Boulmetis (a Bruin alumnus) and a reception in his honor.

premiere of Marios Piperides’ comedy “Smuggling Hendrix” will open LAGFF at the Egyptian on June 6. The award winning film recently garnered “Best International Narrative Feature” at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival. Filmmakers will be in attendance, and the red carpet evening includes the screening, a catered reception in the Egyptian’s iconic courtyard and a special performance by popular singer Ariana Savalas.

This delightful comedic film involves seven friends who meet for dinner on a Friday night. An idea emerges.

Every text and call they receive through the night must be shared with the whole group. When the game forces complete transparency, secrets are revealed and relationships are deeply threatened.

The Orpheus Awards are given to the outstanding new films in the dramatic, documentary and short film category. The theme of this year’s ceremony is “The Academy of Greeks”, paying tribute to Greek artists who have received an Academy Award or Oscar Nomination since 1935. The Best Supporting Actor of “West Side Story”, George Chakiris, will be one of the honorees this year with actress Rita Moreno presenting his Award.

Takis Kokotas Band Recording artist and bandleader Takis “Kokotas” Stathoulis is one of the most sought-after entertainers on the Greek music scene. Based in Los Angeles, CA, his fun-loving and charismatic personality keeps audiences returning for more. A staple at the Los Angeles Greek Fest and celebrity events, the band has kept the glendis and festivals dancing throughout the country. Musician Draws Inspiration from Greek Roots

A

thena Andreadis is a melting pot of sorts. Born in London, raised in Thessaloniki and currently living in Los Angeles, the criticallyacclaimed musician calls her homeland a “magical” place.

Andreadis’ first album debuted 10 years ago and has since lead to a robust music career.

From albums produced in the UK, US and Greece, to collaborations with fellow acclaimed artists and an invitation to join the voting assembly for the Grammys, Andreadis said her success comes from years of dedicated hard work and trusting her instincts.

Ready For The Sun, released early last year, has drawn positive feedback as her first US record.

Although fans of her music appear worldwide, Andreadis said she remembers her childhood in Greece with particular fondness.

“Growing up in Greece was wonderful and very inspiring,” Andreadis said. “I could see Mount Olympus from my window.”

The musician said she draws much inspiration from her homeland and its “magical” quality.

that land,” Andreadis said. “You know the sunshine, the islands, the food… a lot of poets and writers have written about the lights of Greece and how clearly you can see there and the energy.”

For centuries, Greece has been at the heart of innovation and art. That art may come in many forms, whether they are in philosophy, architecture, or music. Andreadis said she is inspired by poetry and beauty in nature. She said that the Greek heritage is one that has not only had a huge influence on her but on modern day society.

“It’s worth checking out our heritage because it’s a huge influence,” Andreadis said.

“What I embraced and realized, especially after I left, is our poets and our writers. It’s our culture.

So to go and read these people, some of the greats, is really important and I try as much as I can to go back.”

Her music has referenced ancient Greek mythology and elements of the land. Greek instruments and rhythms also appear in different songs and albums.

“You can probably hear the Greek influence but it’s subtle because I’ve spent half my life abroad and half my life in Greece,” she said. “I am a combination of both cultures and that comes through in music.”

Andreadis said that her cultural diversity comes from years spent in both the UK and Greece. This mixture of

countries, cultures and languages has created some unique musical productions.

“There was an interesting moment creatively when I tried to combine my Greek and English roots in a very direct way in a song called ‘Inside Out’ in my very first record Breathe With Me. I used a zeibekiko rhythm against an English melody and track,” Andreadis said. “That was very funny because my band was from the UK and my producer was Greek and I kind of brought the two together to see what would happen if worlds collided.”

Earlier in Andreadis’ career she was approached by a British TV company to produce a documentary film about her life and career. After following her tour and career, she made sure the feature, “Athena: My Music”, included her time in Greece.

“I said, well if you want to make a documentary about me you have to come to Greece where it started,” she said.

However, Andreadis added that the Greece she experienced while growing up has since changed.

“There was kind of an innocence (in Greece)] when I was growing up. There wasn’t much crime. It was a very different time,” she said. “It’s still a beautiful place. I love going there and recharging. There’s nothing like the Greek islands

(and) the Greek seas. I have to go back every summer.”

Although her passion in music started as early as five years old, Andreadis said her parents encouraged her to pursue a more stable career in college. However, after getting a business degree, she decided to finally follow her dreams and pursue a music career.

“Sometimes we get confused (on) what is our authentic voice and what is what we’re supposed to do and we’ll often buy into things that we’re supposed to do and it might not be the (right) thing for us,” Andreadis said.

“We are all such amazing beings with a unique gift.”

While her parents may not have initially supported her venture into the music world, Andreadis said that after seeing her ambition and commitment they became huge supporters.

“For many years I didn’t have the emotional support, the financial support from my family, but eventually when they saw I was really serious about it… they really embraced it,” she said.

Andreadis said that what is most important in pursuing your passion is finding your authentic voice and pursuing your trade with persistence and hard work.

“I can speak firsthand for having followed my dream, it’s not an easy path. You have to be very determined, very dedicated, very clear why you’re doing it,” Andreadis said. “I really believe that we can achieve or fulfill our life’s purpose if we really want it… we all have something very precious to offer this world.”

EXPLORER HONORED A bronze bust of 16th Century Cephalonian seafarer Ioannis Phokas, known as Juan de Fuca, who sailed in the service of Spain, is now on permanent display in the Museum of Vancouver, B.C. Crafted by well-known Greek sculptor Ioannis Bardis, the statue was unveiled on April 24, 2018. In 1592 Juan de Fuca discovered the strait which bears his name. The waterway serves as the boundary between the United States and Canada, with Vancouver Island, British Columbia to the North and the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state to the South.

The explorer is revered by both the Greek-American and GreekCanadian communities, as well as the general public. In Seattle, the AHEPA chapter is called Juan de Fuca, and on both sides of the strait there are parks, buildings, geologic features, fairs and festivals with his name.

Following his retirement in 1991, Father James and Presvytera Catherine moved to Palm Desert, California where he served as the priest of the Saint George parish.

Father James was predeceased by Presvytera Catherine who reposed in the Lord on Pascha in 2017. Sadly, six months later, Father James would lose his youngest son, Constantinos (Takie) to cancer.

He is survived by his children William (Rebecca), Diakonissa Maria (Deacon John) Thrasher, Angelo (Mary), and daughterin-law Nickolette. Father James was also blessed with 12 grandchildren and 20 greatgrandchildren, with one more expected in the coming months.
