After Charles's death, Yasmin's relationship with Eric, who is struggling with a midlife crisis after his divorce, becomes a proxy for her father issues. (During lunch, Eric tells her, "Desire is practical, pragmatic it takes what it can get," to which Yasmin responds with a seething, pleading, "Why did you do this? Why did you do this to me?") Henry also takes on Charles's traits, both marked by his capriciousness and neediness not to mention his sexual deviance. (When Yasmin learns of his penchant for urine, she indulges it.) In her scenes with Harington, however, Abela frequently uses the shifty eyes and overbearing tone that Yasmin used with the longing Robert in season one. After all, Yasmin's relationship with Henry is a long-term business deal: When, in the season three finale, he asks where she's been, she replies matter-of-factly, "I got lost on campus. And I had sex with Robert."
And about the sex scene with Robert: Abela throws her inhibitions out the window for her scene with Lawtey, making the sex so urgent and cathartic that it bleeds into desperation. It’s also a strategic move, of course it’s Yasmin’s way of saying goodbye but with her hair plastered to her sweaty face and the veins throbbing in her forehead, it all seems utterly realistic. Yasmin may be a victim of her father’s misdeeds, but Abela refuses to make her a martyr, reminding us again and again that Yasmin is hardly humble about her situation. (In one episode, she even dresses up as Princess Diana.) She’s as calculating as ever; the sight of Robert playing scratchoffs while she blackmails Hanani Publishing sends her flying straight into Henry’s arms.
It would be impossible to discuss Abela’s performance this season and the show’s entire run without talking about sexuality, which, for Yasmin, is inextricable from power. Yasmin is a mermaid, using sex as a tool to dominate, soothe, and advance but she also suffers abuse from men because of her sexuality. Season three reveals her horrific relationship with her father, who pins her down during fights and maintains an erection while they argue.
