“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27 September,” Smith’s sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, wrote in a statement. “A deeply private person, she was surrounded by friends and family at the end. She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren, who are all deeply saddened by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.” The recipient of two Oscars, five BAFTAs and four Primetime Emmys, among a long list of other awards, Smith is perhaps best known for her role as the romantic, arrogant schoolteacher Jean Brodie, who leads a class of 12-year-olds astray with her fascist tendencies, in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969); Helena Bonham Carter's disapproving cousin and guardian on her fateful trip to Florence in James Ivory and Ismail Merchant's 1985 film adaptation of A Room with a View; Harry Potter's uptight Professor Minerva McGonagall; and Downton Abbey's Dowager Countess Grantham, whose witty one-liners made both sides of the Atlantic laugh.

Despite her success, Smith insists that she never planned her career, preferring to work on instinct. “To be honest, it just happened,” she once said. “She can capture more in a moment than many actors can capture in an entire film,” explains Nicholas Hytner, who directed Smith in Alan Bennett’s The Lady in the Van. “She can be vulnerable, fierce, bleak and funny all at the same time, and she brings to the set every day the energy and curiosity of a young actress.”

Writing a 1992 biography of Smith, critic Michael Coveney stressed that understanding Smith's childhood was fundamental to understanding her work, which was known for, as he wrote, "a repressed, stifled, slightly malevolent satire." Born in Ilford, England, Smith grew up in Oxford, where she disagreed with her Presbyterian parents and twin brothers. Her mother did not think she had much chance of becoming an actress with "a face like that," and believed her daughter should take a secretarial course until she won an Oscar for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Her father, Nat, a laboratory technician, was more supportive, diligently archiving Smith's clippings. But he seemed haunted by a repressed sense of the stage. After retiring, he offered his medical research to the Bodleian library. When it was rejected, he lit a bonfire and burned it in the garden.
