He's clearly posed in the bath, but is he a real-life bather or showerer? Speaking from a (bright red) hotel room in Belgium, where he's currently filming The Undertow, Dornan explained that he actually only moved rooms because the one he was originally given didn't have a bath. He's also quite fond of "opera baths". "A very good friend of mine came to our house for dinner once, and when he got home he said he was going to have an opera bath and asked me if I'd ever had one," he laughed, adding that his answer was a confused "no". "It's quite understandable, but you make a bubble bath - I'm a big lavender fan - and bring in a speaker and listen to opera. Maybe bring a little bottle of red wine and a bowl of M&Ms. I've done that a few times. It's extravagant and ridiculous, but it's the kind of thing I do when I'm away filming, so the kids can't come in and bother me." Apparently, he noted, bathing is “more convenient.”
Loewe’s campaign film, which also stars Sophie Wilde, is a celebration of the natural world, complete with a topless gardener, and Dornan is also excited to get outside. “I’m obsessed with golf. I was in Donegal, one of the most beautiful places in the northwest of Ireland, for the weekend,” he says. (For those interested, his handicap is nine.) “There aren’t many sports where you can walk around in beautiful landscapes for four hours with your friends, and I feel really spoiled by the island I’m on because you’re surrounded by beauty. I’ve been dying to get to Ireland because I’ve been doing this for over six months, so even though I’m no Bear Grylls, I love getting out.”
I meet him a week before he finishes filming The Undertow, and Dornan says he's probably the most exhausted he's ever been. Still, he's relishing the "huge" challenge of playing identical twins who have been separated for 17 years. "It's a really fun project and a completely different filming experience than I've ever had before," he says. "You're trying to play these two people, and bring out each other and make them independent, physically and in the way they move and interact and talk."
