HelixReflects As we reflect on the past year, pride is the one word that comes to mind. In the face of a global pandemic, #TeamHelix members showed up every day to give their best. The talent and tenacity of each individual was highlighted in the past 12 months. We are proud to be #TeamHelix, a community of highly ambitious individuals who don’t shy away from challenge. We are successful because our team members are successful. Our ability to navigate through the unique circumstances of the past year, was due in large part to our tenacious team members and our deliberate, intentional proper planning. Our Estimating Groups have worked tirelessly to ensure we have a substantial backlog to carry us into 2022, our Talent Acquisition Team has continued to recruit top talent from across the nation to expand our thinking, and our Learning & Development Department is adding new training opportunities regularly to support our current employees’ personal and professional growth. We are leveraging BIM, IT, and Prefab more than ever before. All of these intentional pre-planning actions have put us in a position to continue to be trailblazers in this industry. Thank you to members of the field for allowing us to count on you. We see your ambition and passion in all you do. Helix wouldn’t exist without all of your hard work day in and day out. We look forward to continuing to support you in 2022. We are proud of all that has been accomplished over the past 35 years and are proud of what we have done to be amply prepared for what’s on the horizon.

PA: I would’ve enrolled in Law School and become a Corporate Attorney KW: I’d definitely be a Fashion Designer. I’ve always thought of myself as thriving in New York City and I love dressing up. Or I would be a travel advisor so I could see the thing world for a living.

MA: The people, and more specifically, my team. They show up every day being their true selves. I love working with our field team and the SoCal Operations, National, Manufacturing and BIM teams. DS: I get to be challenged every day; working for Helix is never boring. The best part is that I have a great team that supports me through this growth. I know, if I want more Helix will give me more and I have good people to lean on when I need help. PA: I love that it is an exciting place to work because we are adventurous and confident in what we do. We never shy away from a challenge. The type of people that work here make this company great. KW: I love our tight-knit group in the MidAtlantic. We have each other’s backs and there will always Powerline | Fall 2021

What’s something we might not know about you? MA: I am tiny, but mighty! I strength train regularly and frequently participate in crossfit competitions. I can squat 200 pounds and press 300 pounds. This year Helix is proud to announce we earned the highest distinction from STEP, the Diamond Award. This achievement highlights our dedication to ensuring we are relentless in our pursuit of a safe workforce. It’s a prime example of our commitment to a growth mindset. We

Safety for us isn’t just compliance, it’s compassion. We look forward to continuing our dedication to improve total human health and maintain our safety culture.

FEATURED PROJECTS VCCCD Moorpark College Renewables Group Project Manager: Holly Dantzler Superintendent: Scott Shirley General Contractor: Helix Electric Owner: Forefront Power

“This was an extremely large site with a very tight budget, and had a lot of working variables including a particularly needy owner rep. While there were many obstacles, our field crew did an amazing job and brought the project completion in the originally scheduled timeline and under budget. Kudos to Scott Shirley, Victor Del Campo and their field crew.

Acting as the Prime Contractor on these 3.13MW solar parking structures, #TeamHelix knew manpower was going to be an issue, but we didn’t let this deter us. Instead, members of Operations and Recruiting worked together to get it staffed. Helix was able to engineer the entire project, manage the construction process, and self-perform all electrical work. Even with employees new to Helix and to the solar industry, we finished the project with no safety issues and on schedule.

TeamHelix LA has had the unique challenge of working with two separate electrical engineering firms with different requirements. GMEP is the EOR for the residential scope and MEYERS+ is the EOR for the commercial highrise and underground parking. They have not let this slow their momentum though. In fact, this team is breaking Helix records, roping the residential units at a pace of approximately 30 units per week! In addition to breaking company roping records, this project is pushing the limits with their use of prefab, including complete modular builds of electrical rooms. Garett Williams explains his excitement about the use of so much prefab, saying “For this job, there is a lot of prefab going on, which makes this job different. For example, I installed two panels in just an afternoon, but it would have taken a lot longer (without prefab).” Also, I heard there’s going to be a Trader Joe’s (downstairs), which is cool.” Nothing beats good prefab and prospects for a new Trader Joe’s!

great. We work as one and get the job done as a team. Most importantly, we treat one another like ohana. Ohana means family and no one gets left behind.” He started his journey as an electrician through the ABC apprenticeship program 4 years ago and hasn’t looked back. He appreciates all the learning, improvement, and growth that #TeamHelix has supported for him since his start with us over 3 years ago. Fun Fact: If Bryant had to wake up every morning to the same song for the rest of his life he would pick “Danza Kuduro” by Don Omar.

Joe has come a long way in his 46year electrical construction career. He started as a shop boy, worked as an electrician, contracted on his own, worked as RME for a startup company (now known as Watt Stopper), was an electrical designer, estimator, Operations Manager, and now Project Manager with our very own #TeamHelix Sacramento! This past year has been the hardest he has ever had, losing 3 close family members including his wife of 44 years. He is grateful to be with a

caring team that supports him through it all and says, “I now know what it is like to work for real contractor and being surrounded with talented team members. I feel blessed to be here and intend on working at Helix until I’m ready for retirement.” Fun Fact: Joe has a dragon tattoo on his calf because he considers the dragon to be his spirit animal.

After recently celebrating 14 years with Helix, Gladys has had a multitude of experiences to reflect upon. She started as a green PE with an electrical engineering background and has since developed into a largely successful Project Manager for our Industrial Team. She attributes her ability to grow from not even knowing what an EMT conduit was into where she is today to her good PMs and Superintendents that took “time mentoring me and were very patient answering my stupid

questions. I enjoyed supporting multiple projects, tried my best to keep up with what my PM/Superintendent was talking about and made a point to visit jobsites as often as I could so I could learn quickly.” Fun Fact: The number one thing on Gladys’ bucket list is to drive across America in a motorhome.

GLADYS N.

Project Manager

HOLLY D.

Project Manager

Holly embodies the Helix growth mindset. She started in Phoenix over a decade ago as a Project Coordinator. Since, she has mastered that role, the Project Engineer role, and the Project Manager role. She has worked in various departments from Distribution to Solar. She attributes her vast success to her ability to be a self-starter and ask her willingness questions stating, “If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you. I took a path with Helix that is different than a lot of individuals, however, I took

it upon myself to learn as much as I could and help in any way that I could in order to learn as much as I could. Now, 13 years later, I am very happy with my path and progress with Helix.” Fun Fact: If Holly could sign any athlete from any team to a lifetime contract with her favorite team she would pick Tom Brady. “Although I am not the hugest fan, his ability to continue to perform at the highest level, well into his 40’s, speaks volumes.”

We checked in with Mark Mandarelli, Chief Information Officer to see how things have been going since we last chatted for the Spring 2021 edition of PowerLine In our last article you discussed the importance of data and leveraging it to make business decisions. What was the key finding from the renewed focus on data? How is your team addressing this?
