The housedress as we know it originated in the early 1920s. It is credited to Nell Donnelly Reed, an American woman who began sewing pleated dresses made of sturdy fabric to wear while cleaning and cooking. They were so popular with her friends that she began manufacturing them commercially, founding the Donnelly Garment Company with her husband. In fact, she was so successful that by the 1950s, her company had become the world's largest manufacturer of women's clothing. During this decade, the company achieved its final silhouette, which has remained more or less unchanged: short sleeves, fitted at the waist, and knee-length. While the
housedress is no longer a staple for working-from-home parents, it is still ubiquitous. "It's a uniform," Hardy says.

The dress comes in sizes XS to XXL, but thanks to strategically placed elastic in the back, it can fit a wide range of body types. "I wanted to bring a little bit of functionality, style, and genderneutrality, so yes, it's inspired by women's work, but it's not feminine or masculine," Hardy adds. The sleeves, for example, are cut wider, not only to allow for more movement, but also to allow people who don't normally wear dresses to use it as an outerwear.
