NEWS FLASH

HELIX ELECTRIC
AURIC SYMPHONY PARK
FALL 2023

Dear Helix Family,

As the summer comes to a close and we approach the final quarter of 2023, we are once again proud of the hard work and dedication of our Helix Electric team. While some in the contracting industry have faced the uncertainty of financials markets, and the challenge of a dwindling labor force, our team has focused on keeping our company strong, being responsive to the challenges our customers face, and providing the resources so team members can feel supported, make plays for each other, and make great decisions in the field every day.

The first half of this year has marked an important time for our company. We have continued to grow our reach in the west, we have grown our team, and we have grown our business and our backlog. And we have done so in a consistent and profitable manner. The opportunity for our continued growth is born from the opportunity provided in recent and past success. And in the first half of 2023 we have had plenty. Our work has been recognized with several NAIOP Spotlight Winners, including Aspen Heights @ Symphony Park, UnCommons, and Lotus of Siam. Lotus of Siam was also given a Merit Award ENR. Individually Lawrence Fry was recognized as Safety Director of the Year and Helix Electric Nevada was once again award Top Place to Work by the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Last of all, but very much worth mentioning, our backlog continues to grow and sits at record high.

Our success this year has not been limited to job sites across Nevada and Utah. We share our victories with our communities, and I am proud to share with you that together, our golf tournaments in Las Vegas and Reno generated over $120,000 for various charities in our local cities. This is who we are as a company and the ability to give back is a credit to you and our entire Helix Family.

Last, at our Annual Retreat this past spring we were able to share important and necessary future leadership changes in our company. Changes to support the growth mentioned above. While our formal transition with Mike Vita and Cody Kinnison will not take place until January 2024 preparations have begun, and certain steps of our transition plan have already taken place. Most notably Cody has relocated to the Las Vegas Valley. While he will continue to spend a great deal of time in Reno being responsible for the success of Reno Operations during this transition, his home base is now our Las Vegas office. This growth of our leadership signifies an exciting time for our company. The opportunity to grow our leadership and more effectively support the growth we have experienced in our operation. We will continue to update the company as the transition progresses.

Finally, as we approach the fourth quarter of the year, I want to take this last moment to thank you. Not just for all your hard work, but for your continued trust and confidence in Helix Electric. I speak for all our executive leaders when I say that it’s our privilege to serve you - we remain committed to providing you with the highest level of support. As always, we value your feedback and are continuously working to improve our process and services to better serve your needs. If you have any suggestions or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or any member of our Executive Team. Thank you again for all you do. Together, we are….

ESTIMATING & DESIGN BUILD

The third quarter of 2023 has been one of the most exciting and successful periods for the estimating team.

Beginning with the award of the Bonanza High School project, the Major Projects Estimating Team went on a tear, winning multiple CCSD projects and being named as the successful Electrical Subcontractor on two more just this past week. These wins include first time wins for two of the newest members of the department, Alex Dubrovin and Dara Wells. In addition to the school projects, we had major wins on industrial projects and much needed work at Hill AFB for our Salt Lake Branch. Juan and his team have already secured almost $100 million in new work for the company.

After a slow start to the year in securing work for the Salt Lake market, the awards in the third quarter have already guaranteed that we will exceed the annual goal we originally established. Between the major project wins at Hill AFB and the numerous multi-family projects, the work secured will exceed $40 million and significantly add to the backlog for that office. Porter Campbell’s tireless efforts in conjunction with Nathan Goodrich and his entire team have helped us to develop true customer relationships, and the results have finally started to show.

The team is also ahead of the pace in securing work for Reno, as well as for Special Projects. Our team of savages, led by Will Fletcher have already secured more work for Department 27 than the annual goal for the department. They have also secured several excellent projects for both Major and Special projects that have put us on pace to exceed our procurement goals across the board.

