At the Black Cow coffee shop in downtown Croton, McDonald sips an iced matcha latte and thinks about the Roses who came before her, a long list of one-name Broadway ladies: Ethel, Angela, Tyne, Bernadette, Patti. “How do you stand up to what’s gone before you?” McDonald asks. “I’m at peace with that. None of them did it the way the rest did. So you can add one more to that pile!”
Working with director George C. Wolfe, a six-time Tony winner who directed McDonald onstage in 2016’s Shuffle Along and last year’s Rustin, helped. “Audra is the living embodiment of talent, drive, and ambition, and she breaks out of the box,” Wolfe told me. “This woman is determined to uncover the truth of each character.” Joy Woods, the actress who will play Louise, grew up watching McDonald’s videos on YouTube and describes the prospect of playing opposite her now as surreal: “She becomes a conduit for any story. Her sense of surrender as a human being… you have to have a good heart for that.”
Swenson brought her two sons from a previous marriage, Bridger, 23, and Sawyer, 20, into the marriage, along with McDonald's oldest daughter, Zoe, 23, and the couple's daughter, Sally, 7, to form a large, blended family. "It feels very Brady Bunchy," says Swenson, who recently starred in Neil Diamond's musical A Beautiful Noise. With their older children out of the house, Swenson and McDonald take a "tag-you-re-it" approach with their youngest, balancing a Broadway and TV schedule with parenting. McDonald's mother also moved in next door a few years ago: "It takes a village, but we have a good village."
Swenson's mother had recently died of cancer, just months before McDonald's father died in a plane crash, and the two found a kind of solace in their grief. "Understanding the fragility of life, I don't want to look back and think I didn't pursue something," McDonald says, speaking of her career, but perhaps also of her romance. The two were married in the fall of 2012 at their home in Croton-on-Hudson. "This place in the fall forget it!" she gushes, gesturing toward the trees, today in the lush green of summer. Growing up in seasonless Fresno, she often dreamed of the leaves and pumpkins from the Charlie Brown Halloween specials she'd seen on TV.
