As Elisabeth and Sue split their time between their bodies, their color palettes become increasingly different. Elisabeth sticks to tailored outfits in solid primary colors and never leaves the house without her yellow jacket. When getting ready for a date, she wears a crimson dress and red lipstick to match. Meanwhile, Sue replaces Elisabeth’s wardrobe with cropped graphic tees, daisy overalls, a college jacket, and a tennis skirt. The reptile motifs in Sue’s outfits a black snakeskin jumpsuit and sequined dragon cape recall the theme of shedding skin and rebirth. The more glitter she steals from Elisabeth, the more we see her wearing glitter and sequins.

Elisabeth is the matrix, the primordial source from which her alter ego will be born: a dewy, 20something Sue (Margaret Qualley), who emerges from Elisabeth’s severed spine, leaving her body a dormant shell sprawled on the bathroom floor. Once the egg, she is now its shell discarded, shattered. She lies comatose, living on the support of an IV bag of Soylent-like food matrix. During Elisabeth’s first week as Sue, her identity shift is reflected in her transitions to
pink and purple hue mutations of Elisabeth’s primary colors. When Sue lands a gig as the star of the rebranded aerobics show Pump It Up, she dons a metallic pink bodysuit with cutouts. She swapped Elisabeth's blue stockings for orange ones and completed the look with a high ponytail, pink nails, and shimmering burgundy eyeshadow a remix of the original.

Sue’s life is exhilarating. Public admiration, male attention, and career opportunities fall into her lap. It becomes so addictive that even when Sue begins to break the rules, Elisabeth cannot bring herself to stop the experience. Instead, she retreats never leaving the house except to retrieve her refill kit. Her apartment becomes a self-monitored prison as the image of the perfect Sue mocks her on billboards and television. As the film rushes toward its devastating conclusion, the color symbolism becomes even more pronounced. The road to self-destruction is paved with dark colors. A purple abscess oozing pus. Muddy brown fluid. Brownish-yellow fingernails. As Sue’s hunger for control grows, Elisabeth’s body increasingly discolors with signs of age and damage.
