After doing some more research, we learned that the laws surrounding surrogacy vary greatly from country to country. The United States has regulated surrogacy since 1976, and it’s a relatively well-oiled machine there (although the system still varies from state to state). We chose an agency in California, which is known for its smooth and relatively quick process, and doesn’t have the long waiting lists that exist in the United Kingdom, where I was born, and Canada, where my husband is from.
Having my son in 2021 was complicated, and my parenting was affected. Our eggs and sperm were great, but the oven stopped working. After two years of multiple hysteroscopy, surgeries, and IVF cycles, we were told that our best chance of having another child was to outsource our work. My husband and I are one of three siblings (I’m a twin), so we naively never questioned giving our son a playmate. By the time doctors finally told us it was time to look into alternative delivery options for our second child, we already had a few embryos in the freezer. Surrogacy was the obvious next step for us. The previous two years had been difficult, so the decision was really easy.
Selena Gomez recently shared that she won't be able to carry her own children due to health issues, adding that she "[feels] so lucky to have amazing people willing to work on surrogacy or adoption, both of which are huge possibilities for me." At a time when young mothers making their own cereal while wearing high fashion and having multiple babies dangling from their hips is considered hot content, having someone so young and beautiful speak openly about her infertility feels... dare I say, groundbreaking? As someone who's halfway through her own surrogacy journey, it's refreshing to hear such a celebrity say the "S" word. As I'm weathering a sweltering 100-degree fall in Dubai, where I live with my husband and two-year-old son, I'm expecting my second child in February. The second child is currently being cooked 13,000 km away in Las Vegas.
