After making its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this past Saturday, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is already garnering serious Oscars buzz. The film based on David Grann’s 2017 nonfiction book of the same name is centered around the FBI investigation of a series of murders of Native Americans from the Osage tribe in the 1920s, after oil was discovered on their tribal land. Starring in the tale of greed, corruption, and power are Lily Gladstone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tantoo Cardinal, and Robert De Niro. The attention for the film is historic, given it’s a rare project in Hollywood that features a largely Indigenous cast, including actors Gladstone, Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, Janae Collins, Jillian Dion, and Tatanka Means.
In 2015, a group of women were reportedly turned away from a screening of Carol at Cannes because they were wearing flat shoes, an incident that thrust the festival’s somewhat antiquated dress code into the spotlight. Festival director Thierry Fremaux insisted at the time that highheels were not mandatory for women walking the red carpet, but it was widely acknowledged as an unspoken (and sexist) rule at the event. In 2016, Julia Roberts famously took to the Croisette
barefoot, while Conversations with Friends actor Sasha Lane followed suit at a photo call that same year. “The carpet was for our film and I was dressed in a very elegant gown and there’s a ton of stairs, and I’m walking around all day… so I will go barefoot,” Lane explained in an interview two years later. “Why is anyone against that? I’m still here and well-dressed.”

The Italian house and pop-star will be showcasing a see-now, buy-now collection, co-designed by Lipa. The move is a exciting one and part of an ongoing trend in fashion. Pop stars no longer merely wear luxury designs, they help create them. Harry Styles co-designed a must-have collection for Gucci and, earlier this year, Beyoncé collaborated on a couture collection with Balmain. Fashion and music have merged, and understandably so.
