A few years ago, a girl approached Shields at a Starbucks. Could they show her a photo? Shields agreed, thinking maybe someone had dressed up as her for Halloween, or that they used to have the same eyebrows. (She gets a lot of pictures of eyebrows.) Instead, they showed her a car with a sign on the windshield: For Sale. Formerly Owned by Brooke Shields. At first, she laughed it off like any used-car sales pitch. But as she walked to get her coffee, she found herself turning around. Could she look again?
That doesn't mean the "mom" role is over. Not at all it's now reached a stage where everyone involved is an adult. "It's learning a whole new language and having a whole new set of rules," she says. Lately, Shields, Grier, and Rowan have found common ground. Both girls went through her closet before coming to Wake Forest. They didn't want designer items (though Shields still can't find her Hermès slippers), but rather her vintage T-shirts: They took a Harley Davidson kid's T-shirt and another with a Keith Haring sketch. Grier made national news when she borrowed Shields's wedding dress from her marriage to Andre Agassi to wear to her graduation.
And then, as Shields learned, it was whatever the hell she wanted. A few weeks after crying on the porch, Shields posted another video of herself in jean shorts, excitedly announcing that she was home alone. Then she and her dog Tuzi cuddled on the couch while watching TV. In addition to her uninterrupted TV time, Shields indulged in the following: Going to bed at 10 p.m. and waking up when she wanted; visiting friends’ houses and staying as long as she wanted; going on date nights multiple times with her husband; working long hours on her own projects! “There’s something about your time being your own again,” she says. “I don’t have to check in to see what their schedules are, so I can schedule my day around them. When you have kids, your whole life is tied to these people who have these schedules, and you have to dictate what those schedules are.” There are play dates and homework and manners and all this stuff.”
