Just as we can do things to protect our skin and hair from the ravages of time, we can also take steps to protect our cognitive function. In some cases, we can even reduce our risk of diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's. "We know that a constellation of brain regions degenerate earlier in the aging process," confirms Dr Gwenaelle Douaud, who led the Oxford research team that looked at brain scans of 40,000 people over the age of 45 and networked the brain to identify the areas that deteriorated most quickly. "In this new study, we've shown that these specific parts of the brain are more vulnerable," says Douaud.

Below, we look at some of the modifiable factors that contribute to brain aging along with suggestions for slowing cognitive decline. With these strategies in mind, hopefully we’ll all be
able to remember the names of our favorite actors and loved ones for years to come. In cities with heavy traffic, escaping pollution is nearly impossible. So how can we minimize its impact on our health? Investing in a home air purifier and detoxifying houseplants are both great options, especially for rooms where you spend a lot of time. Also, try to take breaks in less polluted urban areas, like parks and gardens, as often as possible. And if possible, try to escape the city on weekends for some real fresh air in nature.

But if you think there’s nothing you can do about it, think again. The rate at which brain cells age isn’t just down to genetics. A variety of lifestyle factors can influence how your brain preserves its gray matter and the good news is that many of them are modifiable. That’s news from the University of Oxford, where a recent study found that there are at least 15 modifiable lifestyle factors that contribute to accelerated brain degeneration. Among them: diabetes, pollution, alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being overweight, smoking, and mood.