The importance of our Design Build department was reinforced again this quarter as well. The success we have had has been in part attributable to the ability to perform in this key market segment. In Utah, projects like Skytrac, Inn at Sundance and two of the larger Hill AFB projects have been secured by providing design build and design assist services as a value add for our clients. This has helped us in being recognized as a professional contractor in the Utah market. The continuing efforts of the Design Build team on projects include the Sysco project, Crown Mesquite and numerous multi-family projects continue to separate us from much of our competition.

NATHAN GOODRICH OPERATIONS MANAGER SALT LAKE CITY

We’ve had some great accomplishments in the last several months. Two of which are being able to turn over the Red Lion Hotel Conversion and the Canyon’s Employee Housing projects. These two are especially personal for us in SLC because they’re both with R&O and they were some of our first projects we won here locally. These projects remind me of how important long-term relationships are. When we met with R&O over two years ago to discuss the possibility of us doing these jobs, it was Rick Z. with R&O who vouched for Helix to his Utah teams because of the good work we’ve done together over the years in Vegas.

Congrats to Nathan Sawyer, Kirt Svedin, Juan Guzman and the rest of the Red Lion team for successfully completing a very complex project. This job was finished on time and on budget. Renovating a 60-year-old building is always filled with lots of surprises, but the team took everything in stride and came up with solutions to make it a success. I also need to give a “shout out” to Andy Bedora on this project. He came up with a great idea to convert the existing 1200A busduct into 2400 Amps without replacing the original busduct. How? Easy, just separate the busduct in the middle and feed the top end with 1200 Amps.

Congrats to everyone who worked on the Canyon’s Employee Housing project. We are putting the final finishing touches on this project next week. Any project up in the mountains comes with unique challenges with weather and schedule, and this one had them all. We had to redesign the single line halfway through the project and still maintain the turnover dates for each of the seven buildings.

Any project up in the mountains comes with unique challenges with weather and schedule, and this one had them all. We had to redesign the single line halfway through the project and still maintain the turnover dates for each of the seven buildings.

As a result of everyone’s hard work on these two projects, we secured our next projects with R&O. We’ve been awarded and are just finishing the design for Skytrac and Inn at Sundance. Skytrac is a manufacturer of chair lifts for ski resorts.

We recently promoted Derek Furgeson to be our new General Superintendent. We’re excited for him and what he will bring to our office!

Erik Spielvogel recently started with us as Senior Project Manager - He is a great fit for our office and brings with him a great attitude and wealth of knowledge and experience. Welcome Erik!

This summer has been a productive time for our estimating group. Here’s a list of the projects we’ve recently been awarded.

· Skytrac with R&O

· Inn at Sundance with R&O

· Millcreek West Apartments – First project in Utah with Layton

· G3 Apartments – First project with Kier Construction

· Hill AFB GBSD TACC – Mortenson

We have lots of great forward momentum in Utah and are excited for the new opportunities and projects headed our way.

NOTEWORTHY PROJECTS

Creech AFB | ATS Upgrades & MTS Installation

This project consists of the integration of a new ATS bypass system with Manual Transfer switches to isolate the power. This will allow the military to maintain the ATS and system, working safely, without the need to lose power to the facility. This was a Design Build system and included the units to be installed on three locations at Creech Air Force base in Indian Springs.

RED ROCK, LOTUS OF SIAM:

Project Team:

•Project Manager: Wade Brasuell

•Superintendent: Robby Jacobs

•Project Engineer: Allen Castillo

•Project Assistant: Donna Rose

•General Contractor: Taylor International

This has been a very challenging project because it needed to have as little amount of downtime and power outages as possible. As Operations, we worked closely with Helix’s engineering team who have stepped up in creative ways to accommodate the owners’ request and use of the buildings. After thorough redesign and innovative ideas from the entire team, we were able to integrate two of the three locations without any issues. Our team is currently working on the final building integration which will be extremely complex. The current building that will be shut down is mission critical and will require outside of the box ideas. This shutdown will consist of 20 continuous hours of work to accomplish this difficult task.

