All the men in this play are named Peter. My Peter: Peter Rutter. Broadway Peter: Peter Gallagher. And our other wonderful actor, who plays all the other male roles in the play: Peter Francis James. It’s confusing and magical. My Peter… how did he react to finding himself in a play that was probably going to be transferred to Broadway? I should point out that he’s retired. He’s a psychiatrist, a Jungian psychoanalyst, so if he wasn’t retired, it would be difficult to reveal his personal life. But at this point in his life, it’s a great adventure. He’s a man of boundless curiosity. He’s written two books on sexual harassment. He’s testified in court on behalf of abused women. And he also knew that going back to this time in my life full of sadness, fear, and absolute joy would be healing for me and many others. He also happens to be a wonderful writer, and the emails he sent me when we were in love are in the play. His unwavering devotion and care when I was sick are also dramatized. For him, it was also “this out of that.”
Once we had a workshop and a cast, all we needed was a theater. Plays are very personal, so a big theater for a musical wouldn’t cut it. We needed something more intimate. I understand the

We did a two-week workshop in a loft on 42nd Street. It seemed like on every floor of the building, a different Broadway rehearsal was going on. Looking out the window, I could see Madame Tussauds. Next door was a store that sold every mug or T-shirt a tourist could want. A workshop was when the director put the play together. Every day I saw Stro bring scenes to life. I saw her teach Julianna Margulies to tap dance. I saw myself falling in love, almost dying, and surviving. Peter Gallagher asked me, “Are you okay? How are you feeling?” And I thought, This is the creativity that came out of that. This creative, joyful experience that came out of that trauma… That I lived to write it, to experience the process of making this play. And it was a very fun play.
