The meaning of our logo is divided into two parts, "Renova-terra".

- The word "Renew" comes from the verb renew and its meaning is to make something look new but usingpreviouslyusedmaterials.

Joining both words would leave us the message of Reusingmaterialstotakecareoftheearthandthus obtainagreenerworld.

Recycling is an important process that helps us reduce our environmental impact and use resources more efficiently. It consists of separating and processing used materials to turn them into new products. The main goal of recycling is to prevent materials from ending up in landfills, where they can take many years to decompose and releasetoxicsubstancesintotheenvironment.

Did you know that many materials such as paper, glass, metal and plastic can be recycled? In this magazine we will be explaining to you in depth what recycling is and everything that is caused to theenvironmentbynotpracticingit.

Recycling contributes to taking care of our planet and preserving natural resources, the stability of theplanetisinyourhands!

Introduction

What is recycling?

Recycling is a process in which materials that are considered waste are transformed into new products, in order to reduce the use of raw materials, conserve energy and reduce the amount of wastesenttolandfills.

Recycling is not only important on an individual level, but it is also critical on a community and global level.

Recyclingisafundamental practice in waste management, since it contributes significantly to the conservation of the environment.

In summary, recycling is an effective tool to reduce the environmental impact of waste, conserve natural resources and promote a more sustainable circular economy. And thus contribute to the care of ourplanet.

Importance of recycling

Recyclingisafundamental activity to preserve the environment and promote sustainability. It consists of transforming used materials into new products, thus reducing the need to extract more natural resources and decreasing the amount of waste that is sent to landfills.

Therearemultiplereasons why recycling is important. First of all, by recycling, you save natural resources. Many of the materials that are discardedcanbereused.

Secondly, recycling contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. By recycling materials instead of producing them from scratch, less energy is required. Another important benefit of recycling is that it creates jobs and contributes to the economy. The recycling industry generates employment in the collection, sorting and processing of recyclable materials.

Why practice recycling?

The continuous increase in the human population and excessive consumption patterns based on a linear economy have led us to excessive waste generation. In this way, recycling emerges as a possible alternative for managing them. Cardboard, paper, bottles, clean and dry plastic, glass and tin containers are some of the many materials that we canrecycle.

Reduces CO2 emissions and contributes to climate change mitigation: The extraction and transformation and processing of materials contribute greatly to GHG emissions(greenhousegases)andindustryisoneofthe main culprits. Recycling activities require less energy than the production of virgin materials, thus contributingtolowerGHGemissions.

Create new jobs: The waste recycling process involves the participation of workers, since the materials must be classified and separated prior to their transformation.

Recycling statistics in Panama

A report issued by the United Nations for the environment, it was calculated that per year Panama discharges 102,229 tons of garbage into the sea, this with only almost 4.3 million inhabitants.

The Cerro Patacón sanitary landfill receives 2 million tons ofwasteperdayandisclassified as an environmental and sanitary disaster derived from the waste management model, endangeringpublichealth.

However, all is not lost, the "Programa basura cero " is based on the definition of a general objective linked to 4 major components and 14 specific objectives with their respective expected results and goals.

Withthisprogram,the recycling statistics in Panamaareasfollows:

Waste statistics in Panama

A study carried out by OPS concluded that the generation of solid waste in Panama was 1.34 kg/day, including domestic waste, commercial and industrial waste, and waste from health establishments. Practicallyallsolidwasteis being burned in the open air in 47 landfills distributed throughout the nationalterritory.

Recording the amounts of waste we were able to create the followinggraph:

This graph tells us that despite the recycling activities in Panama, there is still a high rate of waste that produces serious consequences for both the planet and public health.

Recycling places in Panama

Today we have the privilege of having some recycling centersinPanama, someofthemare:

1)FasPanamá

They have a center at local 216, in theCityofKnowledge.Theyreceive plastic, glass, paper, batteries cardboard, tin, aluminum and electronicscrap.

2)Botellasdeamor(BDA)

It is the name of the foundation and also of the plastic bottles that are filled with more plastic and recycled to later become material to build urban furniture such as a children'splayground.

3)Reciclaportufuturo

It is a project of the Ancón Foundation, in partnership between the public and private sectors. The materials they receive are: plastic containers 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6; aluminum and tin cans; bond paper, newspaper, cardboard and tetra pak. All materials must be cleananddry.

DIDYOU KNOW...?

Recycling a single plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60W light bulb for at least 6 hours.

Health benefits of recycling

“The selective recycling of garbage constitutes a crucial element of public health and quality of life, not a simple ecological fashion”, according to the Professor of the University of Murcia, Juan Carlos Argüelles. In his opinion, "correct separation at sources guarantees that the entire waste treatment and recovery process will function correctly, with minimal damage to the perishable resources of thismistreatedplanet."

In an article published in the newspaper La Verdad, this specialist assures that "effective recycling leads to notable economic savings viataxes." It is evident, therefore, that recycling is healthy, since it is key to reducing CO2 in the atmosphere and, therefore, reducing pollution and as a consequence, for example, of a lower impact on all respiratorydiseases.

Benefits of our project

The IMPORTANCE of our projectistomotivateand encourage our classmates and teachers to apply recycling in their day to day. Recycling is increasingly important and relevant because in this way there is less consumption of polluting materials for our planet, which today requires our care for its conservation and with recycling we would achievejustthis.

In our project we have created a solar panel or kitchen, which allows us to have a much more accessible way of preparing food or doing things as basic as boiling water, without the need to use stoves or electrical appliances that are often pollutingfortheplanet.

That is why carrying out this project is something that we consider very important, starting to encourage the people around us to apply recyclingintheirlives.

One of the benefits that we would obtain would be that, by applying recycling, we would be achieving not only a less polluting way of preparing our food, but also a much less expensive and more accessible option for lowincomepopulations.

Process:

For the elaboration of our prototype we carried out four essential steps. The first of them consists of polishing the antenna enough to make it shine to thus form a pseudo-mirror. To do this, we carry out a pre-treatmentoftheantenna,cleaningthe dirt and sanding it as much as possible to obtain a concave surface that is as smooth aspossible.

Thesecondstep, alittlelesslaborious, but more expensive, was to glue several strips of aluminum foil tape to the satellite dish after performing the treatment, previouslymentionedinthefirststep, and thus achieve a much more efficient concavereflection..

Then our third step was to cover the entire surface of the antenna with individual flat mirrors.Todothiswefabricateeachpiecewith a large mirror using a glass cutter and glue themtothesatellitedishwithglasssilicone.

Finally, our fourth step was to build the place where we will support the pot in which we will prepare food or boil water. For this we use metal rods, a horn feeder and a piece of wood, we weld all the parts together and proceed to testourprojectbyplacingitinaplaceexposed tothesun.

Conclusion

Recycling is a fundamental practice to protect ourplanet. By engaging in recycling and encouraging its adoption on an individual and societal level, we can significantly contribute to conserving natural resources, reducing pollution, and buildingamoresustainablefuture.

Science week and its theme emphasized recycling, made us aware of the fact that the stabilityoftheplanetisinourhands. Practicing recycling helps us reduce pollution oftheplanetandpromoteahealthierworld.

In addition, the fact of carrying out our project inordertoreplacesomethingwithanotherthat is healthier for the planet, was of great interest tous.
