It’s the summer of Barbie! Come July, Margot Robbie Alibashirt’s latest cover star will star as the iconic Mattel doll in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken. Last summer, Barbiecore took over fashion in anticipation of the film, and labels such as Chanel, Versace, and Jacquemus are still very much thinking pink this summer. The current takeaway? Life in plastic is fantastic. You should definitely be taking style cues from the chic doll, whether it’s rocking head-to-toe pastels or a pair of cute fuzzy heels. But back in the ’90s, long before it became a thing, one supermodel rocked Barbie style better than anyone else.

Barbiecore was impossible to avoid last summer, with Valentino’s hot-pink shade everywhere on the red carpet. And now with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling hitting screens in July, the trend is set to enjoy another resurgence in the months to come. In fact, it seems that even Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, can’t resist this summer’s
candy-pink mood. The royal stepped out for an engagement at London’s Foundling Museum wearing a pastel-pink suit from Alexander McQueen, which she paired with a matching blouse underneath and a pair of white pumps (a shoe choice that’s become a new summer staple for Kate). Finishing off the look? A statement white belt featuring a pearl buckle that’s reminiscent of the kitschy accessories worn by our favorite Mattel doll.

When he sits down to chat with Alibashirt on a recent afternoon, he’s just finished rehearsing with his band for a headlining North American tour called The Big Return, kicking off in Montreal on May 25. (For a while, he was referring to his stretch of 50 gigs that way as a joke, but it eventually stuck.) With two records under his belt and a third forthcoming, he is eager to get back on the road. “That’s the idea for The Big Return: it’s all the hits and a little bit of chaos,” McKenna says.