• ⦁Superintendents - Tom Conelly & Tom Gallagher

SAFETY

My Life, My Lock & Our Best Incident Prevention Tool

“My Life, My Lock” is our approach when it comes to our Lock Out & Tag (LO&T) procedures. Our Electrical Safety and LO&T policies are in the Helix Electric Written Safety and Health Program. They have specific requirements identifying who must install a lock. We require that each employee that could be exposed to the energy source must have their own individually keyed lock and accompanying tag installed. This practice was created to provide each exposed individual with protection that was independent of anyone else. Each of these exposed employees must also have completed Exposed Employee LO&T training and must be familiar with how lock out is managed on the project. It also includes who the LO&T Competent Person is. These employees should be able to communicate where and how they are isolated from the source of energy.

Pre-Task Plans (PTPs) are a critical preplanning tool employees complete prior to starting every task they perform. The PTP should be specific to the task and in the area where the work is being performed. This allows employees to identify the specific hazards associated with the activity. When multiple people are doing the same task in the same area, they should work together to create the PTP for the activity. Everyone in the crew should be involved in describing the task and identifying the hazards and proper controls. Employees need to work together and ask questions. The active dialogue will help employees find the safest and most efficient way to perform your task.

Once the PTP is completed, everyone on the crew should sign the form. Throughout the day employees need to evaluate their work area for changes. If a significant change occurs (i.e., you are going to use ladders instead of lifts, painters start painting in the area) you need to re-evaluate the hazards and if necessary, complete a new PTP identifying the new conditions. Incidents are more likely to happen when we deviate from the plan.

The PTP also has a box next to each name in the Crew Signature area for a Mid-Shift Review (MSR). The MSR is intended to be a quick review of the plan when the crew returns to the work area from lunch. This will serve as a reminder of the plan and the hazards. If you identify new hazards at the Mid-Shift-Review, you should update the PTP or complete a new one if necessary.

Supervisors should review their crew’s PTPs and are encouraged to ask open-ended questions of the crew to ensure all the hazards are properly identified and adequate controls are in place. After reviewing the PTP, supervisors are also encouraged to write down any adjustments they feel employees should include on the PTP. It helps employees understand their supervisor’s expectations. PTPs should be signed by supervisors daily.

SERVICE UTAH

TONY PETERSON | SERVICE DEPARTMENT MANAGER

2023 has been an outstanding year for the Utah Service Department with many of our goals within reach, and new ones being set every day!! We are currently looking to add another top qualified service technician to the team. We have added several new clients to the existing service base including Clean Joule, which our Service Tech David Mace, acquired because of a small service call at the CEO’s home. (You never know where new clients are!!) It is a startup company that is currently working with Utah State University to create a clean-burning, low emissions jet fuel. They have a new 8000 square foot manufacturing facility here in the Granary District that we have been making many improvements on. Another is Mitch Woods Construction Company, who is completing many new tenant improvements Summit Chiropractic Clinic which was completed by Helix. We finished another Sams Club rooftop AHU and RTU replacement that was perfectly executed over a two-week period of night shifts. (Great job by Ronald Blackburn and Marcello Gomez!) We are currently waiting for final approval from Provo City on plans for the new Allegiant Airways Maintenance and Commissary build-out project a 6000 square foot facility including a new office and warehouse areas – scope includes electrical, data and telecom and security piping.

As we move past the half year mark for 2023, our service technicians have made many strides towards their personal goals of education and professional growth. Ronald Blackburn is furthering his education - taking courses to become an Electrical Engineer and is looking forward to working for Helix Electric in Utah as part of the construction team when he obtains his degree. David Mace has targeted his own growth with the company helping the service department grow and eventually becoming a project manager within the service department. Staying with our core values is how we empower people to enjoy success.

The Construction Division, which is the heart of the company here in Utah, led by Nathan Goodrich, keeps us well infused with new customers and clients that are looking to sustain long term relationships.

We are looking forward to ending 2023 with more growth and completing projects for our clients in a fashion that only Helix Electric can provide.
