In the years since, Shark named, presumably, for his pointy teeth has become an integral member of the Eilish-O'Connell clan, spending his days snacking on Eilish's leftovers, accompanying her to the hairdresser, and playing in the yard with Peaches, the female pitbull that belongs to Eilish's brother Finneas O'Connell and his partner Claudia Sulewski. "He's a little bit of a slob, and he has this goofy little mouth with buck teeth," Eilish says of what made her fall for Shark in the early months of the pandemic. "I just liked his color and I liked his personality. He definitely has human eyes, and I could picture my life with him."

“I reached out to a rescue organization called Angel City Pit Bulls, the same place my brother got his dog,” Eilish explained. “They had a new litter of 10 rescue puppies, and I reached out to
them and said I was going home for two weeks because of this coronavirus thing before I went back on tour, and that I could foster some puppies.” A few days later, two Pit Bull puppies named Jem and Miss Maudie arrived at Eilish’s family’s doorstep. Oh, and it probably goes without saying, but her tour break lasted a little longer than two weeks. “I fostered them all summer, and then of course COVID started, and in the meantime, I fell in love with puppies,” Eilish explained. “There was this little gray dog named Jem, and I just thought he was really special and silly and I knew I wanted him to be mine so I adopted him and named him Shark.” (Miss Maudie also found a new home with a family friend.)

And if you don't recognize Shark's handsome profile on Eilish's Instagram, you might be familiar with his bark: as a frequent visitor to Eilish and O'Connell's studio, they'd be remiss not to let Shark contribute to their songwriting process from time to time. That's why you'll hear him groan and sigh if you listen closely to "The Greatest" from Eilish's latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, or, more strikingly, Shark growls while playing with Peaches as an odd spot in the production of "I Didn't Change My Number," from Eilish's sophomore album Happier Than Ever. "I'm pretty sure it was just one day during COVID where Finneas and I were hanging out and the dogs were running around the playground and I recorded them because they sounded crazy," Eilish
explains. "They're really chirpy and I thought this sounded really cool. I knew I wanted to use it for something, so we turned it into the intro to that song."
