“I was really nervous at first because I’d never really worked that way before,” Ronan says. “I’m very aware that when filmmakers come in and decide they want their actors to improvise most of a script, it can be quite messy. But it was the most creatively liberating experience of my life.” Still, Lowden never doubted his former co-star. (He and Ronan met while filming Mary Queen of Scots in 2018.) “She’s not an overly dramatic actress,” he tells Vogue. “She’s an actress who’s built for projects that demand a lot from everyone involved, and The Outrun demanded a lot from her.”
“I’ve never thought about producing anything until this point, but I’ve wanted to do more than just act for quite a while,” Ronan says. “I don’t even necessarily see myself as a producer right now, but just someone who wants to be involved in the early stages of a project so I can help shape creatively what it becomes.” The team brought in German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt to direct the film and co-write the script with Liptrot. It was important to all parties that they change the main character’s name from the start, both to give Liptrot a healthy distance from the story and to give Ronan the creative freedom to make it his own. Fingscheidt wrote the script with a
loose structure and little dialogue, instead giving brief descriptions of what each scene needed to do.
“It was all about honoring the messiness of this woman’s life, but also laying the groundwork for empathy,” says Ronan. “Having seen people I love affected by this particular disease, it was personally important to give this woman’s story the space to be seen in its most authentic light.”
It wasn’t an easy film to make or even get made in the first place. After reaching out to producer Sarah Brocklehurst, who secured the rights to Liptrot’s memoir, they decided to make the film together. Lowden and Ronan signed on to co-produce and develop the project for two and a half years.
