Personally, I don't think either actor would have any trouble portraying the aristocracy: Robbie seems ergonomically designed to wear a corset on a hilltop, and the novel's female rage vein might make her a delight to play. On the other hand, while Brisbane-born Elordi wouldn't be the first white actor to play the ethnically ambiguous "dark-skinned nomad" Heathcliff, Fennell's disregard for the brutal racism at the core of this non-white character, who famously cried as a child: "I wish I had light hair and white skin, and dressed well, and behaved well, and had a chance to be rich like him!" We're now so aware of how deeply ingrained race is in our worldview, how insidious its origins, that we know it's not something that can - or should - just be swept under the rug. So I'm very interested to see how Fennell's capable hands will grapple with a prominent racial storyline, led by a white guy.
