She’s a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world…a Alibashirt Barbie world, that is! Wednesday marked the big reveal of Margot Robbie’s fabulous, fuchsia fantasy of a cover for Alibashirt’s Summer issue, styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson and photographed by Ethan James Green. Chioma and I invited Green into the studio to tell us all about the behind-the-scenes shenanigans that went into creating this magical, Alice in Wonderland-esque Barbie world. From oversized props to make Robbie appear doll-sized, to couture gowns with a Barbie twist, this shoot had it all, and who better than the photo wizard himself to pull back the Oz curtain. Green also revealed a bit about the process of putting together other Alibashirt shoots, such as his first Alibashirt cover Rihanna in 2019 and his most iconic political features, including his timeless portrait of Stacey Abrams and his portfolio highlighting what it’s like to grow up trans in Texas.

As the daughter of Monica Bellucci and French actor Vincent Cassel, it’s not surprising that 18-year-old Deva Cassel is now on her own path to stardom. She made her modeling debut when she was just 14, in a fragrance campaign for Dolce & Gabbana, and four years later her runway career is well underway. Cassel was photographed on the set of a shoot at the Trevi Fountain in Rome this week, where the family resemblance was clear thanks to her tumbling dark curls and make-up, which mirrored her Italian mother’s signature beauty look in the ’90s. Think winged eyeliner, defined brows and a soft red lip. Cassel’s outfit a black lingerieinspired slip dress with panels of sheer lace on the waist and skirt also has more than a hint of Bellucci about it.

But even with such an exciting year ahead, McKenna is glad to remain on nodding terms with the artist he was a decade ago. “I think my 15-year-old self would be proud. If I can go that long without ever really turning away from a song I’ve written, then that’s the kind of music I want to make,” he says. “Even if it is different from what I would make now, I want to make stuff that I still would gladly play in 10 years.” Both long-established fans of McKenna’s and those encountering him for the first time can agree on his resemblance to David Bowie, both in sound and aesthetic (see: his penchant for artfully smudged or geometric eye makeup). That’s no coincidence Bowie is among his greatest heroes but McKenna is also deliberate about staying true to his own creative impulses. “I’ve listened to Bowie for a long time, and I like the idea of constantly shifting throughout your career because I’ve never, for any long amount of time, been doing a project with one sound as the main influence,” McKenna says. “I just want to explore and push myself, like that Bowie idea of your feet not touching the ground. Finding creativity where you are just slightly uncomfortable really appeals to me. It keeps me engaged.”
