Smith spent most of her final months living in the Bahamas but moved to Hollywood, Florida, with Stern in February 2007. The couple stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, where she was a regular guest. A few days after their trip, Smith was discovered by her personal nurse Tasma Brighthaupt, who happened to be the wife of her bodyguard, that Smith was unresponsive and pale. Smith and Stern's bodyguards were later notified, and she was taken to nearby Memorial Area Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Smith's final days were spent in the haze, still grieving the loss of his son Daniel. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight conducted just 10 days before her death, Smith mourned Daniel - revealing that she often saw him in her dreams and felt that he was calling she stays with her.
In September 2006, Smith gave birth to daughter Dannielynn and just three days later, her 20year-old son, Daniel, died suddenly while visiting Smith in his hospital room. The search warrant affidavits from the investigation into Smith's death say that Smith's former nannies told investigators they witnessed Stern and Eroshevich crush and heat certain drugs to "disappear". them into a liquid and inject it to Smith." One of those nannies, Quethlie Alexie later testified that the drug had left Smith "unable to walk" and "unable to talk to her."
By the time Smith arrived in Florida, it was clear that she was struggling. One witness said Smith "seemed a bit dizzy" when he checked into the hotel. Over the next few days, a hotel employee assigned to Smith's personal assistant was informed that Smith had the flu - but when the hotel sent a local doctor to help treat her, they refused because Worried about Smith's privacy .
