Early in the morning, I texted my new friend who I had been drinking with on Wednesday. We joked about how lucky he was to have a gas stove to make coffee and how I was having trouble with my electric stove. I also half-joked that I would contact him in case of emergency, although I didn’t think we would be unreachable for a few hours. I knew he lived nearby, but I didn’t know his address, only that he was on the other side of a large fallen tree that no one could get past. I texted him that I was stressed and needed food. If he got this message, could he send me his address? I tried to catch enough bars so my message could get through. When I got a bar, I wasn’t sure if he had service to receive it.

Meanwhile, I was starving. All I had in the house was a bottle of olive oil, a carton of skim milk, a bag of microwave popcorn kernels, and half a cup of dog food. I had to leave town within 24 hours. I tried to drive out of the neighborhood, backing up extremely slowly around power lines, and I made it about four blocks until fallen trees blocked the road on both sides. I started to cry a little as the reality began to sink in: I had no connections. I had no supplies. I had no escape. I was virtually alone.

I realized I needed to ask for help. I live in a community of people who have been there for a long time; I just had to ask the right questions to get what I needed to get through the day. I lingered around the corner, reaching for the weak and failing service bar, trying to find any familiar faces. I didn’t get much connection, cell or human. Looking back, everyone was shocked. After about an hour, cell service was completely gone for everyone. A woman offered me a sandwich, and the combination of calories and kindness made me feel safe to figure out my next steps.
